Four dead in Wisconsin salon shooting, including gunman

[Updated 6:10 p.m.] Suspected shooter Radcliffe Haughton has been found dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, Brookfield police Chief Daniel Tushaus said. He was found inside the salon where the shooting occurred.

[Updated 5:38 p.m.] Froedtert Hospital - the Milwaukee medical facility where four shooting victims are being treated - has "resumed normal operations" after earlier being placed in lockdown mode, the hospital said on its website.

"We are certain that our environment is safe," the hospital said in an update published at 4:25 p.m. CT.

[Updated 5:20 p.m.] President Barack Obama learned of the shooting around 12:30 p.m. CT from homeland security adviser John Brennan and then had a follow-up call an hour later involving, among others, FBI Director Bob Mueller, a White House statement said.

"The president was informed that the shooting did not appear to be terrorism-related," the statement said.

Earlier, Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker offered '"our thoughts and prayers to the victims" and "the law enforcement and community support they need to heal in the coming days."

[Updated 4:56 p.m.] Authorities working to clear the building where Sunday's bloody shooting took place "believe we have identified what is being described as an improvised explosive device," Brookfield police Chief Daniel Tushaus said.

The device is "hampering our clearing of that building," the chief added.

[Updated 4:41 p.m.] Authorities "believe" three of the seven people shot Sunday have died, according to Tushaus.

The shooting took place around 11 a.m. CT (noon ET), the chief explained.

Authorities have been able to track down a 2003 Mazda Protege linked to the suspect - which was found outside the city of Brookfield - but the suspect remains at large. He's been identified as Radcliffe Haughton, who Tushaus said weighs 270 pounds and stands just over 6 feet tall.

[Updated 4:10 p.m.] Bomb squad personnel are at the scene of the shooting, Brookfield police Lt. John Beth said, pointing to concerns there may be explosives at the site.

[Updated 3:42 p.m.] ATF spokesman Thomas Ahern identifies the suspected shooter as Radcliffe Haughton, 45, of Brown Deer, Wisconsin. The shooting is being investigated as a possible domestic-related incident, according to Ahern. The suspect remains at large.

[Updated 3:29 p.m.]ATF spokesman Thomas Ahern confirms to CNN that seven people were shot by a lone gunman at the Azana Hair Salon and Spa. "Employees said a man entered the salon, workers saw a firearm - a handgun of some sort," Ahern told CNN's Susan Candiotti. "An employee said to the gunman something like, 'If you're gonna rob the place, rob the place,' and then (the gunman) opened fire."

[Updated 2:24 p.m.] FBI and ATF agents are among the authorities at the scene, CNN affiliate WISN reports.

[Updated 2:07 p.m.] The nearby mall and some other buildings are on lockdown, CNN affiliates report.

[Updated 1:56 p.m.] CNN affiliate WTMJ reports authorities are looking for a suspect.

[Updated 1:54 p.m.] CNN affiliate WISN reports that a witness described seeing two women leaving the spa, apparently injured.  One crawled out and was taken by emergency responders.  The other was treated by emergency personnel in a squad car.

[Updated 1:32 p.m.] Hospital spokeswoman Nalissa Wienke tells CNN all four people in the emergency room appear to have non-critical injuries.  She could not say whether the injuries were due to gunshots.  At this time, the hospital does not believe it will need more staff, she said.

[Updated 1:28 p.m.] Numerous emergency vehicles are at a spa in Brookfield, Wisconsin, as local news agencies report a shooting took place.

Four people are in an emergency room, and another three are on their way, said Beth Strohbusch of Froedtert Hospital in nearby Milwaukee.

CNN affiliate WTMJ says the Waukesha Sheriff's Department confirmed there was a shooting, and that witnesses say it was either at or near the Azana Salon and Spa, which is across the road from Brookfield Square Mall.

CNN affiliate WISN called it a "mass shooting."

all pro guns without understanding the necessesary law of restrictions, because something must be done because of the non stop killings, just like yesterday, one whole family including small children were killed by their neighbor because of unlawful owning of gun...so my ideas you fools pro guns, go buy a lot of superpower guns, teach your kidshow to use it, or be drunk, or.load it fully, and boom you will die...

Thank you for answering your own question 'unlawful owning of a gun' thus they are criminals to begin with . And should not posses one .

