Four dead in Wisconsin salon shooting, including gunman

[Updated 6:10 p.m.] Suspected shooter Radcliffe Haughton has been found dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, Brookfield police Chief Daniel Tushaus said. He was found inside the salon where the shooting occurred.

[Updated 5:38 p.m.] Froedtert Hospital - the Milwaukee medical facility where four shooting victims are being treated - has "resumed normal operations" after earlier being placed in lockdown mode, the hospital said on its website.

"We are certain that our environment is safe," the hospital said in an update published at 4:25 p.m. CT.

[Updated 5:20 p.m.] President Barack Obama learned of the shooting around 12:30 p.m. CT from homeland security adviser John Brennan and then had a follow-up call an hour later involving, among others, FBI Director Bob Mueller, a White House statement said.

"The president was informed that the shooting did not appear to be terrorism-related," the statement said.

Earlier, Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker offered '"our thoughts and prayers to the victims" and "the law enforcement and community support they need to heal in the coming days."

[Updated 4:56 p.m.] Authorities working to clear the building where Sunday's bloody shooting took place "believe we have identified what is being described as an improvised explosive device," Brookfield police Chief Daniel Tushaus said.

The device is "hampering our clearing of that building," the chief added.

[Updated 4:41 p.m.] Authorities "believe" three of the seven people shot Sunday have died, according to Tushaus.

The shooting took place around 11 a.m. CT (noon ET), the chief explained.

Authorities have been able to track down a 2003 Mazda Protege linked to the suspect - which was found outside the city of Brookfield - but the suspect remains at large. He's been identified as Radcliffe Haughton, who Tushaus said weighs 270 pounds and stands just over 6 feet tall.

[Updated 4:10 p.m.] Bomb squad personnel are at the scene of the shooting, Brookfield police Lt. John Beth said, pointing to concerns there may be explosives at the site.

[Updated 3:42 p.m.] ATF spokesman Thomas Ahern identifies the suspected shooter as Radcliffe Haughton, 45, of Brown Deer, Wisconsin. The shooting is being investigated as a possible domestic-related incident, according to Ahern. The suspect remains at large.

[Updated 3:29 p.m.]ATF spokesman Thomas Ahern confirms to CNN that seven people were shot by a lone gunman at the Azana Hair Salon and Spa. "Employees said a man entered the salon, workers saw a firearm - a handgun of some sort," Ahern told CNN's Susan Candiotti. "An employee said to the gunman something like, 'If you're gonna rob the place, rob the place,' and then (the gunman) opened fire."

[Updated 2:24 p.m.] FBI and ATF agents are among the authorities at the scene, CNN affiliate WISN reports.

[Updated 2:07 p.m.] The nearby mall and some other buildings are on lockdown, CNN affiliates report.

[Updated 1:56 p.m.] CNN affiliate WTMJ reports authorities are looking for a suspect.

[Updated 1:54 p.m.] CNN affiliate WISN reports that a witness described seeing two women leaving the spa, apparently injured.  One crawled out and was taken by emergency responders.  The other was treated by emergency personnel in a squad car.

[Updated 1:32 p.m.] Hospital spokeswoman Nalissa Wienke tells CNN all four people in the emergency room appear to have non-critical injuries.  She could not say whether the injuries were due to gunshots.  At this time, the hospital does not believe it will need more staff, she said.

[Updated 1:28 p.m.] Numerous emergency vehicles are at a spa in Brookfield, Wisconsin, as local news agencies report a shooting took place.

Four people are in an emergency room, and another three are on their way, said Beth Strohbusch of Froedtert Hospital in nearby Milwaukee.

CNN affiliate WTMJ says the Waukesha Sheriff's Department confirmed there was a shooting, and that witnesses say it was either at or near the Azana Salon and Spa, which is across the road from Brookfield Square Mall.

CNN affiliate WISN called it a "mass shooting."

    1) People get mentally ill or sick everywhere and anytime. You cannot stop that. But very easy availability of guns make it easier for these unfortunate things to happen. Rest of the world, the same mentally ill person may punch at you, or throw some stone, worst case stab a person. Only in America, they shoot at so many people.
    2) America needs gun control. The sarcastic comments about the criminals who won't return the guns is really thoughtless. First of all, a lot more people died in america because random shooting from a fellow civilion who went crazy for personal reasons that criminals. Criminals most of the time, they go against their gangs and stuff. Let police handle them.

A gun is an instrument used by people and is designed to deliver a bullet to a designated target. So if you don't want to believe that it is people that kill people at least get it right and realize that it is the bullets that kill people not the guns. When was the last time that you heard of an unattended gun beating somebody to death on its own?

tanks are just a armored shell that shoot projectiles at a designated target. Legalize Abhrams for hunting imo.

How about we just deport morons like yourself off to some deserted island so you can all have a grand shootout with each other?

For those who wish the second amendment to be repealed, and forcefully take away all guns from everyone – the terrorists would have free reign unprohibited confidence to shoot everyone, reload, and continue shooting until everyone is gone knowing that no one would shoot back.

Wake up, they are doing that anyways. All I see is mass shootings in the U.S. Noone stopping anyone with a gun except the police. So stop the old school 1700's BS about right to bear arms. More guns isnt the answer. Look at countries that have a ban on guns they have less gun crimes, obviously.

Someone without a gun cannot stop a nutcase. I would rather trust a qualified, practiced, committed individual who wants to protect their and your freedoms in our society. This is why we have a second amendment. I understand that you and others may be pascifists. That's OK. We'll fight for your rights too.

No you dont fight for my rights. I dont even live in your country. The facts are that the U.S is plagued by gun crimes. When you wake up youll understand that to. Why arent all these gun owners stopping these mass shootings? Im sick and tired of hearing this ancient talk of right to bear arms. IT helps very few while ruining an entire nation. No need for opinion anymore just look at the stats.

Quit portraying these people as criminals. They are just retaliating to the true violence, hate, and cruelty that is killing this entire planet. Quit making happiness a requirement to earn a living when the ability to earn a living is what drives happiness, then calling it being "mentally ill".

If a person meets the requirements for a job on paper, they should be hired regardless of their social skills.

    • really?

Yeah because I'm going to hire a 600lb women to be my dietician because she has the qualifications on paper...wake up, most jobs require social interactions...

For that specific example, it wouldn't make sense that an obese person would meet the qualifications for a dietician.

However, if she does have the certification for that field of study, then she most likely would be able to provide you with the knowledge you are seeking regardless of her personal dieting.

Just so we are clear, because there seems to be some persistent misunderstanding: the National Rifle Association is to the Second Amendment what the American Civil Liberties Union is to the First Amendment. Neither of these civil rights groups "gives" or "makes" civil rights policy. It is the Bill of Rights that acknowledges the existence of God given rights. The Second Amendment does recognize the right of the people to keep and bear arms. it does NOT recognize any right to use them for violent purposes. The NRA does not advocate the use of arms for violent purposes. So statements like, "Hooray for America where the NRA gives us the right to murder children at the mall/ school / movie theater, etc" are vicous, and iredeemable vapid.
