Israel returns fire into Syria in warning over spillover violence

[Update 10:22 a.m.] Today's firing of warning shots into Syria - in response to apparent spillover violence from the internal conflict in Syria - marks the first time since 1973 that Israel has fired into Syria across the Golan Heights.  After the Yom Kippur War, an international agreement was established between Syria and the Israel, mandated by the United Nations, establishing a demilitarized zone in the region.

Israel's move today came after the fourth time in ten days that the Syrian conflict spilled over into Israel, the Israeli military said.

The complaint Israel filed with the United Nations is the third in the past 10 days.

Syrian tanks entered the Golan Heights demilitarized zone last week and fired into Syria; bullets fired at the tanks in response struck an Israeli military vehicle in part of the Golan Heights that Israel claims as its own. Mortars also fell in part of the Golan that Israel considers its territory.  No one was injured, the Israeli military said.

"“We interpret it as pinpoint leaks into Israel territory," said Avital Leibovich, spokeswoman for the Israeli military.  "It’s totally internal conflict in Syria. We believe that Israel is not the target here. We are looking at either stray bullets or stray mortars."

[Posted 8:05 a.m.] Israel fired warning shots toward Syria today after a mortar shell hit an Israeli military post, the Israel Defense Forces said.

The shell hit an IDF post in the Golan Heights adjacent to the Israel-Syria border, "as part of the internal conflict inside Syria," the IDF said in a statement.  "No damage or injuries have been reported."

Israel has filed a complaint through U.N. forces operating in the area, "stating that fire emanating from Syria into Israel will not be tolerated and shall be responded to with severity," the IDF said.

Your comment truly reflects pure ignorance and racism. you'll believe anything you read in American media outlets...take a peek at European media for insight on what Israel is actually up to in that region and you will quickly understand how the other side of the truth.
sadly, people like you are allowed to vote.

Most west bank settlers are American Jews settling the west bank in the name of Israel. Americans. US Citizens. Extremists are no good no matter what side of the map they fall on. I am a secular American Jew with plenty of family inside the state of Israel. Its time for moderates of all races, colors, religions to stand up for our beliefs and turn away the extremists within our own communities. Revoke the US citizenship of any American inciting war on behalf of another country.

Ok, Israel is at it again. A bully state, killing without mercy on a daily basis. In Gaza they are treating same way to poor Palestinians as did Hitler to poor Jews in Europe. I am not a racist person or anything but truth is truth!

Oh yes... Israel is at it again... protecting herself against attacks from her neighbors. How cruel... how heartless...

What? No backlash from the US on this?

Of course not. Israel is free to do whatever they want. After all, they're just the poor Jews on the block.

Watch out US. You are the servants of the Jewish Empire.

All you have to do is listen to the predidential debate. Israel was mentioned 32 times and it was a race who can suck up more to israel. For israel, American lives are cheap since they're not the "chosen people"

  10. Who's to blame here?

"Israel fires shots into Syria" screams the biased, provocative headline on the front page. Not a word about Israel being attacked first by mortar fire until you've clicked to see the article.

... and if you don't click you race away to the next article with the certainty that evil old Israel has once again bullied and attacked her dear innocent neighbors for no reason at all.

Why didn't the front page headline read "Mortar shot hits Israeli military post" since that's what provoked the incident? ... a rhetorical question as we all know the reason for that.

Easy there chap. Do not mix whole matter with cheap sensationalism.

...These people are killers and they have an apartheid'd state. Find some facts with open mind (that if you want to reason)

By definition, an apartheid state is one that discriminates against some of its citizens on the basis of race. It is a fact that Israel gives all races and religions equal rights.

Whatever you may think of Israel and its actions, it is a fact that Israel is NOT an apartheid state.

The hubris by damn near every respondents that all arabic peoples and their lands and resources are no more than pawns for outside mainly eurocentrics needs is quite evident.
No questions on why so many euro centrics were in someone elses lands.
No questioning that the responce to a nationalistic cause was met by a brutality that has no place in a civilized world. Was it the brutality that is giving vicarious pleasure to some, for they show no higher cause than the act itself.
Even the pacifist US and they are a very small minority of Reformed Judaism, still treat the Arabic especially those in or near israeli borders as children. Wards of an Israeli state not as sentient human beings capable of making own lifes decisions.

children thinking they are playing with fireworks bombard israel every day with lethal rockets. children need to be treated like children by their parents and their teachers but when the parents and teachers ignore their responsibilities they should not be crying foul when the victims of their children respond. all we ever hear is the crying and breast beating accompanying the tired mantra: "woe is me, woe is me, everyone but us is responsible for our misery"

    • Cannuck nailed it. The US and its allies are in the middle east to support empire–nothing more. Freedom and democracy? Sure sure. They are perfectly willing to keep dictators in power, as long as they do their bidding.

The Americans should study history. What brings down empires? Hubris, mainly. A failure to recognize that their actions a detrimental to their survival.
