[Update 8:55 p.m. ET] The U.S. Geological Survey revised its report of Tuesday's earthquake to magnitude 4.0, down from a preliminary magnitude of 4.6. The epicenter was pinpointed 4 miles west-southwest of Hollis Center, Maine, at a shallow depth of 4.2 miles.
Despite the downgrade, the quake was felt as far away as Boston, Massachusetts; Albany, New York, and even Waterbury, Connecticut, according to the USGS.
You can report your earthquake experience to the USGS at the above link, as well as adding your comment to the many at the end of this post.
"My entire house shook for 3 to 4 seconds. It felt like it was about to collapse," a viewer from Everett, Massachusetts, wrote to CNN affiliate WCVB in Boston.
[Original post] An earthquake of preliminary magnitude 4.6Â hit Maine at 7:12 p.m. ET Tuesday, according to the USGS website. The earthquake happened 3 miles (5 kilometers) west of Hollis Center, Maine.
Yeah so everything was the norm just gone done with dinner.... my youngest just about to get in the tub when the poor little thing comes running out and holding me until the house stops shaking..I'm telling you those few seconds were surreal.... but like i've seen in many post i can now offiically cross it off my bucket list.. I have lived through an earthquake.
Let's hope not !
If earthquakes were retribution for or reminders of the sins of men, then the surface of the earth would be nothing but sandy soup !
Pretty funny. Me and my friends are all eating at a pizza place right north of Boston in Revere, right underneath the Blue Line (subway that runs above the restaurant.) Well needless to say the whole building shook (not violently but noticeably) for about 6 seconds. Everybody stopped eating and looked around and my friend says. "Wow, was that an earthquake?" And I replied "Nah it was probably just the Blue Line. Better chance of me getting a job than getting an earthquake around here." (Unemployed for two months unfortunately). Ten seconds after I say that three people run in and say "Hey guys did you feel the tremors?!" I looked around, sighed and said "Well, I better be getting a god damn job."
Went to Alaska to see the northern lights and experience an earthquake. Experienced both.....in Mass, but the scenery in Ak was awesome!
felt rumbling here in Danbury, CT for a few seconds
The quake woke me from a dead sleep. Thought it was a truck going by. Cannot wait to have another one. Shows Gods power. It was awesome!!!!
Earthquakes were a perfectly natural event on Earth for billions of years before the human race came along and invented the concept of religion and the particular god(s) you choose to worship.
It's a sign from the Good Lord telling you to vote for Obama! (but, after the debate, who would doubt this?)!!!!!!!!
Yeah! Right?
Me... 112%
The devils greatest trick was making people like you think his voice was gods, A vote for Obama is a vote for the devil.
Hey elf! Hyperbole much?
A vote for the devil, huh? Time for your meds.
i knew someone would have to say something about Obama lets blame him for the earthquake. We blame him for everything else. Lets blame him for the stuff bush did. People need to grow up, and stop acting like little kids.
Loud rumble shook the house, dog barked. Sounded like low jet, Not as much motion as when I was working outside San Fran when earth shook during world series. comments about shaking being felt as far as Conn, including Boston are DUH.
Hey Tom, lived there 20 years , glad to be home
Home grown Mainer here didn't know that. Thanks for the info , will search that out.
it's just another earthquake, likely caused by hydraulic fracturing (FRACKING) dumping their poisonous waste water into some remote site. that would be my guess. but then, who am i to say? hey, remember guy arkansas' quakes and all those dead birds and fish? the colorado quakes and vacated school? the recent dallas airport quakes and also ohio's? did those leroy high school girls get well? were there really 5 fracking sites close to their athletic field? hmmmm, i wonder if minor quakes would cause a home gas line to leak? wonder if that could lead to a spontaneous explosion? oh, there's probably no connection. i am just thinking to myself. guess we better just get used to the minor inconvenience of an earthquake now and then, for the sake of getting good jobs and making money shipping our natural gas off to china. they give us money for our gas and we can use the money to repair our infrastructure that has been damaged by earthquakes. that makes sense. someday maybe we can even have a friendly trade with china. we can trade our natural gas for safe drinking water.
Strange that you say that. Most ridicule someone for an opinion such as this, but I live in a 'fracking' area and I find that tremors in our area have increase 20 times since they started drilling! Its safe though, REALLY! Come on over and have a drink of water if you dont believe the hype 🙂
God is punishing Romney for lying to the American people. Watch out Michigan is next!
Isn't Maine a part of Canada?
No they are a breed of there own up there, strange goings on I say...
Hubby and I both jumped up from the love seat and ran downstairs. We thought perhaps the furnace had misfired... Nope. Just an earthquake! Cool experience. Glad everyone/everything is OK!
