Israel vows punishment for rocket attacks

[Updated at 12:40 p.m.] Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel "neither chose nor initiated this escalation, but if it continues we are prepared for much more extensive and deeper action. In any case, we will continue with preventative operations. Whoever intends to attack Israeli citizens needs to know that he will bear the consequences."

Defense Minister Ehud Barak toured areas hit by rockets in southern Israel and said the military "is working efficiently against all the terror elements.  Since the beginning of the month, 15 active terrorists have been killed in the act, and more have been injured."  He wished a speedy recovery to those injured by rockets fired from Gaza.  "Hamas will receive its punishment for what has happened here," he vowed, promising that Israel will "work with patience and level-headedness."

"There is no way to eliminate the hatred or hostility entrenched in Hamas. But the IDF will act on the border, from the air, and in any other necessary way in order to strike down those who attempt to cause us harm," he said.

[Updated at 9:02 a.m. ET] As dozens of Palestinian rockets rained down on southern Israel, the country's air force carried out new raids on positions in Gaza on Wednesday. Two days of air strikes have so far killed four Palestinians.

Israeli strikes have killed two Hamas militants, journalist Tala Abu Rahma reports. Nine people have been injured, including two critically, in Gaza from the air strikes.

A spokesman for Islamic Jihad said today they will respond to any and all activity by the Israeli military when the time comes.

[Posted at 3:32 a.m. ET] An Israeli air raid on Gaza early Wednesday killed a Palestinian, bringing the total killed in overnight strikes to three, health authorities said.

The attack early Wednesday near Khan Younis also seriously wounded nine people, said Ashraf al-Qidra, the spokesman of the health ministry in Gaza. It came after an airstrike late Tuesday that killed two Palestinians and seriously wounded two others.

The Israeli Defense Forces said Wednesday that the aircraft had been responding to rocket fire and that tanks had shelled "terrorist targets" in Gaza.

More than 40 rockets were fired at southern Israel from Gaza overnight, seriously wounding three people, Israeli police spokesman Mickey Rosenfeld said.

Israeli areas around Gaza are under heightened alert amid fears that more rockets could be launched.

The Israel Defense Forces said aircraft had targeted two rocket-launching squads in Gaza in the strike on Beit Hanoun late Tuesday. The two Palestinians killed were militants from Al-Qassam group, the military wing of Hamas, the IDF said.

What much of the world is not aware of is that the Islamic Jihadi terrorists are firing rockets into Israel literally every day.

Darkelf, logic would dictate that if Hamas and other groups are losing a war that badly, they should then make peace.

This is a twisted headline; the story is about the 40 + rockets fired at civilians, NOT the terrorists who died while in the act. The strike did not kill "a Palestinian." The strike specifically targeted a "Palestinian who was firing indiscriminately at citizens in residential centers." Why bother writing the article at all if your slant is so biased and twisted?

I disagree Liz, Terrorist is a term use by those on the receiving end of the attack. So Im pretty sure you Jews are the terrorist here. Your people are openly talking on the news about wanting all Palestinians dead or gone from their land. Yes I said their land,They cultivated and maintained it for hundreds of years after the Jews left it.

Darkelf, I'll post my definitions again. I think most civilized people will agree.

soldier – a person who fights other soldiers on a defined battlefield within the limits of established rules of warfare.

terrorist – a criminal who drops a grenade in a baby carriage and runs.

There is absolutely no comparison between IDF and Hamas (and their ilk) in this situation. The terrorists target civilians, then run and hide among their own civilian population. The IDF target terrorists and occasionally Palestinian civilians are caught in the crossfire, due to the fact that the terrorists are hiding among them. It is all in WHO YOU TARGET and WHAT BATTLEFIELD YOU CHOOSE. Thankfully, most of the world understands this, and do NOT see things your way.

And please point out to me a specific comment on this board made by a Jew advocating the killing of all Palestinians. I've been here for a couple of years and have not seen a single one. You comment is either tragically mistaken or blatantly hateful. Bigots like you have no place here. Go find a Jihadist or neo Nazi board, where your kind is welcome.

Thedarkelf... The definition of terrorism is DELIBERATE ATTACKING OF NON-COMBATANTS WITH POLITICAL GOALS IN MIND. Try to use it in the future and you will never confuse terrorism with anything else.

while the tuth is that a group of terrorists were shooting into israel and the IDF killed 3 of them.

CNN clearly has Arab Muslim reports regarding the Middle east.
and they are ONLY pro Arab Muslims.

This is stupid how it reads Israel killed 3 palestinians, and not how 3 terrorists were killed during an attack on israel from Gaza.

CNN, you are racist and you turn a blind eye to the truth

I mean I try not to take sides, but it is kind of hard not to. What are the Palestinian people left to do?

