Trayvon Martin’s family ramps up effort to keep school records private

The family of Trayvon Martin on Friday bolstered their efforts to keep the slain 17-year-old’s school records private, just as attorneys for his killer, George Zimmerman, were in court to request subpoenas for the material.

“I feel Trayvon's school records are not relevant in this case,” said his father, Tracy Martin, whose attorney called for Zimmerman’s medical records to be released.

Judge Debra Nelson is expected to determine whether school officials should hand over documents that could include Martin’s grades, attendance and any disciplinary actions against him.

An unarmed Martin was gunned down on February 26 by Zimmerman, who was a volunteer neighborhood watchman patrolling a gated community in Sanford, Florida. He told police that he shot Martin in self-defense.

The shooting prompted national outrage as well as a Justice Department investigation.

I think George is in the right. I believe the kids school records will show he was a troubled kid. No doubt a hoodlem in the making.

I wonder why? Is it the same reason they don't want anyone to know about his alleged criminal past / gang tattoos / drug usage.

This covering of public records, is in my mind, is in part, Obstruction of Justice. Both individuals already have exhibited thier not "model citizens", anyways. And now, after a year, both the prosecution and the defense want to cloud thier clients pasts? So what damming evidence could result from making thier records part of the discovery phase of the trial? The people want it "all" laid on the table.

Trayvon was walking home from the store at night and in the rain minding his own business. Zimmerman sees Trayvon walking while he's driving and begans to slowly follow and stalk Trayvon while in his truck for no reason what so ever. Trayvon noticed he was being slowly followed and stalked by some freak and gets a little scared and takes off running threw the apartment complex. Zimmerman gets out of his truck and chases after Trayvon with a loaded 9mm all for NO reason what so ever and Trayvon had did nothing wrong. Somewhere Zimmerman catches up to Trayvon and A fight ensues and Trayvon " Stands His Ground" and defends himself from this freak that's chasing after him at night and in the rain for NO reason what so ever. Zimmerman was losing the fight that he started and put himself in playing cop so he pulls out his 9mm and murders Trayvon. Hope you Zimmerman supporters can grasp the TRUTH. Either way Zimmerman is a murderer and is going tp prision for most of the rest of his life.

Without witnesses or video, your narrative means nothing in a criminal trial. Self defense is very difficult to refute. You need to convince a jury of the state of mind of the shooter, and I can't imagine how you can do that in this case. Bernard Goetz was found not guilty on everything but the gun charges, which he never disputed. In that case, you had a subway car full of witnesses.

The TRUTH, eh? This is exactly why we have a judicial system in this country, to keep ignorant souls such as yourself from jumping to conclusions, picking the side of the story that you agree with, presenting that opinion as absolute fact, and then executing punishment on the person you feel is guilty. The real TRUTH is that unless you were there, you do not have all the facts, none of us do. This is why these school records, along with all the dirt on Zim, should absolutely be part of the trial. The judge/jury should have access to MORE facts, not fewer.

Thank you David, took the words out of my mouth! I also agree w/Jeff Frank & banasy! All "dirty laundry" from both camps should be available, but it doesn't change the fact that Zimmerman opened fire on an unarmed teen & that he didn't follow advice from the 911 operator! If he had just done that, this tragedy could have been prevented!!

Don't worry. When Obama is reelected he will make sure the bad man is put away forever. Obama will protect us African Americans from the evil Mexicans.

Thought this case was the State of Florida v. George Zimmerman. The victim's parents may say a lot, but it's up to the prosecution to argue for or against the subpoena of school records. It's Zimmerman's defense team that, naturally , wants any records that may defame the victim.

Regardless, there is no winner in this situation. There are still many facts that haven't come to light. Yes, Trayvon seemed like a trouble maker, was in a gang, or at the very least, affiliated with one as seen from his gang tattoos. He also had drugs in his system at the time of his death, which only further shows he was troubled. On top of him being expelled from school..... where there is smoke, there is likely fire. I don't think he deserved to die for this however, but with this being said, I don't think Mr. Zimmerman should have been arrested for murder either. Manslaughter I can understand, perhaps. Will be interesting to see all of the facts. I just hope if he is found innocent that the community doesn't start rioting! That's when your true colors show........ and I am sure they are ready to support their fallen gang member.

It's just a legal strategy to raise as much reasonable doubt as possible. It gives the jury one more thing to think about.

He'll get off, barring some previously unseen video footage.
