Four dead in Wisconsin salon shooting, including gunman

[Updated 6:10 p.m.] Suspected shooter Radcliffe Haughton has been found dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, Brookfield police Chief Daniel Tushaus said. He was found inside the salon where the shooting occurred.

[Updated 5:38 p.m.] Froedtert Hospital - the Milwaukee medical facility where four shooting victims are being treated - has "resumed normal operations" after earlier being placed in lockdown mode, the hospital said on its website.

"We are certain that our environment is safe," the hospital said in an update published at 4:25 p.m. CT.

[Updated 5:20 p.m.] President Barack Obama learned of the shooting around 12:30 p.m. CT from homeland security adviser John Brennan and then had a follow-up call an hour later involving, among others, FBI Director Bob Mueller, a White House statement said.

"The president was informed that the shooting did not appear to be terrorism-related," the statement said.

Earlier, Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker offered '"our thoughts and prayers to the victims" and "the law enforcement and community support they need to heal in the coming days."

[Updated 4:56 p.m.] Authorities working to clear the building where Sunday's bloody shooting took place "believe we have identified what is being described as an improvised explosive device," Brookfield police Chief Daniel Tushaus said.

The device is "hampering our clearing of that building," the chief added.

[Updated 4:41 p.m.] Authorities "believe" three of the seven people shot Sunday have died, according to Tushaus.

The shooting took place around 11 a.m. CT (noon ET), the chief explained.

Authorities have been able to track down a 2003 Mazda Protege linked to the suspect - which was found outside the city of Brookfield - but the suspect remains at large. He's been identified as Radcliffe Haughton, who Tushaus said weighs 270 pounds and stands just over 6 feet tall.

[Updated 4:10 p.m.] Bomb squad personnel are at the scene of the shooting, Brookfield police Lt. John Beth said, pointing to concerns there may be explosives at the site.

[Updated 3:42 p.m.] ATF spokesman Thomas Ahern identifies the suspected shooter as Radcliffe Haughton, 45, of Brown Deer, Wisconsin. The shooting is being investigated as a possible domestic-related incident, according to Ahern. The suspect remains at large.

[Updated 3:29 p.m.]ATF spokesman Thomas Ahern confirms to CNN that seven people were shot by a lone gunman at the Azana Hair Salon and Spa. "Employees said a man entered the salon, workers saw a firearm - a handgun of some sort," Ahern told CNN's Susan Candiotti. "An employee said to the gunman something like, 'If you're gonna rob the place, rob the place,' and then (the gunman) opened fire."

[Updated 2:24 p.m.] FBI and ATF agents are among the authorities at the scene, CNN affiliate WISN reports.

[Updated 2:07 p.m.] The nearby mall and some other buildings are on lockdown, CNN affiliates report.

[Updated 1:56 p.m.] CNN affiliate WTMJ reports authorities are looking for a suspect.

[Updated 1:54 p.m.] CNN affiliate WISN reports that a witness described seeing two women leaving the spa, apparently injured.  One crawled out and was taken by emergency responders.  The other was treated by emergency personnel in a squad car.

[Updated 1:32 p.m.] Hospital spokeswoman Nalissa Wienke tells CNN all four people in the emergency room appear to have non-critical injuries.  She could not say whether the injuries were due to gunshots.  At this time, the hospital does not believe it will need more staff, she said.

[Updated 1:28 p.m.] Numerous emergency vehicles are at a spa in Brookfield, Wisconsin, as local news agencies report a shooting took place.

Four people are in an emergency room, and another three are on their way, said Beth Strohbusch of Froedtert Hospital in nearby Milwaukee.

CNN affiliate WTMJ says the Waukesha Sheriff's Department confirmed there was a shooting, and that witnesses say it was either at or near the Azana Salon and Spa, which is across the road from Brookfield Square Mall.

CNN affiliate WISN called it a "mass shooting."

In Europe, you are warned to wear a money belt.
In America, you are warned to wear a bullet-proof vest.

    God bless America.

America is a JOKE its the only place where its "right" to bear arms and then people are shocked when things like this happen. It so disgusting that tragedies like this can happen so easily.

As I'm sure you have heard before, countries like Switzerland have an almost 100% gun ownership rate, and many of those are the dreaded "assault weapons". So, what's the difference between America and Switzerland, which has a minuscule gun violence rate? This culture of violence in America plays a big role, as do many other socioeconomic factors. Gun violence is only a symptom of a deeper problem.

Houghton was under previous court order to surrender all firearms to police, so he was not legally in possession of this weapon. Also he brought an explosive device with him to the spa...

So much for the gun control argument.

I don't judge black by the behavior of this alleged man and I don't want people judging the white race based on the guy in the Aurora Colo theater shooting. Every news event now seems like an opportunity for people to brandish their axes to grind- racism, gun control, etc... These are individual news events caused by individuals, not a referendum!

Its hard to not when you talk about the statistical numbers involved. What is it? 100 to 1? How many of these stories have we seen since the white guy in Colorado? Hmm, just yesterday a black man murdered an entire family in California.

100 to 1? Would you care to post where I can verify this crime statistic? Not even the most virulent racist I know (or have read) says blacks are 99% more likely to kill than whites.

Unfortunately, you do not have to be a racist to be an observer.

I'm not saying you are racist. I am questioning your "statistic" of 100 to 1. Is this your "observation" or a statistic?

Its not a statistic, it is an observation thrown out in space. Which is why I use the words "what is it"?. I can tell you this, in Stockton, CA. there have now been 52 murders committed this year. I challenge you to research each and every one of those murders and ask yourself where I get my 'observations'.

This is becoming almost a monthly occurance, these mass shootings. I really do not know what the answer is, but there must be some solution. Gun and anti-gun people need to come together and work on this, without placing blame on either side and without radical positions on each side. If we don't find a solution, we'll be no better off than some run of the mill 3rd world nation.

I'm not sure there is a solution. It may be that as a society we have passed the point of no return-I know I just posted these are individual acts by individual people, but I'm not ignorant of the number and frequency of the individual events. While I believe individuals can change and turn things around and that no individual should be judged by their race, I'm not sure Anerican society as a whole can do so, especially given the red state/blue state divide, racism, dissolution of values (family and values in general), and promulgation of anti-values in music and nearly every other aspect of media.

Monthly? These shootings happen daily. News of shootings is repressed. NRA media takes the word "shooting" out of headlines–slaying, murder, anything but "shooting". Just had to dig deep to find out the five murdered in Denver bar last week were shot dead.
After a mass shooting, NRA media always comes up with "a home invasion stopped by homeowner with gun" or similar malarky

If a race doesnt want to be judged by their race alone, that race should take into consideration that actions of the overwhelming majority of those within the race.
