Relative shoots costumed girl after mistaking her for a skunk
A little girl was fighting for her life early Monday after she was shot outside a Halloween party by a relative who mistook her costume for a skunk.
Police in western Pennsylvania's New Sewickley Township said the 9-year-old girl was dressed in black with a black hat for the Saturday evening party.
As the two to three dozen guests milled about, the girl went to hide on the edge of a hill.
It was past 8 p.m. and the sun had long set. A relative spotted the dark figure in the distance, mistook it for a skunk and fired his shotgun, said Officer Greg Carney with the township police.
The girl was hit in the neck, back and arm - and flown to Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh, about 30 miles away. There, she remained in the intensive care unit, Carney said.
Police will determine later Monday whether they will charge the shooter, whom they did not name. Nor did they say how he was related to the girl.
They did add, however, that the man had not been drinking.

Charges absolutely SHOULD be filed, at the very least for reckless endangerment. There is no good reason for anyone to be firing a weapon at a party where children are present unless someone's life is in danger. Mistake or not, this should never have happened.

How BIG are the skunks in New Sewickley Township???? The average weight of a 9-year-old girl is 63 lbs! Most skunks weight less than 18lbs! That's quite a difference!!!
A proposed remedy for situations like this. For one day, say Halloween, we require everyone to wear a costume and carry a gun. Anyone not wearing a costume is shot on site.
Does PA have the "stand your ground" law? Maybe the shooter is afraid of skunks.

Ok I thought about it for a minute, and yes I think most rednecks vote because they want to be able to keep their gun, so that they can dress their children up as animals and then hunt them.

First why shoot a skunk that is far in the disance. You have to be an IDIOT!!!! Haloween Party with Kids and you are toting a shotgun. Maybe the young girl was in favor of voter ID at the polls and the shooter is on welfare and food stamps and knows that a Romney win makes him look for a job.

@Anti-guns Because skunks tend to carry rabies? Granted they are also good for pest control so I guess it is up to you weather the risk is worth it or not.
