Four dead in Wisconsin salon shooting, including gunman

[Updated 6:10 p.m.] Suspected shooter Radcliffe Haughton has been found dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, Brookfield police Chief Daniel Tushaus said. He was found inside the salon where the shooting occurred.

[Updated 5:38 p.m.] Froedtert Hospital - the Milwaukee medical facility where four shooting victims are being treated - has "resumed normal operations" after earlier being placed in lockdown mode, the hospital said on its website.

"We are certain that our environment is safe," the hospital said in an update published at 4:25 p.m. CT.

[Updated 5:20 p.m.] President Barack Obama learned of the shooting around 12:30 p.m. CT from homeland security adviser John Brennan and then had a follow-up call an hour later involving, among others, FBI Director Bob Mueller, a White House statement said.

"The president was informed that the shooting did not appear to be terrorism-related," the statement said.

Earlier, Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker offered '"our thoughts and prayers to the victims" and "the law enforcement and community support they need to heal in the coming days."

[Updated 4:56 p.m.] Authorities working to clear the building where Sunday's bloody shooting took place "believe we have identified what is being described as an improvised explosive device," Brookfield police Chief Daniel Tushaus said.

The device is "hampering our clearing of that building," the chief added.

[Updated 4:41 p.m.] Authorities "believe" three of the seven people shot Sunday have died, according to Tushaus.

The shooting took place around 11 a.m. CT (noon ET), the chief explained.

Authorities have been able to track down a 2003 Mazda Protege linked to the suspect - which was found outside the city of Brookfield - but the suspect remains at large. He's been identified as Radcliffe Haughton, who Tushaus said weighs 270 pounds and stands just over 6 feet tall.

[Updated 4:10 p.m.] Bomb squad personnel are at the scene of the shooting, Brookfield police Lt. John Beth said, pointing to concerns there may be explosives at the site.

[Updated 3:42 p.m.] ATF spokesman Thomas Ahern identifies the suspected shooter as Radcliffe Haughton, 45, of Brown Deer, Wisconsin. The shooting is being investigated as a possible domestic-related incident, according to Ahern. The suspect remains at large.

[Updated 3:29 p.m.]ATF spokesman Thomas Ahern confirms to CNN that seven people were shot by a lone gunman at the Azana Hair Salon and Spa. "Employees said a man entered the salon, workers saw a firearm - a handgun of some sort," Ahern told CNN's Susan Candiotti. "An employee said to the gunman something like, 'If you're gonna rob the place, rob the place,' and then (the gunman) opened fire."

[Updated 2:24 p.m.] FBI and ATF agents are among the authorities at the scene, CNN affiliate WISN reports.

[Updated 2:07 p.m.] The nearby mall and some other buildings are on lockdown, CNN affiliates report.

[Updated 1:56 p.m.] CNN affiliate WTMJ reports authorities are looking for a suspect.

[Updated 1:54 p.m.] CNN affiliate WISN reports that a witness described seeing two women leaving the spa, apparently injured.  One crawled out and was taken by emergency responders.  The other was treated by emergency personnel in a squad car.

[Updated 1:32 p.m.] Hospital spokeswoman Nalissa Wienke tells CNN all four people in the emergency room appear to have non-critical injuries.  She could not say whether the injuries were due to gunshots.  At this time, the hospital does not believe it will need more staff, she said.

[Updated 1:28 p.m.] Numerous emergency vehicles are at a spa in Brookfield, Wisconsin, as local news agencies report a shooting took place.

Four people are in an emergency room, and another three are on their way, said Beth Strohbusch of Froedtert Hospital in nearby Milwaukee.

CNN affiliate WTMJ says the Waukesha Sheriff's Department confirmed there was a shooting, and that witnesses say it was either at or near the Azana Salon and Spa, which is across the road from Brookfield Square Mall.

CNN affiliate WISN called it a "mass shooting."

      There are 500,000 legaklly owned in the US. And tell me, how many of the legally registered machine guns were used in crime last year? I don't think you realize how hard it is to get an ATF license for a fully auto weapon.

    Do you think this guy considered going to jail for life before doing this? It already is pretty much life in jail for this sort of thing – the punishment does not seem to deter. Death penalty does not deter. You are going to have to think a little bit more to come to a solution. I'll give you a few hints, though. First, quality early life education and banning corporal punishment would reduce this sort of thing. Second, because people will go nuts despite our best efforts we can never eliminate this sort of thing short of banning hand guns – which has been shown to work in dozens of countries around the world.

