Man stands in mall parking lot, fires 50 shots in the air

A man stood in the parking lot of a shopping mall in Southern California on Saturday and fired 50 shots into the air.

Police didn’t say why, but his actions prompted many stores in the open-air Fashion Island mall in Newport Beach to lock their doors.

No one was hurt by the bullets raining down, but one person suffered minor injuries while trying to flee the area, police said.

Newport Beach Police quickly took the man, 42-year-old Marcos Sarinana Gurrola, into custody, but not before calling in the bomb squad when the man said he had more ammunition in the trunk of his car.

The incident came a day after a mass shooting at an elementary school in Connecticut, and last week’s fatal shooting at a mall in Oregon.

Patrick Wyrick was returning to his car when he heard the shots and, from behind the safety of his car, began capturing the scene with camera.

“I wasn't sure they were real or not. Then a heard another set of shots and then another,” he said in a video he posted on YouTube.

“My wife and daughter were at an ice cream shop in the mall when the shooting happened. They ended up running and screaming with everyone toward the opposite side of the mall.”

Other shoppers began tweeting:

These crazies really need mental evaluation/help. I have to wonder if there wasn't such intense media attention on the shooter in cases like Connecticut, VT, AZ, etc... (not to mention the ease of obtaining a gun) if these folks would not just be acting out in some other less dangerous fashion. People commit suicide all the time, and people languish in despair and insanity all the time. It's really only been since the media has rewarded them with attention that we've got these crazies acting out in public to this degree.

I grewup in eye sight of a major US city. However, the only thing that stood between my family and me were the guns we had in the house. It would take the county sheriff an hour or more to come to your aid. By then the flys would have started to blow you. Believe it or not there is still a vast part of the country still this way.

This is exactly the denial mentality that perpetuates the gun problem in America. Nobody says that gun control will prevent people from killing one another, but the proof that gun control reduces the number of killings is there for all to see in the gun control policies and statistics of responsible governments in other progressive western democracies. If this kill didn't have an automatic weapon, he probably would not have show up to the school. Most of these killers are cowards. If he still had shown up with either a knife, a baseball bat, a fork, a car, a peice of rope, water (REALLY?) he may have murdered a few people but probably would have been overpowered after the first.

Improving our laws on gun control WILL make a difference. It would have with these victims. And yes, the rest of the issues should be addressed but there is no reason to hold back on the most obvious.

Agreed, however, how do we get to zero guns? Bad guys will always find a way to get them, and would not obey laws requiring them to hand them over. If the bad guys still have guns, then the good guys need guns as well. Banning guns in the U.S. would be like banning heroin. No matter how strict the regulations, people will find a way to get them.

Northern Neighbor – that's one serious leap of logic. Actually, there's nothing logical in your statement at all. Your premise that people are only killed with guns is easily disprovable, thereby negating your entire statement. Examples: worse school massacre in US history – not guns. Oklahoma City federal building explosion – not guns. 9/11 – not guns. The list goes on. Statistically insignificant events are not indicative of a systemic problem. Emotionally driven declarations like yours tend to be ill-conceived – something most adults know.
