A tie for Obama and Romney in nation's first results

The first presidential election results are in - and it's a tie.

President Barack Obama and his Republican rival, Mitt Romney, each received five votes in Dixville Notch, New Hampshire.

The town in the state's northeast corner has opened its polls shortly after midnight each election day since 1960 - but today's tie was the first in its history.

Explainer: What if there's a national tie?

The result was unexpected, said town clerk Dick Erwin. The town has two registered Democrats, three Republicans and five independents.
"Considering the way things are polling around the country, we may have been the first tie of the day," said town clerk Dick Erwin, noting the national polls showing a virtual dead heat in the race. "Keep your eyes on the news reports, because it's going to be a wild ride."

The town, home to about a dozen residents, has drawn national media attention for being the first place in the country to make its presidential preferences known.

Unlike some parts of the country, election officials never have to worry about lack of interest.  Dixville Notch has had 100% voter turnout since it started its first-in-the-nation voting tradition.

Under New Hampshire voting law, a poling place can be closed once all registered voters have officially cast their ballots.  With all 10 registered voters on hand, the community had its tally shortly after midnight.

However, since 1996, another small New Hampshire town - Hart's Location - reinstated its practice from the 1940s and also began opening its polls at midnight.

The result there? Obama 23; Romney 9

The result in Dixville Notch is hardly a reliable bellwether for the eventual winner of the White House - or even the result statewide.

Although the community typically leans Republican, residents went for Obama in 2008 - the first time the majority of folks in Dixville Notch went for a Democrat in 40 years.

Oh crap. CNN changed their entire page to this election crap. Don't get me wrong, it's important for the country (voting) but seriously? Take away everything else on this place completely for today when you click on the main page.

    Stupid comes to mind.

My apologies. I missed a word. "CNN changed most of their entire page..."

Sorry, I was just overwhelmed at almost 5 am in the morning from the sudden page layout change. 🙂

    Hart's Location , wasn't a tie. OBAMA 23 , ROMNEY 9 So add the two results together , OBAMA 28 , ROMNEY 14 , so far in , N.H. You wouldn't know that from the headline.

I said the same. So the headline should have read: "A big win for President Obama in nation's first results" In NH Dixville Notch AND Hart's Location both voted at midnight and the results bode well for the President's re-election. NH first in the nation results: Obama 28, Romney 14

The headline literally reads "A tie for Obama and Romney in nation's first voting." The key here is the word "first." If Hart's Location and Dixville Notch both opened at midnight, it's probable that Dixville Notch had their results first, as they have a smaller population that Hart's Location by about 2/3. Thus, in the first contest of election day, the result was a tie and the headline is not misleading.

Typical low intelligence of Obamanation supporters. The smaller town was 1st you moron which is what the headline CLEARLY refers to.. Read into it what you want it to say, just like the lying crap that comes out of Obamanations mouth!

People are missing the point: Dixville Notch went for Obama in 2008 and this year it's a tie – not good news for Obama.

They talk about two towns, the tied one they don't give 2008 numbers on. The 23-9 is the one that went for Obama in 2008. Reading comprehension, it's good for you!

Please keep in mind that the presidential election is a sideshow to divert your attention away from whomever is running for the House or Senate in your area. Those are the candidates you need to pay attention to, they make all the spending decisions. The President is just a mouthpiece, very little power to fulfill the promises made on the campaign trail. Your Congressional rep are the ones that make the difference.

Or in the case of the GOP reps, they don't make any difference, because they say No to everything. No compromise is not the way to represent anyone.

That was true until our present president, Obama has skirted around the fringes and done many things without approval of either the House or Senate by excutive order when members are on recess. Most of his appointments were made that way amoung other laws.

No, the truth has revealed they weren't lying. Just wasn't to forthcoming because it was a clandestine mission involved. The republicans know that, thats why they are using the "they are hiding or covering something up" approach, cause they know something's cannot be said. Their using non-disclosure against them!