Israel has already taken a vast majority of their land, treats them as third class citizens, continues to murder them, continues to take their land forcing them into refugee camps, does not allow them to govern themselves...

they have a terror organizaion as their leader
they constently fire rockets into israel
      they are aginst peace

their own goverment takes money from the people to buy more arms

"What are the Palestinian people left to do?" _____ Stop violence and ask for peace negotiations.

"Israel has already taken a vast majority of their land..." _____ The land in question NEVER was "their". It was part of the Ottoman Empire (Turkey) for at least 600 years prior to WWI, then it belonged to the British Empire until 1948. 'Palestinians' are neither Turks nor Brits.

"...treats them as third class citizens..." ______ This is another lie. 'Palestinians living in the West Bank and Gaza are NOT CITIZENS of Israel. Arabs living in Israel are FIRST CLASS citizens having the very same equal rights all other Israelis have.

"...continues to murder them..." _____ Tough luck. As long as the Palestinians are willing the war to continue it will continue and more Palestinians will be killed. When the number of dead Palestinians will satisfy those still alive they will ask for peace.

"...continues to take their land forcing them into refugee camps..." _____ Still another lie. Israel DID NOT take any land since 1967 when it took land from the Arab states. NOT from Palestinians. Further, there are no refugee camps in Israel. Not a single one.

"...does not allow them to govern themselves..." _____ A HUGE blatant lie. Palestinians of Gaza and the West Bank are governed by their own democratically elected governments of Hamas and Arrab respectively.

When you LIE, John, at least try to make your lies believable.

Maybe your pals should stop refusing to meet with Israel? How can you have a two state solution if one side refuses to sit down and accept a country of their own they were offered 95% of what they want right off the bat during the Camp David accords and stormed out and have refused to meet ever since. They don't want a two state solution and play the world for fools

Forget it Oren, The US has finely opened it eyes to the truth of the Palestinian genocide. The jews are attempting to steal all the land for themselves that belongs to the Palestinians. You cannot claim land that has been cared for for a thousand years that your people abandoned. The Jews lied to the US but the jig is up and youll get no more support from the people. Just like the Germans were victimized by the Jews after the war, so shall the jews be victimized by the world

In 1948 the British left and the UN offered to divide this (now NO ONE'S) land and create two sattes there, one for the Jews in areas with the Jewish majority and the other for the Arabs in areas with the Arab majority. The Jewws accepted the UN offer and declared a state. The Arabs rejected it and declared a war. The rest is history...

Violence is never the solution... I can understand why hammas would resort to it when it seems like there is nothing left to do. But only bad comes from killing.

Israel needs to realize what they did is f*in inhumane, and return the land that they stole
and hammas needs to stop retaliating with violence.

Israel defines itself as a Jewish state and will never accept a non apartheid democracy with a Jewish minority. Continuing illegal annexations and settlement expansion have also precluded any negotiated two state solution. Justice may now be served only by UN and NATO imposing resolution just as involuntary, disruptive and humiliating to Israel as Israel has wreaked upon occupied Palestine for generations. The Jewish State must be made to recognize an armed Palestine with externally enforced autonomy, eviction of all settlers, true contiguity encompassing Gaza, the West Bank and Jerusalem together, neither pinched nor parceled, and pay punitive reparations.

Apartheid democracy? No. Arab Israeli citizens have the right to vote, and there are about a half million of them of voting age. Your comment is an insult to South African blacks who actually lived through apartheid.

And as harsh as it sounds, Israel doesn't HAVE to give land to anybody. They won 4 wars. How many do they need to win to make it decisive? Keep in mind, the Arabs were the attackers in each of those wars. But they don't want all the land anyway. They are willing to give up Gaza and West Bank. All they need is for the Palestinian side to give up on its demands for more.

JohnWV... If you want JUSTICE you may consider that an average citizens of the Arab world owns TWELVE TIMES MORE land than an average Israeli. This means that in order to restore justice the Arab states should give Israel the amount of land equal to 11 (ELEVEN) Israels today.

The UN Human Rights Council has adjudged the Jewish state guilty of violating international law by punitively destroying infrastructure and killing civilians of occupied and besieged Palestine. The Jews enjoy a kill ratio of near one hundred to one. As was the WW2 French Underground, occupied Palestine is allowed to resist and, within limits, kill its occupiers. Doing so is neither terrorism nor a war crime. The Palestinian's response with crude rockets is pathetic. But those rockets do confirm that Palestine will not accept defeat, they “give proof through the night that (their) flag is still there.”

I guarantee you that if the Hamas fighters stopped hiding in urban areas and using civilians as 'cover' or an attempt to avoid getting struck, the ratio wouldn't be so high.
