Report: Libyan militias executed dozens, possibly including Gadhafi

Libyan strongman Moammar Gadhafi may not have been killed in crossfire during his capture, but instead executed along with 66 others, including one of his sons, according to a new report.

Human Rights Watch says new evidence it collected about what happened one year ago "implicates Misrata-based militias in the apparent execution of dozens of detainees" after Gadhafi's death.

In an extensive report, "Death of a Dictator: Bloody Vengeance in Sirte," the human rights group says Libyan authorities have failed to follow through on a vow to investigate the death of Gadhafi, his son Mutassim, and dozens of others in rebel custody.

"Among the most powerful new evidence is a mobile phone video clip filmed by opposition militia members that shows a large group of captured convoy members in detention, being cursed at and abused. Human Rights Watch used hospital morgue photos to establish that at least 17 of the detainees visible in the phone video were later executed at the Mahari Hotel," the group says.

A Human Rights Watch research team visited the site of the final battle between Gadhafi's convoy and opposition forces, and interviewed officers in opposition militias as well as surviving members of the convoy.

"Our findings call into question the assertion by Libyan authorities that Moammar Gaddafi was killed in crossfire, and not after his capture," said Peter Bouckaert, emergencies director for Human Rights Watch.

CNN's timeline of Gadhafi's final moments notes that as rebel forces were putting him into a vehicle, a firefight erupted and, caught in the crossfire, Gadhafi was shot in the head.  He died moments before arriving at a hospital, according to then-interim Prime Minister Mahmoud Jibril.

Human Rights Watch says video footage showed Gadhafi was "captured alive but bleeding heavily from a head wound, believed to have been caused by shrapnel from a grenade thrown by his own guards that exploded in their midst, killing his defense minister, Abu Bakr Younis."  In the footage, Gadhafi is "severely beaten by opposition forces and stabbed with a bayonet in his buttocks, causing more injuries and bleeding. By the time he is filmed being loaded into an ambulance half-naked, he appears lifeless."

he was summarily executed and sent to his master who cares. this was a wicked man no different than idi amin, hitler, assad (father and son), mussolini, and the list goes on. i have no sympathy for him nor those i have mentioned because they made their choice in life and defied God Almighty for their own evil wants and desires. they are where they need to be period.

This would not mean much. In the end it will be surpressed by the West. Only bad behaviours by regimes they don't like will see light of day. Tourture and killings by "freedom fighters" don't count.
This is not a surpise at all. It's human to surpress the crimes of your friends while emphasizing those of your enemies. Case in point: CURRENT nuclear programs in Israel will never be mentioned but a POTENTIAL program in Iraq would be reported as "destabilizing" the middle east. Yeah, because all the nuclear bombs stockpiled in other countries don't kill, only Iranian bombs will. So let's throw hissy fits about a POTENTIAL bomb. Hypocrits.

Israel has not expressed a burning desire to use a nuclear weapon. Iran has.

      1) noticed that you didn't mentioned about the thousands killed by Gahdafi who was only thinking of himself, Gadhafi commited genocide in vain to continue robbing the country's revenues of billions by staying in power.

Iran's president publicly announced taking Israel off the map of the world and now Iran wants a nuclear bomb, I say "hell no" this fool mentioned of destorying a country wipping it off the map and with the other hand, aiming to get his hands on a nuclear weapon.

In fighting ca 6 wars with an enemy that wants to kill all Jews, Israel have never used nor threatened any attacker with nuclear bombs. Iran is talking about it all the time and after Israel the western world, USA, needs to go. So take your taqiyya and shove it. Any muslim country with WMD is a disaster, they will use it on their own citizens as well.

Have you lost your mind.. do you not read anything.. ?? The Iranians have sworn to "wipe Israel off the face of Earth" ?? Has Israel threatened anybody ?? How can you say a country that has sworn to wipe out another nation as openly as Iran has, should have nuclear weapons ? You need some help or a massive beating.. I think the latter of the two.. People like you who are uneducated and ignorant should not post such nonsense.. its beyond sad people like you exist...

