The Social Security numbers of millions of South Carolinians, as well as credit and debit card information for hundreds of thousands, have been hacked in what the state's governor described Friday as an international cyberattack.
"This is not a good day for South Carolina," Gov. Nikki Haley told reporters.
The governor explained that a "server that warehouses all our taxpayer information was breached and taxpayer information was stolen."
The state's Department of Revenue explained in a press release that it first learned of a possible breach on October 10, after which the state contracted information security firm Mandiant to conduct an investigation.
The "hole" in the system was closed October 20. Over the next several days, state authorities determined that more than 3.6 million Social Security numbers may have been affected. So, too, were 387,000 credit card numbers - though only 16,000 of those were unencrypted.
On Friday, state officials laid out efforts to determine what happened and protect the personal information of taxpayers. While noting that not everyone had their information breached, Haley urged everyone who filed a tax return in South Carolina from 1998 through now to take advantage of credit protection services being offered by the state.
"While we now have it protected, we want to make sure that everybody understands that our state will respond with a big, large-scale plan that is somewhat unprecedented to take care of this problem," the governor said.
palintwit...I have spent a lifetime studying and practicing military tactics. I would like to see the sources that you got your information from ie "long theorized that the reason the south lost the Civil War is because of the high number of mentally challenged soldiers in the army, a direct result of generations of inbreeding". Everything I have read suggests the South lost the disgusting black eye on our young history as a nation because the South was an agrarian society whereas the North was an industrialized society. So they simply got outmanned and gunned based on recourses. Further, since neither one of us were there all we can rely on is the accounts from the time. From what I understand, man to man the South produced a much better soldier based on marksmanship skills. Kids that grew up hunting forced onto the battlefield. Again from what I have read, the best officers from top to bottom fought on the side of the South. Gen. Lee was not required to turn over his sword at the surrender table due to the amount of respect that he commanded from both sides. Do some research.
Along with practicing military tactics I have had the opportunity to travel throughout the globe. So to the rest of you that find this unfortunate situation as an opportunity to demean the states south of the Mason-Dixon Line...really? Inbred toothless abominations...grow up. We are supposed to be united under the flag of the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. If you want to continue down that road travel to places like upstate NY or outside of major cities in NH, CA, and every other state in the union. You will see the same people that you so easily refer to as inbred and toothless.
Back to the South palintwit, if you do the research you will realize that a disproportionate amount of people from south of the Mason-Dixon line are in the US military today. The next time you decide to disparage any of these people go visit Arlington.
Sorry again for any grammatical errors, but I have a Southern education so of course it is expected.
Scott, First "Thank you for serving." Next – for those think the south is that bad....move – see that the grass is not greener on the other side. I have also lived in about 10 different states and everyone is the same, we eat, sleep, go to work, love our family and live, just like everyone else all over the United States. This country should be UNITED – it is US – not infadels, not inbreds. We are Americans – respect me and I will respect you. Thank you again Scott. Wonderful piece of work.

i would like to see who the prvate company is that was contracted to host the data. they should be help up so that other states know....
They also got businesses info now and more than just social security numbers!
This is just another example of encouraging money transactions on the Web under the guize of "going green". Organizations are simply not investing the money they save by abandoning "paper" and re-investing it into cyber protection.
