Deadly workplace shooting in California

Editor's note: An employee of Apple Valley Farms in Fresno, California, opened fire on his co-workers Tuesday, killing two and wounding two others before fatally shooting himself, police said.

[Updated 6:06 p.m.] Police say the gunman and a second victim have died.

[Updated 2:03 p.m.] The business identified by authorities as Apple Valley Farms apparently goes by the name Valley Proteins.  Calling a phone number listed on a website as being for Apple Valley Farms led CNN to a voicemail for Valley Proteins, which said there was an emergency and that the business was closed for the day. Police also mentioned that some of the reports they received about the shooting used the name Valley Proteins.

On its website, Valley Proteins says it develops animal and pet food ingredients.

[Updated 1:35 p.m.] The alleged gunman was found outside with a gunshot wound to the head, police said.  The victim in serious condition was a 32-year-old woman found outside with a gunshot wound in the lower back.

The two victims in critical condition were found inside the business.  One, a 34-year-old man, appeared to have a gunshot wound to the head; the other, a 28-year-old man, had been shot in the neck, police said.

A 32-year-old man with a gunshot wound to the head was pronounced dead at the scene.

Alleged gunman Lawrence Jones had worked at Apple Valley Farms for 14 months, police said.  According to a co-worker, when Jones came to work this morning "he did not appear to be himself," Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer said.  About 3 1/2 hours later, he pulled out a handgun and opened fire, shooting four people, police said.

Authorities don't know what may have provoked the attack.

As many as 30 workers were inside the business at the time, police said.

Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno told CNN it received four patients from Apple Valley Farms.

[Posted 1:23 p.m.] An employee of Apple Valley Farms in Fresno, California, opened fire on fellow employees Tuesday, killing one and wounding three others before shooting himself, police said.

Two victims are in critical condition; one is in serious condition and expected to survive, Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer said.

The alleged gunman, 42-year-old Lawrence Jones, is in critical condition, police said.

Jones has an extensive criminal history, authorities said.

This absolutely sucks... Workplace violence on rise... and with a dead shooter... This is going to continue the push for everyone living in jail cells. I hope that the criminal psychologists can crack this case correctly and find the motive. And rule out what isn't true.

After having the horrible experience of having to put an end to a life, no matter that it was during war..it's hard to grasp how anyone could just walk up to defenceless people and shoot them. No soul.

I want to send my love to all the workers who witnessed this shooting, as well the victims families. I work in the building across from the empire state building where there was a horrible shooting a few months ago. It was a traumatic experience to witness this kind of workplace violence and I just want them to know that there are people out there who are empathetic. Im sorry you had to experience this. I am truly sending my love to all.

They are like infestation of roaches that you just can not get ridge of, you try everything but they multiply. I wish they all go back to Mexico.

Another case of crimes by minorities who have no business in the usa. We must learn that what this country needs is a system of mass arrests, mass trials, and sonderbehabtelung {Special handling}Where the problem can be solved quickly. We Germans solved our problems quickly during the 12 years of the movement. Aufwiedersehen bis spater.

Terrible! Dude had a job...I use to work until a new company abbacus got the contract and had a policy to kick me out of my minimum wage job! Article said jones had extensive criminal back ground record! Like I poed and said on face book one doesn't know any more...ted bundy was a lawyer, johnwayne casey was construction worker that offered jobs to the nearby teens in his neighborhood, jim Jones was a preacher, Robert pickleton was a farmer who killed 49 women! The list goes on and know one knows what a person is capable of doing...I hate walking around the hood at times!

Another mass shooting targeting Hispanics in California? What the h3ll is going on in that state? Maybe California needs to keep the dangerous criminals in jail where they belong. My most sincere sympathy for the victims & their families.