There isn't a soul outside of the Middle East that believes that a moderate and democratic Israel has a burning desire to eliminate an entire country off of the face of the map. On the other hand, the religious extremists in most of the other Middle Eastern countries can't be trusted with high tech weapons or even a pair of scissors. Homicide seems to be in their DNA.

Nope, Iran's Supreme Leader has been on tape saying that detonating a nuclear weapon is an "unforgivable sin." Hardly the talk of a guy planning on using one. Now, I would be the last person wanting to see Iran obtaining nukes, this doesn't mean however you can embezzle facts and make groundless accusations. Sure, the Iranian government would love to wipe Israel from the face of the earth. Will they ever try to do it? I highly doubt it. They know launching an attack (both conventional and nuclear) would have unimaginable consequences for their own country.

The Iranians have no qualms about attacking an embassy and holding its foreign citizens hostage for 444 days. Who knows what else they will do in the name of Allah.

It was a peaceful democratic demonstration before Quadaffi fired on the demonstrators and turned it into a revolution. He cooked his own goose and suffered the inevitable consequences.

If we take Iraq and Afghanistan as examples, the Syrians will kill us for protecting them. Our presence on their soil will make them go off of the deep end of insanity.

Seriously, why should we care? Is the United States the conscience for the world, combined with the global policing power to enforce that conscience? Heaven help us if that's the case. If any American was injured or killed that's one thing. No impact on our citizenry, why are we bothering, why is anyone other than the Libyans bothering?

When dictators torture their people it is only normal to expect retribution when they are caught. If the Europeans had their way they would put him in a nice clean prison awaiting trial and treat him with all kinds of goodies [probably even conjugal visits from his many wives]. HE would die from old age before he would be tried. And then if he lived lone enough, he would be kept in prison because there is no capital punishment in europe. They are complete idiots and have no clue on how to treat bad guys.

What's going on here. Obama said that Muslims are not terrorists. He said that Muslims are peaceful and that the most beautiful sound in the world is the Muslim call to prayer at sunset. This story must be a mistake. Wouldn't the rebels just arrest him, put him in a cell with cable TV and prepare for a trial?

Gadhafi got EXACTLY what he deserved!!! If any man had done to Americans what that coward did to his own people over a period of 4 decades, I'm confident that you & everyone you know would be stepping over each other for the opportunity to take part in torturing that man to death....

When will the Obama administration admit the FAILURE of the Obama MidEast/Muslim World foreign policy? Why only ONE member of congress,Rep Kuchinich challenged the Obama(nato) Libyan War conducted by President Obama without congressional vote? When will the USA learn the truth about how four US citizens were executed in the post Obama War Benghazi,Libya?

Be proud that you were born in the US. Enjoy the freedom you have being an American. If you were born in other country and insult the president in such manner, the security force would have wiped out your dirty ass and hanged you alive.

I will bet they spent millions writing this obvious report, and then you are wondering why more government is bad.
4 years later after 2008 market crash , this kind of nonsense is still going on, is a good example why 80 trillion dollar debt will not be paid.and the system ultimately will brake before anybody understand that things have to change fundamentally not superficially

It was apparent months ago that this was an execution. The initial vidoes showed him being beaten and humiliated. He ends up with a bullet in his head a few seconds later and it's somehow unrelated? Come on. These are the people we helped obtain power and it should be clear that they are not champions of democracy or due process.

Sarkozy ordered the death of Khadafi. A French Secret Serviceman shot him dead, BEFORE interrogation could happen. Sarkozy didn't want those secrets shared.

I'm glad Capt. Obvious put this article out to cast doubt on the story that Gadhafi was killed in a "crossfire". He had a chance to go into exile, he refused and the end was predictable.
