[Update 8:55 p.m. ET] The U.S. Geological Survey revised its report of Tuesday's earthquake to magnitude 4.0, down from a preliminary magnitude of 4.6. The epicenter was pinpointed 4 miles west-southwest of Hollis Center, Maine, at a shallow depth of 4.2 miles.
Despite the downgrade, the quake was felt as far away as Boston, Massachusetts; Albany, New York, and even Waterbury, Connecticut, according to the USGS.
You can report your earthquake experience to the USGS at the above link, as well as adding your comment to the many at the end of this post.
"My entire house shook for 3 to 4 seconds. It felt like it was about to collapse," a viewer from Everett, Massachusetts, wrote to CNN affiliate WCVB in Boston.
[Original post] An earthquake of preliminary magnitude 4.6 hit Maine at 7:12 p.m. ET Tuesday, according to the USGS website. The earthquake happened 3 miles (5 kilometers) west of Hollis Center, Maine.
Felt in East Ryegate, Vermont!
I am sure this somehow has to do with Zumba
Gas line going into your house?.... Out here there is an oil tank on the basement or a pile of logs to burn. There is no natural gas lines around here.
Source: I live here.
Waltham Mass HELL YEAH!
dude you drinking tonight or what?
me thinks me spilled me beer while changing the tv channel to get info on the "earthquake"
Is that in a fracking zone.
No fracking in Maine that I am aware of. I am about ten miles from the epicenter. Knocked a couple things off shelves.
That was a loud sound like a truck and felt the back of the couch move a few times.
Thought it was my Xbox controller vibrating as I made a kill playing call of duty. Then I realized I wasn't using the Xbox. Gotta stop smoking weed soon.
Living through earthquakes in Central Ca and Los Angeles. This is no big deal. Just wait!
End of times....
don't bet on it.
Omg
My brother and I felt the shaking down here in Rhode Island. First time I ever actually felt one where it wasn't a truck going down our street. I have heard that because of all the bedrock in New England you can feel these at a further distance away from the epicenter than in other parts of the country. This was also a very shallow one according to the USGS . Lucky for us these temblors are very rare and minor around here, thank you very much.
I'm in Providence and I definitely felt it as well.
Sorry, don't feel any.
In California, earthquakes are one of the four seasons along with wind, fire, and flood.
