A tie for Obama and Romney in nation's first results

The first presidential election results are in - and it's a tie.

President Barack Obama and his Republican rival, Mitt Romney, each received five votes in Dixville Notch, New Hampshire.

The town in the state's northeast corner has opened its polls shortly after midnight each election day since 1960 - but today's tie was the first in its history.

Explainer: What if there's a national tie?

The result was unexpected, said town clerk Dick Erwin. The town has two registered Democrats, three Republicans and five independents.
"Considering the way things are polling around the country, we may have been the first tie of the day," said town clerk Dick Erwin, noting the national polls showing a virtual dead heat in the race. "Keep your eyes on the news reports, because it's going to be a wild ride."

The town, home to about a dozen residents, has drawn national media attention for being the first place in the country to make its presidential preferences known.

Unlike some parts of the country, election officials never have to worry about lack of interest.  Dixville Notch has had 100% voter turnout since it started its first-in-the-nation voting tradition.

Under New Hampshire voting law, a poling place can be closed once all registered voters have officially cast their ballots.  With all 10 registered voters on hand, the community had its tally shortly after midnight.

However, since 1996, another small New Hampshire town - Hart's Location - reinstated its practice from the 1940s and also began opening its polls at midnight.

The result there? Obama 23; Romney 9

The result in Dixville Notch is hardly a reliable bellwether for the eventual winner of the White House - or even the result statewide.

Although the community typically leans Republican, residents went for Obama in 2008 - the first time the majority of folks in Dixville Notch went for a Democrat in 40 years.

what a small mind you have; a vote for Obo is a vote to kill America; Plain and simple folks, Obo is a global socialist and those are the policies he has put forth. If Obocare is implemented the middle class will pay big time for it. Obo hates America and her people. No doubt about that.

Uh, Toby? Romney managed to insult the poorer 47% of the population (regardless as to party affiliation), along with women, gays, Latinos, and educated people.

Oh yeah. Romney totally relates to the American populous.

Man Romney can't even give details about this 5pt plan he is bragging about. There is no way I am voting for a guy that can't even give a lick of details about that.

  5. Capitalism, not Socialism.

People ask why I'm voting for Romney. This is capitalism, people. Not socialism. America does not run off of government assistance. The less government interference, the better. That's how America works. Romney says it's not about giving people hand outs, its about helping them out so they DON'T need hand outs.

This just in; Obama is winning the early election, but just wait until the republicans get off work 😉

know what trickle-down economics is?... It's when you get laid off from you restaurant or hardware store or construction job because I and all my higher paid office coworkers got laid off and we don't spend money at your business anymore... The sequester is going to be a giant economic collapse, we're all going to get laid off and then so will you... then you'll firmly "believe" in trickle-down... I think Romney really can end the gridlock, I really don't think Obama is capable. He should have been happy with his Obamacare, hel l, the healthcare system is messed up anyway, Obamacare can't make it much worse than it was going to be anyway, it's not a fix, but it's not much of a change. But he should have been happy with that and learned something from the last perve-in-chief, Clinton, and started compromising, and listening to ADULTS when it comes to foreign policy (Hilary as Sec of State? really?)...

As Americans, we all need to take a step back from the negative statements. We may all be different, but we're all Americans. Don't let this election tear the very fabric of our freedoms.

Romney is atill in action! This is the spirit this nation is lacking right now. He does not want
to sit in a hotel whole day just to watch the result. He wants action!
    Wake
up, this is the time for all Americans to wake up! Our children have
16 Trillion debts now. In 2008, Obama promised to cut the debts
(9Trillion then) into half. Not only he did not reduce a penny, but
also he added 6 Trillion more instead. Another 4 years, it will grow to
    22 Trillion!
Romney is not my best choice, but Obama has no
solution other than borrowing money from our children. If you love this
nation, if you love your children, do not vote for Obama. Romney is a
better choice to solve our nation's top problems.

As a Missourian, I'm proud to vote against Todd Akin and his out of touch views. Claire McCaskill will be returning to Washington D.C. representing the interests of the great state of Missouri.
