Relative shoots costumed girl after mistaking her for a skunk
A little girl was fighting for her life early Monday after she was shot outside a Halloween party by a relative who mistook her costume for a skunk.
Police in western Pennsylvania's New Sewickley Township said the 9-year-old girl was dressed in black with a black hat for the Saturday evening party.
As the two to three dozen guests milled about, the girl went to hide on the edge of a hill.
It was past 8 p.m. and the sun had long set. A relative spotted the dark figure in the distance, mistook it for a skunk and fired his shotgun, said Officer Greg Carney with the township police.
The girl was hit in the neck, back and arm - and flown to Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh, about 30 miles away. There, she remained in the intensive care unit, Carney said.
Police will determine later Monday whether they will charge the shooter, whom they did not name. Nor did they say how he was related to the girl.
They did add, however, that the man had not been drinking.
God humans are stupid, why does he put up idiocy? Could it be that God was made up by people scared of death or people that didn't want to pay their fare share of taxes? People are stupid!

First I am sorry for the little girl and I am sorry the guy made a poor decision. I know if he could take it back he would. It was dark and kids was in the area so maybe hunting with kids possible in the area was not good. Our decision can be life and death in everything we do. So lets make a good choice when that time come.

way to go gun lovers? if he wrecked a car would you say car lover? or a plane, a plane lover. owning a gun is not wrong or bad. stupidity is, and as evident in your posting, stupidity is not limited to gun owners.

I don't understand how someone could shoot a nine year old because he had mistaken her for a skunk. Really? You're going to shoot at a skunk in the dark when there's a party going on? This is probably a cover up.
Why shoot a skunk? They aren't deadly! Doesn't make any sense!!!
This tragedy could have been avoided if the girl was armed.

... you laugh at the death of a child?! What in the hell is wrong with you? People like you are an embarrassment to this country.
They either got some enormous skunks (that wear hats?) in that area or really small 9 year olds. In any case it's inexcusable to shoot when you can't be sure of what you're shooting at, and guesses in the dark don't count. I'd like to know what the thinking was; my guess is something like: "OMG! It's a giant killer skunk that's wearing a hat! I'd better shoot it a'fore he gits away!"
I was thinking the same thing. I'm also wondering what sort of day to day thoughts (or lack of) run through someone's head that they feel it's just fine to bring a gun to a children's party. It's all about the journey, they say. I just can't put myself in that situation and reason out the thought process.

You live in the kind of world where skunks wear hats and are little-girl sized, maybe you should not be allowed around sharp objects, much less guns. Or children.
The guy shouldn't of been handling that thing w/ a kids party going on.Shouldn't of shot after dark,and shouldn't of handled it drunk.If that little girl dosn't pull threw he needs to stick it in his mouth .

There is a perfect solution to this kind of thing. Require that all guns be equipped with a trigger lock in the form of a rubics cube.
One of the most important rules of safe firearms handling that i had drummed into me as a kid was: be SURE of your target, and what is behind/beyond it as well. This guy is an absolute moron at *best* and other words to describe him at worst wouldn't be permitted here.
It was not accidental it was carelessness act, this guy should be put in jail for the rest of his life and no more gun forever
