Man stands in mall parking lot, fires 50 shots in the air

A man stood in the parking lot of a shopping mall in Southern California on Saturday and fired 50 shots into the air.

Police didn’t say why, but his actions prompted many stores in the open-air Fashion Island mall in Newport Beach to lock their doors.

No one was hurt by the bullets raining down, but one person suffered minor injuries while trying to flee the area, police said.

Newport Beach Police quickly took the man, 42-year-old Marcos Sarinana Gurrola, into custody, but not before calling in the bomb squad when the man said he had more ammunition in the trunk of his car.

The incident came a day after a mass shooting at an elementary school in Connecticut, and last week’s fatal shooting at a mall in Oregon.

Patrick Wyrick was returning to his car when he heard the shots and, from behind the safety of his car, began capturing the scene with camera.

“I wasn't sure they were real or not. Then a heard another set of shots and then another,” he said in a video he posted on YouTube.

“My wife and daughter were at an ice cream shop in the mall when the shooting happened. They ended up running and screaming with everyone toward the opposite side of the mall.”

Other shoppers began tweeting:

Dear Americans..get yourselves a real life.Welcome to the new world. I would explain that further but most of the comments I see here are from people with IQ's around my age.I've had a change of heart about one issue at least.Explaining. Pot is already "legal" everywhere since it's available everywhere if you know where to look just like alcohol was after the Volstead Act.And the result is the same ....criminals take over the supply chain and lots of people die. It's ok to buy an AK 47 but not ok to grow pot. I don't smoke it because it makes me go to sleep. Your country is destined for ruin and the fault will lie with the American people. Not the normal Joes that work hard every day to try and provide for their families but the people that continually elect politicians that don't have the balls to stand up against the real controllers of your country or mine. The money guys.If only I could be King of The World. Things would change. Bill Gates and myself could have the same things even if I was just a street sweeper. Once upon a time I was a foreman on a job and I overheard an electrician say to the job superintendent ...He's just a laborer. The superintendent freaked out. He said to the electrician...don't ever say that to me again. Every man on this job is just as important as every other man from the guys that sweep the floor right up to me ...the top guy. That has always stuck in my head because it's about the truest statement I've ever heard.

Why would I want a job cleaning streets when I can just sit on my butt and do nothing but have the same things as Bill Gates. Why would I want to work hard for the same things someone who does hardly nothing gets. That is why it won't work. As for the shooting, maybe he thinks the same as you. If he gets arrested he will be taken care of for minimal effort. Why work hard when the prison system feeds, dresses and houses you.

Check your facts. The Bath School bombing killed 38 children. Their where no guns involved. This occured in 1927.

Our Lady of Angels in Chicago where the children all died in a fire because the weapon used there was chains across fire escape doors so the kids would be safe .

you are wrong- May 18, 1927 : In the deadliest mass school murder in United States history, former school board member Andrew Kehoe set off three bombs in Bath Township, Michigan killing 45 people and wounding 58. Kehoe killed himself and the superintendent by blowing up his own vehicle.

Wish people would stop throwing the Bath School Boming out there as a rebuttal. Dynamite, bombs and explosives are regulated. So are knives (grab a machete and walk downtown sometime – see what happens).

      BitWraith,

Guns are also regulated. More so than most common explosive ingredients or knives, actually. If anything, your point argues against you.

Just remember that 99.9% of the times that guns re used to kill in United States are American CITIZENS.

There are more illegal immigrants killed and abused than illegal immigrants that kill or abuse.

So the problem is definitely not the illegal immigrants but it is what the American culture is becoming.

So with the guy who killed another man with a hammer.....should we regulate tools? If you haven't read the article, look it up. CNN isn't covering it.

hammers don't kill 30 people in 3 minutes. It's common sense.stop trying to defend use of guns you jerk.

OMAR- I'm not trying to defend guns. I'm saying, no matter how you try to regulate something, people will still kill people. Guns didn't kill the thousands of people in the world trade center did they? or am I wrong to say 30 children died in 1927 with no guns involved. Let's regulate koolaide, so we don't have another Jim Jones. This isn't about guns. It's about people.

You can’t reason with people like Omar. He is thinking with his emotions. It’s the same mentality that creates lynch mobs.

Same goes for regulating marijuana. Make it illegal and only criminals with guns
      control it.

If it's just as easy to kill people without guns, how come people almost always use guns? I bet it's probably because of some sort of advantage the gun provides.

No one is trying to take guns away from sane people... How about we talk about what is causing this outbreak of violence and how we can prevent it rather than pushing your own (either side of the gun control debate) political platform.

The real issue at hand is mental health. We need to stop allowing crazies lose on the streets and figure out a way to detect these incidents from happening prior. Stricter gun control isn't the answer, it's just a band-aid on a large, open wound.

It looks like we need to start giving all kids guns when they start kindergarten. They could have them their whole lives and help propagate the American dream of owning and carrying guns everywhere! Two dayas before the school shooting, Michigan passed a law stating people with carry certificates can now carry them to Daycare!! That's where I've always felt the most threatened!

The person was attempting to show people how unreasonably scared they are being about the whole "shootings" thing. The media drives it into peoples heads that this can and will happen to them. Maybe he was just making a statement.

Regardless of what any of us think, something will be done. Either we will have a harder time getting guns (the honest people) or they will ban all guns but the schmuck who has no good intention in mind will still be able to get one. Just remember, once your right to defend yourself is gone, soon your right to free speech will be gone, your right to smoke your joint, the right to post on a blog. Enjoy the revamping of a free country. Enjoy busting your butt to support your family while some jerk like omar does nothing but earns the same as you. Welcome to the new sociolist republic of America where no one is allowed to be better than anyone else. YAY.

I disagree. I don't think anything will be done. We had the same conversations after Aurora and Columbine, and nothing changed. Your leaders in Washington can't agree on what to have for dinner, much less actual policy. And gun control is something that's too partisan to even bring up, especially when most of our politicians are more concerned with climbing the political ladder than they are with our welfare as a society.