  3. the country is a mess under obama...more divided and angry

In 2008, obama ran on healing, bringing together, unfiying...

in 2012, he has divided american along every conceivable demograhic.

    rich v poor
    women v men
    young v old
    muslims v "intolerance"
    black v white
    legals v illegals
black harvard professor v white("racist") boston cop
trayvon("looks like he could be my son") v white justice
obamacare v throw grandma off the cliff
bogus alternative energy v rich bad oil companies
    ground zero mosque v "intolerance"
I killed bin laden v "republicans love war"

in short, obama has DELIBERATELY chosen to divide americans along every line imaginable....he has chosen to make people agnry at one another....

you tell me, how is that "presidential"? How is that a unifier? a bridge builder? The TRUTH is, he has completely LIED about what he said he was going to be when he duped everyone in 2008.

Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me.

      Are you kidding me?

Just listen to the past 4 years of Rush / Hannity / Beck if you want to hear hatred and division.

The GOP has poured out nothing but divisiveness and hatred ever since a black man got elected president.

spot on statement. he also wants to issue driver's licenses at taxpayers expense to illegals... Who on earth would of thunk something like this let alone release it to the public as a plan of action? Not even the liberal-mecca known as Europe would do something this costly and idiotic.

I guess Americans have truly become brainwashed...

The consumption of alcohol makes people tipsy, not the alcohol itself. If I have a bottle of unopened vodka in my bar I am not tipsy unless I open it and drink.

Crazies will always find a way to get guns. Until law abiding Americans start carrying guns and shooting back in thier own defense the crazies will continue to have the upper hand. I carry a gun every time I leave the house just in case I want to get a burger, see a movie or have my nails done.

I hate to see injury and loss of life lke this but I'll keep my guns to protect my family. When the bad guy comes to your house to harm you and yours. I'll stay put and protect my familly. You can protect your familly with a law saying No Guns. Criminals will always be criminals. Take guns away from law biding citizens and give criminals a free pass house to house. Thats makes so no sense. You only fool yourself thinking banning guns makes a safer place to live.

When will people learn that prohibition does not work. Never has and never will. Prohibit gun sales and the criminals will be the only ones that have them. Another interesting fact is that in most metro areas it takes 10+ minutes for the cops to show up at your house. Now tell me how you expect to defend yourself for 10min while you wait for the cops to arrive. A gun at least gives you a chance to protect your family.

If only everyone in that mall was armed! The founding fathers were right we have a right to carry guns. Iif all the people in the mall were armed this would not have happen ed. Assault rifles over every shoulder would have ensured that the perp would have been mowed down. Likely 30 or 40 others would have been killed in the cross fire but no ones right to carry arms would have been eradicated by crazy gun control laws. This gun nonsense and our nonsense gun laws make us the laughing stock of the world!

I agree...more guns with higher calibers and bigger clips would have made this situation turn out much different. Also, less government...much less...hardly any government...except a few laws to protect the unborn and to keep us safe from foreigners, gays and women.

Why is it that the moment some criminal or nut case shoots someone, there are all these sick, sick, nasty people gleefully dancing in the blood of the victims. Do they offer sympathy or concern? No. Only mindless ranting about guns and trying to offer simplistic, unworkable solutions that involve new laws. Since it is already illegal for nut jobs and criminals to have guns, what are more laws going to accomplish? According to Einstein, doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results is evidence of insanity. Cities with the tightest gun restrictions have always been the most dangerous.

and those cities you mention have ONE demographic (which i won't name as I'll be labeled something even though the statistics show it to be true) that commits nearly 80% of the total crimes, with over 50% of those crimes involving illegally possessed firearms.

You can't do much with people like that when they are raised in, flaunt and idolize that particular lifestyle. You see it in TV, Movies, Music and even in athletics (football and basketball primarily)...

I don't agree that all guns should go. However, the assault weapon ban needs to be enforced and continued, and there should be a ban on high capacity magazines. I also think it should be more difficult to get a gun than it is to get a driver's license. It isn't – not in any state. But, no... not all guns should be banned. We have the right to bear arms – but we don't have the right to get them without proper checks, and there is no need for weaponry that is designed to do nothing but kill crowds.

Banning guns doesn't work because criminals (you know the ones doing 99% of the shooting) do not obey the law...get it? Chicago has the toughest gun laws in the nation AND the most gun crimes

LOL! No one has to squeeze off 100 rounds while hunting. One shot and done. Not all "assualt rifles' have 100 round mags. Me I prefer 30 rounders. The Ar-15 is a reliable and pretty accurate for a 16inch barrel and is a great gun to use at the range.

So should we ban all motor vehicles, prescription drugs, alcohol, tobacco products, kitchen knives, baseball bats, etc etc? These all kill people on a regular basis but I bet you aren't willing to give up your car, cease taking the prescription drugs you should probably be on, and end those drinks after work or on the weekends.
