The first presidential election results are in - and it's a tie.
President Barack Obama and his Republican rival, Mitt Romney, each received five votes in Dixville Notch, New Hampshire.
The town in the state's northeast corner has opened its polls shortly after midnight each election day since 1960 - but today's tie was the first in its history.
Explainer: What if there's a national tie?
The result was unexpected, said town clerk Dick Erwin. The town has two registered Democrats, three Republicans and five independents.
"Considering the way things are polling around the country, we may have been the first tie of the day," said town clerk Dick Erwin, noting the national polls showing a virtual dead heat in the race. "Keep your eyes on the news reports, because it's going to be a wild ride."
The town, home to about a dozen residents, has drawn national media attention for being the first place in the country to make its presidential preferences known.
Unlike some parts of the country, election officials never have to worry about lack of interest. Â Dixville Notch has had 100% voter turnout since it started its first-in-the-nation voting tradition.
Under New Hampshire voting law, a poling place can be closed once all registered voters have officially cast their ballots. Â With all 10 registered voters on hand, the community had its tally shortly after midnight.
However, since 1996, another small New Hampshire town - Hart's Location - reinstated its practice from the 1940s and also began opening its polls at midnight.
The result there? Obama 23; Romney 9
The result in Dixville Notch is hardly a reliable bellwether for the eventual winner of the White House - or even the result statewide.
Although the community typically leans Republican, residents went for Obama in 2008 - the first time the majority of folks in Dixville Notch went for a Democrat in 40 years.

gee. romney claims to be a job creator yet he puts his money in swiss bank accounts and the cayman islands. odd huh.
Those two things don't go together at all. It's like saying Obama says he's the champion for the middle class yet he won't release and of his college records.
Finkl, Please stop going off script.
Tax Returns, please Mr. Romney. That at least makes sense. Be prepared to amend them Wednesday!
You don't get to be the editor of Harvard Law Review with mediocre(sp) grades! So Mr. Obama was there legally as a US citizen! Check their on-line card catalog, Obama is listed, I found no other alias.
If you had worded your entire life and were a successful business man, woudl you take your hard EARNED MONEY and put it in a small bank with 0.7% interest? Or, since it's YOUR money, would you seek out the best way to get a bette return? Don't fault Mitt for being successful and doing the right things with his earned income.
I suppose that you do wha tyou want with YOUR earned income. Why shoudl MItt have less right to enjoy the fruits of his labor than you do. I think you are being a hypocrite becuase Mitt has been more successful with his money than you have wiht yours.
IN other words, you are envious of Mitt and it makes you angry when someone has outperformed you.
Well, to clean up this economy and fix what Obama has done to us all, we NEED someone that can outperform. And that person is MItt ROmney. Obama never has outperformed anyone in any way that make a difference. He is just a touchy, feeling, hope king of guy. He is like the guy with his last $10 and he throws it on the craps table with the extremely high HOPES that somehow, the chips will land on black and he will win.
Obama won't be gambling with our country's enconmy like that. Romney is not hopeful he can fix the USA, he is CONFIDENT that he can. If you really care about the country and your family, you must vote Romney today!!
He failed at hsi 4 year attempt to make things better and now he needs to be fired and let the real professionals fix it.
Goodbye Mr present.
Thank for your service. Let see what president elect can do.
Was super-storm Sandy too subtle?
Now knock this Romney business out before I order everyone out of the pool.
Hope you're stocked up on tissues Chris!!
Bahahahahahahaha!!
Don't you just like the way CNN(communist new network) tries to mislead people. what a group of tools
Hyperbole like yours puts me in the mood for fire and brimstone.
And yet fools like you read CNN. Makes you a Communist too, I suspect, Mr McCarthy. Or is it J Edger Hoover?
Bahahahahahahahahahahaha!!
"Communist News Channel", That's a good one!!
Vote for Jesus..! Shut-up and eat more chickhen.. Roll-tide..! Go Memphis Grizzlies..! Big ups! To the trailer trash.. I`ll see you when I see you.. Peace out..!
Romney wins if Obama losts
ha ha CNN reporting a tie...god forbid CNN endorses somebody..CNN poll tie, first voting tie..who gets in the WH..l both ??
Since Dixville Notch AND Hart's Location both voted at midnight, seems the tallies from should be considered together when compiling the results. So the headline should have read: "A big win for President Obama in nation's first results."
Gary Johnson got 2 votes in Hart. Almost 6% 🙂
garbage journalism
Haha
I hope mitt win
I'm not voting four more years of a ballooning federal government. I'm not voting ever growing energy costs. I'm not voting our Dr.'s into retirement and other professions. I'm not voting for four more years of hopeless change and empty promises. I'm voting freedom not tyranny.
So, you are not voting. It doesn't matter who wins as president, they are just mouthpieces. your congressional representatives are the ones that make the spending choices. The candidates make speeches, promises, blow a lot of hot air. Congress ultimately decides where the money goes. Pay attention to who you are voting into the House and Senate. The presidential campaign is a sideshow to make you NOT think about those "inconsequential" offices.
So, you're voting for Obama then? Great! 'Cos I agree! The last thing we need is a Dubya2.0!!
Thanks for your support!!
D¡cksville Cro†ch... nicely done 0:–)
Thanks for manipulating the election CNN. Keeping other candidates out of the media. I wonder if "corperations" will run for president next year (since they are legaly people now) and you will only promote them.....
Contrary to popular belief of contradicting lies, Obama is neither Muslim or in Rev Wright Church; However Romney is currently a Mormon, and they deny Jesus Christ divinity, and they mean to deny his authority. If you are Christian and you vote for Romney, You are justifying the doctrine of a cult.
If you had worded your entire life and were a successful business man, would you take YOUR hard EARNED MONEY and put it in a small bank with 0.7% interest? Just give up Obama, you are out of your league!
