A tie for Obama and Romney in nation's first results

The first presidential election results are in - and it's a tie.

President Barack Obama and his Republican rival, Mitt Romney, each received five votes in Dixville Notch, New Hampshire.

The town in the state's northeast corner has opened its polls shortly after midnight each election day since 1960 - but today's tie was the first in its history.

Explainer: What if there's a national tie?

The result was unexpected, said town clerk Dick Erwin. The town has two registered Democrats, three Republicans and five independents.
"Considering the way things are polling around the country, we may have been the first tie of the day," said town clerk Dick Erwin, noting the national polls showing a virtual dead heat in the race. "Keep your eyes on the news reports, because it's going to be a wild ride."

The town, home to about a dozen residents, has drawn national media attention for being the first place in the country to make its presidential preferences known.

Unlike some parts of the country, election officials never have to worry about lack of interest.  Dixville Notch has had 100% voter turnout since it started its first-in-the-nation voting tradition.

Under New Hampshire voting law, a poling place can be closed once all registered voters have officially cast their ballots.  With all 10 registered voters on hand, the community had its tally shortly after midnight.

However, since 1996, another small New Hampshire town - Hart's Location - reinstated its practice from the 1940s and also began opening its polls at midnight.

The result there? Obama 23; Romney 9

The result in Dixville Notch is hardly a reliable bellwether for the eventual winner of the White House - or even the result statewide.

Although the community typically leans Republican, residents went for Obama in 2008 - the first time the majority of folks in Dixville Notch went for a Democrat in 40 years.

The U.S. is going to be more divided than ever in it's history. other than of course the civil war period. Something crazy is happening here. I am Canadian and I have always liked the U.S., but lately things have been quite whacked right out.

Isn't it kind of weird to count and publicize results anywhere when there's a full day of voting ahead? Publicizing results could affect how people vote elsewhere.

I'd be willing to be that the publicizing of how 10 people voted is not going to influence anyone. Come on people! This is just a little "election day interest" story. Quit getting so bent out of shape!

USN Ret. Thanks for your service. Some of the rest of you are shameful. Regardless of how you voted, and who wins, we are all Americans and it is going to take all of us to get this country on the move again. Yes, that means talking respectfully to each other. Yes, that means you are not going to get exactly what you want. Yes, that means compromise. Start acting like responsible adults instead of angry spoiled children. If you don't, this country really is doomed.

What really needs to happen is change the presidents term to a one time 6 year term, then have two new candidates argue for the position. Then if the current president wants to run for a second term it'll be after six years. This keeps the whole "we're gonna fight tooth and nail to make sure president is one termer' and also makes it so you have two new choices to choose from. This also helps the current president do his job instead of campaining for a year out of the term. I would think most people know that turning an economy around after four years is a lot to ask, maybe six would allow a bit more progress. Am I illogical in my thinking?

While we're at it. Term limits for congress would be a great idea as well. At least the will get worthless politicians like Boehner and Pelosi out in 4 years.

I'm praying for a clear landslide win for The President and for an entirely new house and senate so that the republicans will see that we didn't fall for the lies and deception.

It's only about race because people like you insist that it is. The majority of the people in the world today concentrate on other stuff like you know politics and policies.

I sure hope that Romney wins. Many relatives of mine voted for B.O. because he said he was going to cut the deficit in half and stop the crazy George Bush spending. Someone needed to. Unfortunately, he DOUBLED our deficit and did not make good on that very important promise. I don't hate the guy, but cannot support someone who is a wild spender. Romney/Ryan have promised to cut spending. I have to give them chance, since if Obama keeps going the same for 4 years, we are doomed.
