Ohio fast food employee is fired after fleeing robber
Mary Archer had been held up twice before at the Arby’s restaurant in Fairborn, Ohio, where she was the manager on duty, her daughter said. She came away unscathed both times.
But after the third robbery Friday, when a man with a knife entered the store and demanded the assistant manager turn over the restaurant’s money, her boss fired her.
“I just never thought that this would happen to me, especially since my life was at stake,” she told CNN affiliate WHIO.
Archer was terminated for staying at the restaurant by herself, “long after hours,” which is in violation of Arby’s franchise security policy, said John Gray, vice-president of corporate communications for Arby’s Restaurant Group, Inc.
The store location where she worked is a franchise that is not corporate-owned, he said.
Archer was not injured in the attempted robbery, even though she got into an altercation with the knife-wielding intruder.
“I had pushed him away,” she said, “because I’m like, I’m not going to die in Arby’s tonight. I’m just not.”
She screamed for help through the drive-through window, then jumped out of it to get away from the man, who fled. Someone heard Archer and called police.
Later, Archer signed a document her supervisor handed her, stating that she had violated security policy.
It was the end of her employment. January would have marked 23 years with the company, she said.
She crumpled up the security notice out of frustration.
“She had been warned in the past and had received a written warning that if she did it again she would be terminated,” Gray explained, saying that the policy was to preserve employee safety.
Archer said she was at the restaurant late, because she was closing up shop. Then she heard someone at the door. It was the man with the knife.
“We have no alarms, no cameras,” she said. “That should have been nipped in the bud that very first attempt.”
Archer’s daughter told WHIO the store had been robbed three times in the past six months and that her mother had been on duty each time.
“I don’t want my job back,” Archer said.
She is happy to be alive.

If its in the hood I'm sure everyone knows they don't have cameras or alarms so the robbers keep coming... As for the lady she is crazy for being there alone way after hours and not securing the facility if she's staying late.
Boycott Arby's if the woman isn't rehired!
Why boycott Arby's? She was warned before including a letter telling her she would be terminated if she did it again. Her fault. As Manager she should have known and followed the rules. Who's to say she hadn't done it more often and/or had her employees stay late by themselves putting her Employees at risk? Don't feel sorry for her. In 23 years you think she would understand that one simple rule. A LOT of late and 24 hour stores carry the same policy. And it's for a reason.
Who wants to be responsible if this woman gets hurt or even killed because she can't follow the rules. She should be fired.
I very much agree with you Spidey... At first glance, I was thinking she was fired unfairly. However, if one reads the full article, one will find that she has been in violation multiple times of security protocal and warned in the past that if she violated the policy she would be terminated. I'm tired of everyone wanting to boycott businesses everytime a business does something that is not agreeable by a group. I do however agree with one statement in the article. After the first robbery, there should have been additional security ramped up at this resteraunt i.e. cameras... Otherwise, I think the resteraunt is in the right to terminate her.
If she was there after hours, alone... why weren't the doors locked? Also, after two other robberies, if I continued to insist on being in the store after hours by myself, I'd have armed myself (of course, I do anyway, but that's beside the point). There has got to be something we're not being told here.
It's hip to fight companies even if boycotting your local arbies does absolutely nothing, seeing as how this wasn't a corporate-owned location!

Had she followed the rules designed to keep her safe, nothing would have happened, as she would have been home safe and sound.
As a manager she may have duties that she has to do after hours and if she kept and employee over for protection the owners would have likely fired her and if she did not get her work done the would have fired her. Most employees are put in an untenable position and have to break rules to comply with owners wish lists. Where I work they use MOL laws to punish workers without regards for fairness, managers that break the same MOL laws are givin a pass while we get time off without pay due to management lack of skills or ability to manage. Workers always pay!
Typical corporate America......they put these so-called rules in place, in this case, for the "safety" of the employee. But corporate america turns a blind eye when their workers are working overtime to get their jobs done. We in the management field refer to this as "casual overtime" and the companies cover their asses by stating that overtime is not required but damn you if you are not there working before and after the normal hours to get the jobs done!! Its a set up to fail, because, especially with her position, there is not physical way to get all you need to get done within your allotted time frame of workable paid hours. The owners expect that you are there working under the radar. They only gave her that warning to cover their own legal requirements, knowing full well that she was working past her daily scheduled time. Its a roll of the dice for both parties concerned, but she's the one taking the hit for it. She's a hard worker, and a responsible worker, not a rule breaker. Those of you who actually work for a living know that NO JOB can be done within your scheduled time! I'd hire her in a second.....she is a rare breed, old school, and the Arby's franchise just lost one of their best employees!

It is good that she is alive. A boycott of Arby's isnt necessary...they already suck and should be closing down soon

I liked the part where she derisively said "I'm not dying at ARBY'S tonight." Oh, so now you're above that huh? Strange how she was an assistant manager probably making $15/hr max and is 40+ years old.
When you get hired at a company like that you get given a rulebook or at least access to one. It was her job to know the rules being an assistant manager. She broke the rules, she's fired.
I said nearly the same thing...that I wasn't going to die in front of my apartment building after a night class.....when I was confronted with a guy in the bushes who meant to harm me. So yes, she might have said that to herself.
I'll be sure to bring a pistol if I ever visit an Arby's resaurant.
