Texas mom gets 99 years for gluing toddler to wall, beating her

[Updated at 4:22 p.m. ET] A Texas mother who super-glued her 2-year-old daughter's hands to a wall and beat her over potty training problems was sentenced Friday morning to 99 years in prison, a Dallas County felony records department district clerk said.

Elizabeth Escalona, 23, will be eligible to ask for parole in 30 years. She pleaded guilty in July to a charge of first-degree injury to a child, a crime punishable by anywhere between probation and life in prison.

"This mom was pure evil, and her children are better off without her," prosecutor Eren Price said after a judge delivered Friday's sentence. "Her five kids now have a chance to lead a productive life."

Escalona’s attorney said that the sentence was excessive and that an appeal would be filed, CNN affiliate KTVT reported.

Escalona's daughter Jocelyn Cedillo was less than two months shy of her 3rd birthday in September 2011 when Escalona used a powerful adhesive to glue her hands to a wall and beat her because of potty training troubles, authorities said. Three other children belonging to Escalona, who was pregnant at the time, witnessed the abuse, according to Dallas County district attorney's office spokeswoman Debbie Denmon.

The child urinated on herself during the ordeal, during which she was hit in head and kicked in the groin, among other forms of abuse, Denmon said.

Oefelia Escalona, the defendant's mother, testified during her daughter's sentencing hearing this week that she found the girl and took her to a hospital. Once Jocelyn was there, medical authorities noticed severe bruises to her face and head, as well as a severe brain injury that led to her temporarily being in a coma.

At this week's sentencing hearing, prosecutors showed pictures of Jocelyn's hands and bruised body and forehead.

"The entire picture was very shocking," said Dr. Amy Barton, then a child abuse pediatrician at Children's Medical Center of Dallas, choking back tears on the stand on Monday. "I see a lot of children, and this was one of the most shocking cases that I have seen."

Escalona asked for leniency during her sentencing hearing this week, saying she behaved like a monster but deserved a second chance, KTVT reported. Her mother asked the judge to sentence Elizabeth to probation, according to KTVT.

Price initially offered a plea bargain of 45 years in prison, but Escalona turned it down, the district attorney's office said.

Price said that the judge, after learning more about Escalona during the hearing, was justified in sentencing her to more time.

"Elizabeth Escalona wasn't sorry for what she did to 2-year-old Jocelyn. Elizabeth Escalona felt sorry for herself," Price said. "Those tears on the stand were for her and not for the toddler she tortured."

An attempt to reach Escalona's attorney for comment Friday was not immediately successful.

Before this incident, Escalona had been investigated by Texas Child Protective Services but never arrested or charged, Denmon said.

The child welfare agency put all of her children in foster care after Jocelyn was taken to the hospital. All five of them, including Jocelyn, are now in the custody of their grandmother, Oefelia Escalona.

GOOD! Prison will prevent her from having any more children the taxpayers have to support. She KICKED this baby it the head after gluing her hands to the wall. She should never get out of jail. Let her re-hab there. Her kids will never have to endure her abuse ever again. Nobody needs a monster mother like that.

I'm glad she will rot in prison and will have to deal with that backlash.

Child abuse is wrong. Period. Something like that could cause trauma for the rest of the child's life, and no on should ever put their child in a coma. Or bruise and batter them. She is going to jail because of what she did, and she didn't even feel bad for her own offspring. She felt bad for herself.

When I compare Mr. Sandusky's sentence to that of Ms Escalona's, I find myself at a loss to understand...

Another welfare queen with five kids at the age of 23 no doubt from five different fathers – my tax dollars at work. And her mother gets awarded custody of the kids. The same mother who rasied is POS now has the grandkids. The same mother who wanted probation for the monster daughter, so that tells you what her value system is. There kids are screwed. And later when they all grow up and start repeating the cycle, I will be paying for that too. I would guess that Elizabeth's mother was a wlefare queen too with no man in the picture.

Dee, this is not about you and your tax dollars at work. I have no doubt you waste plenty of your money on who knows what. There are more serious issues here. Get off it, unless you're a Repub, in which case there's no chance of that.

Right on the mark Dee. When 10% of us pay 70% of Fed Income tax, and almost half pay nothing, this is what you get. No responsibility whatsoever. How can she have five kids at that age? Why is this just accepted as normal in her 'community'? Who is going to support these kids now, their criminal fathers? She is somehow able to live off society and just be ignorant, and vicious. Race is not issue, there are plenty of ignorant white people just like her.

Well then you and your tax dollars should be upset, Dee. It costs more money to keep a person in prison than to do in-home and behavioral interventions. The woman definitely deserves prison time, but that's at a higher cost to tax payers.

Seems extremely rough justice considering the insignificant 'punishment' given to the US soldier behind the Haditha massacre in Iraq, which killed 24 Iraqis, including women, children and a man in a wheelchair.

This sentence is outrageous. There are serial killers who don't get sentences that long. The judge should have put the mother in therapy with a lesser prison sentence, say 10 years, with the constructive hope that she might learn and raise her child in a better way. Judge must have emotional issues of his or her own...typical American screwed-up justice.

You are ridiculous if you think this sentence is outrageous. Child abusers and molesters can not be fixed, even with therapy. This lady is a monster and has no business raising or having children. The judge was completely right in what she did. Except I would of liked the children to go to foster care instead of with her mother. I do not think that is a good environment for the children.

bayard, "typical screwed up American justice"
I guess your liberal thinking would tend to lean toward codling this abuser and give her a light sentence. I am sure her children are thankful for your worrying about the mother, and not keeping her away from them.

    • Bayard WHAT?

I agree it is rediculous....that she may get out in 30 years. Bayard... 10 years, maybe some counceling... Are you serious? I have a 2 year old daughter and if anyone did that to my kid, Jail would not be their concern.

Wow...while I don't doubt for a second that what she did was horrific and deplorable, 99 years? Eligibility for parole in 30? There are serial rapists who get lighter punishments than that!

This is just plain sick! But this woman should have received the same punishment that she gave to the child. Only, in her case there would have been a legitimate reason!

the name of this article should be changed because the mother did more than just glue the childs hands to the wall-she beat her, kicked her repeatedly and then glued her hands to a wall.

After the first child why didn't she stop having kids! I can't believe that the children are back in the same family with their grandmother, these children need a new start far away from any trace of the abuse they have endured.