    We just had 4 women killed in an Orlando hair salon...domestic violence...restraining order was filed previous week. The only thing that will protect yourself from DV is a gun. Buy one, get a concealed carry and practice. Restraining orders are just feel-good worthless pieces of liberal paper justice!

      You are right. People seem to have a false sense of security in this country. While the police will protect you, they aren't waiting around the corner. It takes minutes for them to arrive.

      In the event of a real mess the police may not even be around to help. Look at NOLA just after Katrina. It was chaos.

      Very true .. having the court system tell someone to stay away from someone else is a waste of energy since there are laws in place that already tell people not to do bad things. Someone hell bent on harming someone will harm someone regardless of law or restraining orders.

      You are right Vinny. Buying a gun won't help you if you are afraid to use it. If you pull it out you better be able to pull the trigger. You have to train how to use it safely and practice regularly.

      I have a concealed carry permit but have yet take the gun anywhere but the range because I have not mastered it yet.

      I wonder if this could be classified as an "honor killing"...a domineering male out to slay the woman who dissed him. Not to be insensitive to the victims, but it seems like if an Arab or Muslim kills his wife or daughter then it's "those evil Muslims", but if a white male murders his estranged wife or family then it's people show up to argue about gun control.

      – What guarantee do you have that a Law abiding citizen under a lot of mental pressure wont snap and either shoot himself or decides to go out in a blaze of glory? If your logic is to be followed then it also means that every man, women and child should be armed and then we can all live in fear as to which one of the law abiding citizen is a ticking t i m e b o ooomb. This is a very dangerous logic if implemented. I cant understand no matter how I look at it why the NRA is so against any kind of regulation or control. They basically oppose even an assault weapons ban. Looking back you can easily tell which is the weapon of choice of mass murderers. Use your commonsense folks!

I can show you a few more where some idiot is dead because he tried to break into someones home. I can show more where a gun owner and/.or police are being sued by the dead guys family. Why does a criminal that walks into my house that attempts to steal my stuff, frightens/hurt/kill my family and winds up shot then become the victim? You liberals drive me crazy with your anti this and that rhetoric. You've given the criminals more rights than their victims and are happy about it.Anyone that breaks into a home should fear that a 12ga full of 00 buck, a high powered assault rifle, or a high caliber pistol is waiting on the other side yet most of you want to eliminate that fear because a few insane people go off the deep end.

      People armed with guns are as dangerous as the shooter or in most cases are unable to act. Case in point when the nut job in AZ tried to kill the Congress woman, there were over 7 people in the audience with concealed weapon permits
      and not one drew their pistol as they were busy with the rest of the unarmed citizens either hugging the ground or running for their life. The shooter was tackled by a brave personn. Even trained military has shown that about one out of ten riflemen are effective in a firefight. During the Vietnam war, the estimates were that it took 50,000 rods for each causualty inflicted on the enemy. These stats are pretty close even today in the gulf and Afghanistan war. Arming
      Citizens with guns were only result in more friendly fire casualties in addition to what the shooter does.

GUNS DON'T KILL PEOPLE, PEOPLE KILL PEOPLE, Guns are just a tool like any other tool, ban guns and criminals will use knifes and clubs, criminals are the ones who have not evolved as fast as the rest of society, taking our guns so we cannot protect ourselves from these animals will not solve the problem. If thier were no guns, criminals would run rampent, because they know that thier is nothing to fear in the dark house, and they have knifes and clubs, try, just try for once to see what would happen if the public didn't have guns for protection!!!

      Atomic Bombs don't kill people...people kill people. Doesn't mean that I want people walking around with nuclear devices in the backpack. Guns, like atomic bombs, may not kill people on their own, but they sure as hell make it easy to get rid of a lot of people in a hurry.

      Bad argument. Nobody goes on a killing spree without a gun. I doubt anyone other than a Navy SEAL or someone with such specialized training could kill seven at a mall, or kill more than one or two people at a movie theater. Clearly guns don't make people crazy, but they sure do make it easier for the crazies to do more damage. This is something you simply can not deny.
