Relative shoots costumed girl after mistaking her for a skunk

A little girl was fighting for her life early Monday after she was shot outside a Halloween party by a relative who mistook her costume for a skunk.

Police in western Pennsylvania's New Sewickley Township said the 9-year-old girl was dressed in black with a black hat for the Saturday evening party.

As the two to three dozen guests milled about, the girl went to hide on the edge of a hill.

It was past 8 p.m. and the sun had long set. A relative spotted the dark figure in the distance, mistook it for a skunk and fired his shotgun, said Officer Greg Carney with the township police.

The girl was hit in the neck, back and arm - and flown to Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh, about 30 miles away. There, she remained in the intensive care unit, Carney said.

Police will determine later Monday whether they will charge the shooter, whom they did not name. Nor did they say how he was related to the girl.

They did add, however, that the man had not been drinking.

Think about that one long and hard. With a statement like that you shouldn't be allowed to vote either. We could probably say the same thing about a lot of the "non" rednecks.

I can't believe some of the liberal comments here. Calling someone a redneck is no different than using a racial slur to describe a black person.

Yay for the 2nd Amendment and those who don't understand what the founding fathers meant when they wrote it. It was not for every knucklehead in the country to have a gun, and it certainly was not to fight tyranny. Wow, what an idiot!

Charges absolutely SHOULD be filed, at the very least for reckless endangerment. There is no good reason for anyone to be firing a weapon at a party where children are present unless someone's life is in danger. Mistake or not, this should never have happened.

Mrs Hickey – I'm sure if the liberal media was interested in posting stories of the ridiculously stupid things that Canadian citizens do from time to time you wouldn't be the pot calling the kettle black.

Clearly this fellow was an idiot. But, to our wonderful neighbors up North. It is so nice of you all to lump all us all together...guess when I run into an idiot from your area I will do the same. Wait, it has already happened!

      Just check some numbers.

in 2007 the US has 0.20 fatal gun accidents per 100,000 residents. Canada had .21. Looks like your just as dumb as we are.

How BIG are the skunks in New Sewickley Township???? The average weight of a 9-year-old girl is 63 lbs! Most skunks weight less than 18lbs! That's quite a difference!!!

A proposed remedy for situations like this. For one day, say Halloween, we require everyone to wear a costume and carry a gun. Anyone not wearing a costume is shot on site.

Does PA have the "stand your ground" law? Maybe the shooter is afraid of skunks.

Even if it were a skunk, the first reaction is to shoot it? I know a lot of people that need to be shot first instead of defenseless animals. What a complete redneck idiot.

    Hi Bill,

Ok I thought about it for a minute, and yes I think most rednecks vote because they want to be able to keep their gun, so that they can dress their children up as animals and then hunt them.

Should I maybe think about it for more than a minute...or should learn what sarcasm it?

So if the little girls was execising her 2d amendment rights, and was armed also then she could have shot back at the relative. Redneck country buffonery at it's finest!

First why shoot a skunk that is far in the disance. You have to be an IDIOT!!!! Haloween Party with Kids and you are toting a shotgun. Maybe the young girl was in favor of voter ID at the polls and the shooter is on welfare and food stamps and knows that a Romney win makes him look for a job.

Yeah... that's the likely reason. A gun owner stupid enough to shoot a girl at a Halloween ISN'T a Romney supporter. Got another tall tale to tell us?

Todd that qualifies for one of the most ignorant comments I have ever read. It was also a tremendous reach to connect to COMPLETELY UNRELATED topics. We don't need Voter ID we need Voter IQ tests.

First, you are correct, the guy is an idiot. Second – more than likely the girl was probably NOT in favor of voter ID and the relative is a teabagger and wanted the opposition out of the way.

@Anti-guns Because skunks tend to carry rabies? Granted they are also good for pest control so I guess it is up to you weather the risk is worth it or not.
