Suspects at large after shooting at Air Force base annex

A group of people got into a fight with a U.S. airman Thursday inside a gated housing area of an Air Force base in New Mexico.  One of them grabbed his gun and shot him, police say.

Now authorities in Albuquerque are searching for the suspects.

The airman is in stable and satisfactory condition, according to Robert Gibbs, a spokesman for Albuquerque police.  SWAT and K-9 units are helping in the search.

The airman was on patrol in the Maxwell housing area of Kirtland Air Force Base, which is separate from the base itself, when he noticed the suspicious group and approached them, according to base spokesman Dan Monahan.

Thats what alot of people did and the same with the guy in Florida who killed Trayvon! Much better outcome for the good guy when your instincts take over!

    • Huh??

Well, he was certainly pretty stupid to give them his gun. Whenever he recovers, this soldier needs retraining.

ople on here speculate as to why the "airman" lost his weapon. Actually, it's entirely possible that they closed the distance before he could draw the weapon. He also may have unholstered it but the perpatrators closed on him before he could bring it to bear. I doubt he gave it to them. Ideally he would call for back up and monitor from a distance. And, I don't know the Air FOrce Rules of Engagement but there are probably escalation of force steps he had to go through which he may have tried and may be the reason he was relieved of hisweapon and shot.

You obviously have no idea of the rules of engagement dictated by AF Security Police training.

Nita, I agree with you wholeheartedly. I hope that the airman has a quick recovery and the thugs are caught soon as well!

Wow People... Nothing better to do today then to make wild assumptions?? Two possible reasons his weapon was taken, #1- Shootings on a military base or in base housing involving an SP (Security Police) are very rare.. So he probably didn't think he was in harms way at first, just needed to break up an altercation. #2 most of these Airman SPs on patrol are young kids out of boot camp. Most new airman out of boot camp are not experienced with diffusing situations yet. The person who shot him, if they are active duty, they are in worse trouble than if they were in the civ world.. He/She will in Leavenworth where there is no possibility of parole..

right and have all the bleeding heart liberals second guess it till the second coming of Christ. Even Zimmerman didn't get away with calling 911 before he was attacked. He should have called for back up and waited it out!

Yes, the President personally wrote a memo that stated military bases can only use one soldier, airmen, Marine, or sailor to patrol bases.

AF police usually travel alone. Manning cuts. They also do not have "soverign immunity" like CIV cops. They do something wrong... shoot the wrong person, shoot an unarmed person, they are held personally liable. As such military cops are far less likely to shoot first/question later.

The airman was probably more scared of the bureucracy and second guessing than the criminals. He would have been subjected relentless scrutiny to if he would have pulled the trigger in a noncombat environment. Either way his career was over. BTW, I am in the Air Force.

For all of you that are so quick to judge - it didn't say he GAVE them his gun - it said they took it - if he was alone against a crowd - then I would say he's lucky to be alive.
