Israel returns fire into Syria in warning over spillover violence

[Update 10:22 a.m.] Today's firing of warning shots into Syria - in response to apparent spillover violence from the internal conflict in Syria - marks the first time since 1973 that Israel has fired into Syria across the Golan Heights.  After the Yom Kippur War, an international agreement was established between Syria and the Israel, mandated by the United Nations, establishing a demilitarized zone in the region.

Israel's move today came after the fourth time in ten days that the Syrian conflict spilled over into Israel, the Israeli military said.

The complaint Israel filed with the United Nations is the third in the past 10 days.

Syrian tanks entered the Golan Heights demilitarized zone last week and fired into Syria; bullets fired at the tanks in response struck an Israeli military vehicle in part of the Golan Heights that Israel claims as its own. Mortars also fell in part of the Golan that Israel considers its territory.  No one was injured, the Israeli military said.

"“We interpret it as pinpoint leaks into Israel territory," said Avital Leibovich, spokeswoman for the Israeli military.  "It’s totally internal conflict in Syria. We believe that Israel is not the target here. We are looking at either stray bullets or stray mortars."

[Posted 8:05 a.m.] Israel fired warning shots toward Syria today after a mortar shell hit an Israeli military post, the Israel Defense Forces said.

The shell hit an IDF post in the Golan Heights adjacent to the Israel-Syria border, "as part of the internal conflict inside Syria," the IDF said in a statement.  "No damage or injuries have been reported."

Israel has filed a complaint through U.N. forces operating in the area, "stating that fire emanating from Syria into Israel will not be tolerated and shall be responded to with severity," the IDF said.

If somebody launched mortar fire at your house, you'd do nothing. You'd get together with your little pothead friends and say..."oh looky firin on us..We need to take em to court".

If there was no oil in the Middle East there wouldn't be wars or threat of wars. If you think about it, there are worst humanity issues in other parts of the World than in the Middle East so all this propaganda about the abuse by Middle eastern leaders upon their people just helps give cause for war to control the oil. Israel is swept into this terrible mess because they are trying to protect Israel, I don't see Israel as an agressor and that's why the U.S. will always defend Israel, make no mistake about that.

So the business between Israel and the Arabs was about oil? Was the business between Iran and Iraq about oil? Shall I go on? Don't be such a simpleton.

only when Israel initiates unprovoked attacks on its neighbors can israel be compared to gaza, syria, west bank, and every other arab state that has attacked israel in the past 60+ years so it appears the only karma at work is the karma that resulted in your misplacing the half of the wit you are missing.

No Claudia your wrong. There is plenty of oil, but anything related to "green" energy IS a farce. In the last trip to the middle east your potus and your savior, totally by passed Isreal in an effort to appologize to terrorists and sympathized with them. The voters made thier bed, and now they should lay in it.

I hope Israel will respond with great force, the same way America would respond when a neighbor fires into their sovereign territory and ignore the world when they condemn Israel for so called "disproportionate response".

Yes, it's frightening that another conflict could begin. That being said, I think Israel's action (in THIS scenario) was justified. If this warning shot was unprovoked, I wouldn't be justifying the actions of Israel, but a mortar shell landed on the army base. They didn't respond with a rocket or an airstirke, It was a warning shot.
I realize that this is cliché, but if the same thing happened to a US base, we'd respond even more swiftly and violently.

"Israeli tanks enter a demilitarized zone and fire shells into Syria and in response bullets are fired from the Syrian side".
"Israeli tanks fire shells into Gaza killing Palestinians".
    for Gazans its routine.
The Syrian situation is as what those who created the Syrian implosion wanted it. Israel/Saudi/ US push to get rid of the pro Russia, tilted to Iran regime.

Let's get real about the Middle East (there a re a few here that are).

The US and its allies are there to support their vital interests–in this case energy. The will prop up any despot or dictator in the region as long as the oil keeps flowing. If they see an opportunity to get their hands directly on the resources–as in Iraq–they will.

As for Iran, a country whose actions are COMPLETELY legal within the NPT framework and that all western intelligence agencies have concluded is NOT working to build a weapon and has not made the decision to do so, the reason the west and Israel does not want them to have one is that once they do, they can not push them around any longer. They have done just about everything to persuade Iran to go nuclear in this regard.

      or so you say....

how about your president calling for the total destruction of Israel... how about your president DENYING all the massacre of Jewish during WWII... how about your people (most of them) calling to kill of those who dont share their beliefs, how about all the killings of any one expressing different ideas, how about the oppression you put on the beings who give you life (WOMEN)... how about all the terrorism you support...

Do you think ANYONE in the world is going to believe you...? do you think ANYONE in the world is going to take your word for it...?

You guys are so ignorant you think GOD or ALLAH (who created everything, need YOU to help HIM kill everyone)...

How weak is then your Gor or Allah... have you EVEN think about this... the Creator asking the created to help to destroy what the Creator made....? you probably wont even understand this...

do u even know what you are talking about? First off the U.S. is always getting the short end of the straw especially with Irac, Go and see who has scooped up most of the oil contracts there. It sure as hell ain't the U.S. you may want to look at China for that one. And second of all you say Iran isn't working on a necular weapon according to all intelligence networks but then again in the next sentence you state that America has practically bullied them into developing a nuclear weapon. SO WHICH IS IT ? Either they are or they arent. Make up your mind. I sure hope you are working for another country's intelligence agency because you have no idea what the hell you are talking about!!

If Assad goes it means the fanatics are within striking distance of Israel and will have expanded their sphere of hate mongering and intimidation. Assad may not know any other way to deal with these cretins but, most suredly, they must not prevail.

The Turks should take over Syria and annex it to recreate the Ottoman Empire, straighten out this Civil War, and US, Russia, and China should agree to allow this solution.

This Syrian Muslims Civil War of Muslims against Muslims has nothing to do with any Jews, Buddhists, Christians, or Hindus. This a Muslims Civil War of Muslims by the Muslims, for the Muslims, and of the Muslims. And it requires a solution of Muslims (Turks maybe?) since it is muslims problem of muslims created by Muslims.

    Got it?
