Relative shoots costumed girl after mistaking her for a skunk
A little girl was fighting for her life early Monday after she was shot outside a Halloween party by a relative who mistook her costume for a skunk.
Police in western Pennsylvania's New Sewickley Township said the 9-year-old girl was dressed in black with a black hat for the Saturday evening party.
As the two to three dozen guests milled about, the girl went to hide on the edge of a hill.
It was past 8 p.m. and the sun had long set. A relative spotted the dark figure in the distance, mistook it for a skunk and fired his shotgun, said Officer Greg Carney with the township police.
The girl was hit in the neck, back and arm - and flown to Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh, about 30 miles away. There, she remained in the intensive care unit, Carney said.
Police will determine later Monday whether they will charge the shooter, whom they did not name. Nor did they say how he was related to the girl.
They did add, however, that the man had not been drinking.

Why was he shooting in the first place? Given that he couldn't even tell what species he was aiming at, I'd say it's safe to assume the "skunk" was too far away to be any kind of threat or nuisance. So, really, what was the point?
This little girl's life and pursuit of happiness is threaten by idiot with gun. Imagine if she was your daughter, how would you feel about right to bear arms by idiots?

To those who keep on asking why he was shooting? Because he had a gun, that's why. Duh. Compare statistics from UK of people shot with a gun per capita. A Brit can't get a gun, there are virtually no murders and no shootings.

Actually that's not true. Although the murder rate in the UK is much lower than in the US, they have around 600 murders a year. To say there are virtually no murders is just plain wrong.

My heart goes out to that little girl and her family. To shoot a gun in the vicinity of a crowd is beyond stupid. He should be charged for reckless endangerment, at the very least. He also should be charged with attempted animal cruelty. That skunk was clearly no threat to anyone, so why shoot it? This guy is not only an idiot. He is a trigger happy idiot and a poster child for why certain people should not be allowed to own guns.
