Arrests made in shooting of Pakistani schoolgirl Malala
[Updated at 5:55 a.m. ET] Six people have been arrested in connection with the shooting of Malala Yousufzai, the teenage activist who spoke out against the Taliban, though the main suspect still is on the loose, Pakistani police told CNN exclusively.
Police on Wednesday identified Atta Ullah Khan, a 23-year-old from the Swat district where Malala was attacked, as the main suspect. Authorities are searching for Khan, who was studying for a master's degree in chemistry, police say. The Taliban-heavy Swat Valley is in the northwestern part of Pakistan.
Six men accused of facilitating the attack were arrested, police said Wednesday. Also detained were Khan's fiancée, mother and brother, though they aren't accused of involvement in the attack, police said.
It's unclear whether Khan was at the scene and tried to shoot Malala or if he was considered the leader behind the plan to kill her.
Malala, who has become a global symbol of courage after being shot in the head by the Taliban for demanding education for girls, is currently receiving treatment at a hospital in Birmingham, England.
She stood with the aid of nurses Friday for the first time since the October 9 shooting and was "communicating very freely," according to the director of the hospital. Malala can't speak because she has a tracheotomy tube inserted to protect her airway, which was swollen after her gunshot injury, but she is writing coherent sentences, said Dave Rosser, director of University Hospitals Birmingham.
Friday's progress report - more detailed than previous updates - suggests that the 15-year-old could make a good recovery.
The Pakistani Taliban has claimed responsibility for the shooting and vowed to kill Malala if she recovers from her injuries.

It's getting harder to tell the taliban from the average democratic legislator anymore given their shared interests in sharia-style law directed at, and most definitely not for, women.

That is the funniest and most ridiculous statement I've seen all day, kudos for your stupidity! I'm not a democrat or republican or a woman, but I can say that the republicans want to be involved in a woman's right of using and having ready access availability to contraceptives, abortion and want to kill planned parent hood which not only provides consultation on the previously mentioned, but also provides breast exams and other health related services to woman and it's financial impact to us yearly is .00001 percent of the gross. Regardless on your stance of any of the above statements, it's the republicans pushing that agenda. You can't name 1 democrat, even conservative, that is on the same prerogative. So keep trolling, I guess your pontification will be right at some point, even a broken clock is right twice a day. It is that type of nonsense and way of thinking (or lack thereof) that needs to stop because facts just can't enter through your thick, fact stopping skull. What a blessing from god, that shes recoving so quickly and fairly well:) if we had more out spoken activists like Malala who spoke for womens rights in any aspect, the Taliban would be running like a whiped dog. From the examples each has presented, it is clear that the purpose of religion is to try to give us all something to "fear." This "something" can't be seen, addressed or verified and that's just the way organized religion wants it. It's not enough to ask people to simply "have faith" when the actions of these "faithful" have caused so much death and destruction; the slaughter of innocents including the attempt slaughter of this child. Actions speak louder than words, and it's time people of planet Earth paid more attention to the actions, and have less faith in the "words."
So will Pakistan prosecute them or give them a medal for doing Allah's will?
Considering that the majority of the population in Pakistan deemed the attack evil and cowardly, I would say they prosecute the attackers, and you can give yourself an award for being a special kind of idiot.

Many Indians have never gotten over the fact that a part of "mother India" was broken up to form Pakistan back in 1947. Pakistan is here, and will shake out of the problems that are the legacy of military dictators and their double games that created these terrorists. A brave young girl like Malala who has inspired the world was not raised in a vacuum. She was raised in a country of a big hearted, hospitable people who are on the road to leaving the vestiges of dictatorship (the taliban and their right wing sympathizers in Pakistan being one of them) behind them.

I don't think it's the religion that needs to be faulted. It's those that perpetrate horrific acts in the name of God (or Allah..same thing). It is no different than all the crazy Christian's who spread hate and divisiveness, kill people because they disagree with abortion etc etc etc.
