Smoldering wreckage was all that was left of a small home-built plane that crashed Tuesday, killing at least two, in a wide open, plowed field near Byron, California.

The single-engine Glasair III went down “under unknown circumstances” just under five miles from the next airport, said Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor.

Aerial video from CNN affiliate KPIX showed no apparent obstructions such as tall trees or power lines near the crash site.

Area resident Joshua McLean told KPIX  he saw the engine whirring overhead and then saw the plane plummet.

“It was about 1,500 feet off the ground and corkscrewing toward the ground,” McLean said. “When it hit the ground, you could feel the rumble,” he said.

The Costa County Sheriff's office found two bodies, which they have not yet identified.

The FAA categorizes the plane as “Amateur Built,” and lists the two-seat, single-engine aircraf as belonging to DSB, Inc. in Fernley, Nevada.
