A UN twist to ‘Gangnam Style’

Showing a side of his personality rarely seen in public, the United Nations Secretary-General tried to match “Gangnam Style” moves with the master of cheesy dancing.

Two of the world’s most recognizable South Koreans stood side-by-side. One wore spectacles, a U.N. lapel and a pressed black suit. The other stood in a black checkered jacket and his signature loose bow tie. And both raised their arms - locked and ready to bounce on imaginary horses in “Gangnam Style” fashion.

On Tuesday, rapper Psy stopped by the United Nations and stood next to Ban Ki-moon, smiling politely, bowing (the traditional Korean way of greeting) and shaking hands while photographers snapped away.

“Now you have the first and second famous Koreans in the same building,” joked Psy, whose real name is Park Jae-Sang.

Then Ban gave what may be the best compliment from a U.N. Secretary General: “You are so cool… I hope you can manage global warming.”

He added, “You know, we have tough negotiations in the United Nations. In such a case, I was thinking of playing a Gangnam Style dance, so then everyone can stop and dance. Maybe you can bring U.N. style.”

At the end of their public statements, Psy crossed his wrists, a stance used in the ubiquitous horsey dance. And the usually mild-mannered, straight-laced Ban also followed suit.

“Can you teach me?” Ban asked politely.

Psy’s arm moved in a fluid, wave-like motion as his shoulders bounced as if he was riding an imaginary horse - as did the Secretary General’s.

Ban joins a litany of celebrities whom Psy has coached in the ways of “Gangnam Style.” Psy has galloped with Hugh Jackman (wearing Wolverine blades), Britney Spears, Ellen DeGeneres and the BBC Formula 1 team.

Psy should be our new weapon of Peace. We air drop him and his dancers into war zones. He will have them all drop their guns and dance Gangnam Style in a matter of minutes. He could lead a World Wide day of Gangnam Style starting at the UN. Hey Psy, put in a call to Kim Jong un, offer to teach all of N. Korea.

"master of cheesy dancing." – that's all you got to say about that very smart, very likable, very talented dude? Also, very respectful to the Secretary-General.

Mr. Ban Ki-Moon came to my college last Friday – he was unexpectedly funny! He was really intelligent, but was able to connect with us as well. Great guy.
