Report: Possible tornado in Birmingham, Alabama

A possible tornado touched down in northern Birmingham, Alabama, early Monday morning, the National Weather Service said on its website.

There are reports of several houses damaged, including houses with roofs torn off, the web site said. Power lines were also down.

Phone calls by CNN to the Birmingham Department of Emergency Management were not immediately returned. There were no initial reports of injuries.

    What?! I live in Birmingham. I work down town. I didn't see or hear anything, it is overcast and drizzzling, hardly any wind. How far north is this supposed to be? Huntsville?

    I'm in western bBirmingham and didn't hear anything about this happening! I know that it is raining but seriously this is crazy! Only rain here but I'm no where near northern Birmingham.

      The weather has been sketchy this November and December. The temperatures this past weekend were hovering around the 70's most of the weekend.

      It IS late, but you can't rule anything out down south... or even up north. I live in N. IL, and we had a tornado in Nov. 2011 and one before that in January 2008 (rated an EF-3 even)

    I don't live far from Birmingham. There's no tornado. Local meteorologists have consistently reported that it's just storms caused by the cold front moving into the area while temperatures remain relatively warm. Again, there is no tornado. The damage in Northern Birmingham was minor and caused by wind from this storm, not a tornado.
