Voice of Elmo quits after underage sex lawsuit filed

[Updated at 1:10 p.m. ET] Kevin Clash, the puppeteer who provides the voice of Elmo on "Sesame Street," resigned Tuesday after a man filed a lawsuit accusing him of conducting an underage sexual relationship.

The lawsuit was filed in a New York court Tuesday, a week after another accuser recanted his claim that Clash, now 52, engaged him in underage sex.

"I am resigning from Sesame Workshop with a very heavy heart," Clash said in a written statement Tuesday. "I have loved every day of my 28 years working for this exceptional organization. Personal matters have diverted attention away from the important work Sesame Street is doing and I cannot allow it to go on any longer. I am deeply sorry to be leaving and am looking forward to resolving these personal matters privately."

Curious as to why this article fails to mention that the first accuser has indicated that he was pressured into taking a monetary settlement that required him to recant his story and that he did indeed have a relationship with Mr. Clash when he was underage. Also, a new lawsuit was filed by a second accuser accusing Mr. Clash, once again, of underage activity, this time with a 15 year old boy. Pretty sure it was this second suit that instigated the resignation.

It's called the age of consent. Some 31 states say it's 16. NY says 17. The difference in age between teen partners is also a factor in some jurisdictions.

What did NPR know and when did they know it? They need to vacate their Emmy's and pay a $60 million fine to young abused teenagers. And they can't participate in any Emmy shows for 4 years!! Joe PA paid the price, now it's NPR's turn!

'Age of consent' doesn't suddenly confer the Ability to dissent.

Kevin, I'm sorry this all came down. People, there is a thing called " innocent until proven guilty". May we extend this to Mr. Clash? He is a wonderfully talented man, and Sesame/Jim Henson's will miss him sorely., as will the children of Sesame Street. I wish Kevin luck, and I hope all comes out well in the end for him.

I doubt Elmo is going anywhere. Mr. CLash has just been his voice for many years, I don't think he was the first Elmo.
