Relative shoots costumed girl after mistaking her for a skunk

A little girl was fighting for her life early Monday after she was shot outside a Halloween party by a relative who mistook her costume for a skunk.

Police in western Pennsylvania's New Sewickley Township said the 9-year-old girl was dressed in black with a black hat for the Saturday evening party.

As the two to three dozen guests milled about, the girl went to hide on the edge of a hill.

It was past 8 p.m. and the sun had long set. A relative spotted the dark figure in the distance, mistook it for a skunk and fired his shotgun, said Officer Greg Carney with the township police.

The girl was hit in the neck, back and arm - and flown to Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh, about 30 miles away. There, she remained in the intensive care unit, Carney said.

Police will determine later Monday whether they will charge the shooter, whom they did not name. Nor did they say how he was related to the girl.

They did add, however, that the man had not been drinking.

Why the hell is the "re-tard" shooting skunks to begin with? Poetic justice, if you ask me.

DEAR GOD??!! If tis were my daughter I guarantee the next thing to be shot would be that idiot – GUARANTEE! Why is there even a question whether or not to charge him – If nothing else it is reckless endangerment, reckless discharge of a firearm and if she doesn't make it – Negligent homicide. I pray to God she makes it, then the parents should get EVERY penny this idiot has and he should be put away for a long time.

There needs to be seriously more stringent gun laws – I don't give a c–p about you NRA dopes citing more people are killed by cars – check your statistics again – you will find they are wrong. The fact is guns are DESIGNED to kill things, whereas cars are DESIGNED to protect the users and those around them. your statistics are seriously flawed and ignorant. Count the amount of hours people spend in cars, now count the amount of hours spent shooting and lets compare deaths per hour of usage. There are a hundred other ways I can quote statistics to prove you wrong. You have to make stuff up and leave a lot out to make your argument.

I got my tuff guy days, today ain't one of 'em. I hope that kid recovers and recovers 100 percent.
I can't stand this world when innocent kids get zapped before they even get out of the starting block.
Give 'em a break, Mr. Universe.

I cannot rationalize a good comment on this stupidity level. First of all shooting a skunk will stink up the whole area for a week, second a shotgun would be useless at a far range and third what are you doing with a loaded shot gun with all these kids around?

Lord, yes, anyone who discharges a friggin shotgun in the midst of a party at anything other than a clearly identified charging bear or ax wielding madman should be charged. What a gene pool reject.

Yes, I totally agree. And can you believe they have to decide if he should be charged? He was not even sure what he was shooting. This was a terrible accident but people need to be held accountable for very bad judgement as well. Good Lord!

The guy is an idiot. He did not identify his target and fired it during a party with kids. He should be charged.

If only there were more citizens there with guns, they could have shot the shooter.

Anyone want to start placing bets on when/where next weeks shooting will be?

everybody thinks they are a good driver, yet there are 35k or so auto deaths each year and millions of accidents and injuries. Every gun owner thinks they are responsible and safe using guns yet things like this, and worse, happen every day. Give a human a gun and sooner or later somebody is going to die.

There should be minimum standards for gun ownership. Maybe an IQ test when you buy a gun?
