Signs of progress, though damage and heartache remain after Sandy

Editor's note: The aftermath of Superstorm Sandy focused Thursday on a search for the missing and restoration of power. The storm's overall death toll stood at 161, including at least 92 people in the United States, two in Canada and 67 in the Caribbean.

[Updated at 4:30 a.m.] The New York Police Department said early Friday morning that the death toll from the storm had gone up four more to 41 in New York City.

Fresh charges filed against ex-Penn State officials in Sandusky case

[Updated at 1:01 p.m. ET] New charges have been filed against three former Penn State officials in the Jerry Sandusky child rape scandal, accused of having "used their positions to conceal and cover up for years the activities of a known child predator," Pennsylvania's attorney general said Thursday.

Former Penn State University President Graham Spanier - charged for the first time in the case - and former Athletic Director Tim Curley and ex-Vice President Gary Schultz now face the same five charges: obstruction of justice, perjury, conspiracy, endangering the welfare of children and failure to report allegations of child abuse.

Watch live spacewalk via astronauts' helmet cameras

They've strapped on their gear, exited the International Space Station, and now astronauts Sunita Williams and Aki Hoshide are doing a spacewalk - with cameras on their helmets, allowing the world to watch their every move.

The two astronauts are working to fix an ammonia leak.

Initial jobless claims fall

The number of people filing for initial jobless claims fell by 9,000 in the latest week to 363,000, the U.S. government just announced.

U.S. private-sector employers added 158,000 jobs in October, payroll-processor ADP says.

Syrian government using 'vacuum bombs,' opposition says

An array of explosives, from shells to barrel bombs, fell on Syrian cities in another day of bloodshed Thursday, according to activists fighting to overthrow President Bashar al-Assad.

The Local Coordination Committees accused the government of using "vacuum bombs." CNN cannot independently confirm the claims because the Syrian government has limited access to international journalists. Damascus has not commented on the accusations.

Also known as thermobaric explosives, they are effective at spreading destruction through urban areas, according to military experts. The LCC also repeated claims that the government used cluster bombs.

Several injured at USC Halloween party shooting

[Updated 6:54 a.m. ET] A Halloween party erupted in gunfire that left several people wounded at the University of Southern California at Los Angeles, campus officials said.

The shooting occurred during an argument between two men Wednesday night, according to Capt. David Carlisle of the university's department of public safety. Officials lifted a campus lockdown after a few hours. FULL POST

22 killed in fuel tanker explosion in Saudi Arabia

[Updated at 1:51 p.m. ET] A fuel tanker rammed into a bridge and exploded into a ball of fire Thursday, killing 22 people and sending flames sweeping over the Saudi Arabia capital, state television reported.

In addition to the fatalities, at least 111 others were wounded, according to the report.

3 killed in crush at Madrid Halloween party

Three young women were killed and two others are in serious condition after being crushed in a crowd at a Halloween party in Madrid early Thursday morning, the spokesman for Madrid's ambulance service told CNN.
