How to help after the superstorm

Superstorm Sandy smashed into the U.S. East Coast on Monday night, triggering floods, fires and devastation. At least 29 people are known to have died in the United States and one in Canada, adding to the storm’s earlier toll of 67 after it hit the Caribbean.

Millions were without power, and floods have hit homes and the New York subway system. Relief groups are working to make sure everyone affected by the storm is cared for, and you can help.

Donate blood - The Red Cross had to cancel about 100 blood drives because of the storm and supplies are running low. Visit RedCrossBlood.org or call 1-800-RED-CROSS to schedule a donation appointment in your area.

Give food and shelter - The Red Cross and Salvation Army are providing emergency shelter and meals for evacuees.

Help children in need - Save the Children and World Vision are paying special attention to the needs of children affected by the storm.

Care for animals -  The Humane Society of the United States has an animal rescue team working to save the lives of animals caught in the storm.

Provide emergency supplies - AmeriCares, Direct Relief International and Feeding America are providing food, medical supplies and emergency kits for people in need.

Join in the cleanup - Team Rubicon has dispatched veteran field teams to start working right away, and Samaritan's Purse is looking for volunteers to help rebuild after the storm passes.

Help outside the United States - Sandy took a deadly toll on the Caribbean before it hit the United States. Operation USA and the International Medical Corps are helping people affected by Sandy in Haiti and Cuba.

Stay informed - For ways to help, visit Impact Your World. If you are in the Northeast and know of a need where you live, tweet @CNNImpact.

If you are planning to give to a nonprofit in the wake of any disaster, verify it is legitimate. Charity evaluators such as Guidestar and Charity Navigator are good ways to check that the organization you're donating to is established and your funds will go where you intend.

I'm a pirate and so was me grandpappy.

He sang this song while fishin from the dingy:

Fifteen men on a dead man's chest/Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum/Drink and the devil had done for the rest/Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum./The mate was fixed by the bosun's pike/The bosun brained with a marlinspike/And cookey's throat was marked belike/It had been gripped by fingers ten;/And there they lay, all good dead men/Like break o'day in a boozing ken/Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum…

I had to reply to this comment:

      John

Make More Anti Islamic Movie and Surely America will hit by Earth Quake Next Time.

I do feel for the people affected by this tragedy. Already 29 lost their lives and it's going to get worse. It's horrible and I plan on donating to World Vision and Samaritian's purse who will help those affected. BUT – how can I not respond to someone who thinks we'll have an earthquake because of and anti-Islamic movie? These kind of people are actually voting – it hurts my heart.

Please recognize the importance of government and the need to support resources like firefighters, police, 1st responders, mayors, governors, and the federal government. We need Obama not a businessman who doesn't get how important these services are. Hurricane Sandy shows that churches and private citizens cannot replace government. Prayers for all.

People who use this tragedy as a political tool are, IMHO, insensitive tools themselves. Campaign for your candidate elsewhere, Helen.

    John,

An anti Islamic movie did nothing. Terrorists attacked our consulate in Behngazi because they hate Americans. Before the attack only 17 people ever saw that movie (youtupe video actually). Don't believe everyting you hear – esp. not from this adminsitration.

People, look beyond your narrow view of this administration to the scope of this storm, which transcends politics; this is a time to pull together, not to tear down.
This storm affected more than mere republicans or democrats, it affected the Caribbean and America.
Politicizing this seems just so small and petty, and I cannot stand to see people doing this; it looks so pathetic.
    Grow up, people.
    This storm didn't have a (D) or a (R) behind it.

@ John, 2:39pm... Earthquakes have been shaking, breaking and building the Earth for longer than people have been here to unknowingly build their homes in harms way. Making weak, foolish, anti-islamic movies has no effect on the routine stress-reducing slippage along known fault lines. It would happen even if we were all as perfect as angels. Don't Try To Set Up An "I told you so" Situation in support of Islam or any other IDEOLOGY, using naturally occurring somewhat-predictable events in support of manmade ideas attempting to define God. That being said, we all need to be aware of massive slippage due along New Madrid or other lines in central U.S. sometime from now to when? next fifty-some years? Natural occurrence, no fear, learn, prepare. God loves you and wants you to live in peaceful knowledge, Not cowering in fear.

Shame on you US Government for not taking care of the infrastructure needed by hard working Americans in cases like storms that can affect millions. as an Engeneer I find it hard to understand that we put man on the moon, yet still use the most antiquated and outdsted power grid in the world to provide electricity via poles.

why, Thank you for the praise. Astonishment here that anyone noticed what we say. We must be more careful of wording. Example being, a few days ago we referred to Jordan as a nation and we should have said Kingdom, when wondering if surrounding lands could help Jordan care for incomming refugees. And we like reading what you say.

I read on another thread some people feel this storm has been hyped as a "superstorm"! It's called that when 2 or more systems collide & make a huge mass of rotating storm systems! It's not necessary for a storm to be a cat4-5 to be destructive! Just look at what has happened to 15 states on the eastern seaboard; don't tell me this is not a disaster! In '01 Tropical storm Allison caused a 100 year flood in Houston & surrounding areas! We we're under water for days, semi trucks were floating on I-10 & it took months to get necessities back! Anytime cities are under water & critters are swiming around in your livingroom, it's a devastation! Prayers & good thoughts to all affected, I feel y'all! Also, those of us who aren't, please donate $$, water, non-perishable food, blankets, clothing, diapers, petfood & anything else you can part w/to help centers in your area! God Bless America & the Carribean!!

As a survivor of the Joplin MO tornado, people wanting to help the victims give to the faith based community and your non for profit like Red Cross and Salvation Army, that is who helped us. Monies sent to the city tornado relief fund stayed with the city not the victims. Just saying!
