The first presidential election results are in - and it's a tie.
President Barack Obama and his Republican rival, Mitt Romney, each received five votes in Dixville Notch, New Hampshire.
The town in the state's northeast corner has opened its polls shortly after midnight each election day since 1960 - but today's tie was the first in its history.
Explainer: What if there's a national tie?
The result was unexpected, said town clerk Dick Erwin. The town has two registered Democrats, three Republicans and five independents.
"Considering the way things are polling around the country, we may have been the first tie of the day," said town clerk Dick Erwin, noting the national polls showing a virtual dead heat in the race. "Keep your eyes on the news reports, because it's going to be a wild ride."
The town, home to about a dozen residents, has drawn national media attention for being the first place in the country to make its presidential preferences known.
Unlike some parts of the country, election officials never have to worry about lack of interest. Dixville Notch has had 100% voter turnout since it started its first-in-the-nation voting tradition.
Under New Hampshire voting law, a poling place can be closed once all registered voters have officially cast their ballots. With all 10 registered voters on hand, the community had its tally shortly after midnight.
However, since 1996, another small New Hampshire town - Hart's Location - reinstated its practice from the 1940s and also began opening its polls at midnight.
The result there? Obama 23; Romney 9
The result in Dixville Notch is hardly a reliable bellwether for the eventual winner of the White House - or even the result statewide.
Although the community typically leans Republican, residents went for Obama in 2008 - the first time the majority of folks in Dixville Notch went for a Democrat in 40 years.

The world is watching
what a joke
This is the first open fraud election in US History as Mitt knew he could not win an honest election. Each Republican Governor is doing their best to assure only Republican ballots are counted. Poll workers are commiting fraud and destorying ballots. The USA once known for it leadership and example to the World is now seen for it's open corrupted election by the fake Republican/Tea Party. The Mafia would be proud of the Romney/Ryan Team and their supporters. Just think Texas will arrest International Monitors and the next US President will not be accepted. I remember President Bush taking the World Stage to demand Palestine have fair/free elections and Bush demanded International Monitors got to assure the citizens rights. Well now Mitt the lying bully has shown he is a cheat/liar and will steal what he wants as he is training Paul Ryan to do the same.
I think your foil hat is on a little too tight...
Oh Jackie....you really believe that pollsters are destroying votes? Have you BEEN to a voting poll? Or that is just your way of dealing with it if Obama doesn't win. If Romney wins we are going to have to listen to whining for years. People just can't accept that MAYBE someone doesn't want Obama back in.....and don't throw race in there either. Stop supporting someone that says college education needs to be top priority. There are millions out of work...some with double degrees...you have kids coming out of college to NO JOBS! If Romney wins...the left will whine...sue and blame. Blame game time is over...pull up your pants and deal with it!
I think your aluminum foil hat is on a little too tight...
I'm glad I invest in Alcoa. I bet you alone add a penny to EPS.
bet it was staged for the coverage.
The funniest part of my day was watching the guy at the gas station rail about how he couldn't vote for Romney because he was still on probation. Now the bald head, skinhead tats and Obama count down clock make sense. The funny part is the GOP authored the bill that kept him from voting in my state. PRICELESS!!!
Just in....
Hundreds of thousands of Robo-calls have been sent out in Florida by supervisors of elections telling people they have until Wednesday to vote.
Investigation is underway.

I wish voters really understood where change happens. It's not the president. It's congress.
Congress has no term limits. If we all want to move FORWARD then we should be demanding congressional term limits. 2 terms for HoR and 1 for Senate. If our reps and senators don't pass that then vote them out no matter the party affiliation. First to go. Boehner and Pelosi. We need to rid washington of the blood sucking leaches on both sides of the aisle.
Next let's get a new party that represents moderates. No matter the party line we all agree on 90% of the things that really mater. The sooner we all realize that the sooner we start working toward a common goal and the country move FORWARD.
"Poling"?
Maybe that's because they know we're electing a President not a pastor. Try to stay focused on the real issues.
No one with 1/2 a brain wants religion and politics discussed in the same breath. I voted Republican and wish I had a party that took religion out of its platform but yet had fiscally conservative ideas.
You'll be sorry if you vote for a Mormon - Joseph Smith's prophecy includes taking over the US government - if you vote for Romney, you're crazy as he is!
Nothing will ever change in this country if we only keep a president for two terms max. Things dont change over night and sure as hell won't in eight years. Its a process we must do what our founding fathers did.
I can't wait to watch a beer commercial during my sporting events. I miss commercials that are based on my desires and needs.
That is truely american.
Good luck Obama ....
If you think our elections are an unfair mess, you should see the NBA's referees.
Hear, hear! Unfortunately the question really comes down to how many viable candidates are there. Everyone should vote with their heart and mind but, when it comes down to it, it's either Romney or Obama as the most viable candidates in a convoluted system.
