A group of people got into a fight with a U.S. airman Thursday inside a gated housing area of an Air Force base in New Mexico. One of them grabbed his gun and shot him, police say.
Now authorities in Albuquerque are searching for the suspects.
The airman is in stable and satisfactory condition, according to Robert Gibbs, a spokesman for Albuquerque police. SWAT and K-9 units are helping in the search.
The airman was on patrol in the Maxwell housing area of Kirtland Air Force Base, which is separate from the base itself, when he noticed the suspicious group and approached them, according to base spokesman Dan Monahan.
I'm assuming the Airman was military police. Otherwise, I am not sure why he'd be patrolling. But yeah, really awkward story, here. Likely a bunch of thugs who will never mount to anything except someone's cellmate.
My knowledge is from the Navy, Air Force maybe different. If he was patrolling in a housing area with a gun he was attached to base security. He may or may not be actual military police.
In the Navy Sailors can be assigned a duty billet as security personnel. They receive all the necessary training and must pass qualifications before they start. In the end they have some but not all the skills and authority of full fledged militiary police personnel. Think of them as temporarily deputised to assist the security force and when the assignment ends they return to their normal career path. Asssignments like this are good to change the scenery and develop secondary skills.
Isnt maxwell afb in Alabama?
Thank you, I thought I was mis-reading the story. This is typical of workplace violance reporting : screw up the story and make everyone confused.
You are correct Maxwell is in Alabama.
Yes it is. But the article is not talking about Maxwell AFB, AL. It's talking about a housing community near Kirtland AFB, NM that is named "Maxwell Housing".
Yes, Maxwell AFB is in Alabama but Maxwell Housing area is at Kirtland AFB in Albuquerque NM
Maxwell AFB is in Alabama. The Maxwell housing area is off of Kirtland AFB in New Mexico.
Your post contains more accurate information than the story itself.
Well, at least they got the state correct Ha Ha Ha !
Even more confusing....
Maxwell AFB has an annex. It's called Gunter. which is separate from Maxwell. And let me tell you, that place is horrible.
And to add to the confusion, Gunter is the name of the monkey that Prof Farnsworth fitted at hat onto in Futurama, making him super intelligent.
yes, Maxwell AFB is in Alabama.
im 1/2 mile from this now. maxwell housing is off gibson blvd just as the main entrances are. housing area is west of san mateo, east of Carlisle blvd on gibson in Albuquerque.
Thanks.......MapQuest!!!!
Maxwell AFB is in Alabama, not New Mexico. How this reporter got that one mixed up is beyond me. Time for a quick retraction and correction.
Maxwell housing area of Kirtland AFB, New Mexico. It says nothing about Maxwell AFB.
Maxwell Housing Unit. Kirtland Air Force Base, New Mexico. Do I get a by line? 😀
Yeah, there is only Kirtland, Cannon, and Holloman in New Mexico. Maxwell AFB exists, but not much more than a civilian employer
Gee, another case of rushing-to-press with assumptions rather than fact. Way to go, CNN; you're certainly living up to your reputation!
Rare AF security Forces patrol alone, but regardless, losing your weapon in an altercation, better be able to explain well or career as USAF SF is over, time to cross train.
It was 4 on 1 and apparently they got in a fight and they were able to grab his gun - this is from the Albuquerque Journal:
The airman told investigators he was patrolling the Maxwell housing area near the base when he spotted four men, three dressed in black and one wearing a red hooded sweat shirt, Gibbs said. There was an altercation and the security officer said one of the suspects was able to grab the officer’s gun and shoot him with it.
I spent 20 years as a Security Policeman (76 – 96). It was rare if did have two people patrolling together. A lot has changed since then, it might be the other way now. After reading the comments on here, it's obvious that CNN has a problem with trolls posting.
Maxwell Air Force Base is in Alabama.
This has already been caught and explained above.
Not really. Most likely they're asleep in their cars parked somewhere obscure.
A lot like your life, very obscure.
How many watches have you stood? Sounds like you're the real dirt bag.
tlmccl How many watches have you stood? Sounds like you're the real Dirtbag!
Er..excuse me, CNN, but you have a problem...Maxwell Air Force base is near Montgomery, Alabama – and this story seems to be in New Mexico. Either you have the city and State wrong, or the name of the base wrong... Don't trust new, google Maxwell Air Force Base and see for yourselves!!!!!
Nothing destroys the credibility of an article or it's outlet than for it to contain obvious, dumb mistakes.
cant you read it says maxwell housing not maxwell afb!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If the cost of doing crime is raised then the criminals will think twice before committing such a crime. In the case of this shooting it was attempted murder so the participants in this crime should suffer the old west method of justice, hang them from the nearest tree until dead.
If this is so, then why are so many state's death rows filled with people awaiting execution?
People, the article is not wrong. It states this is occurring at Kirtland AFB in Albuquerque, NM. The shooting happened in a military housing area that is off-base. That housing community is named Maxwell Housing. Most military housing communities have their own names.
Now it does. Previous version said Maxwell AFB, not Maxwell housing area. While CNN changed it, they didn't note it had been changed and kept the original posting time.
Thanks, Hunter. I didn't realize that. I thought if they edited it a by-line would be added.
