Man stands in mall parking lot, fires 50 shots in the air

A man stood in the parking lot of a shopping mall in Southern California on Saturday and fired 50 shots into the air.

Police didn’t say why, but his actions prompted many stores in the open-air Fashion Island mall in Newport Beach to lock their doors.

No one was hurt by the bullets raining down, but one person suffered minor injuries while trying to flee the area, police said.

Newport Beach Police quickly took the man, 42-year-old Marcos Sarinana Gurrola, into custody, but not before calling in the bomb squad when the man said he had more ammunition in the trunk of his car.

The incident came a day after a mass shooting at an elementary school in Connecticut, and last week’s fatal shooting at a mall in Oregon.

Patrick Wyrick was returning to his car when he heard the shots and, from behind the safety of his car, began capturing the scene with camera.

“I wasn't sure they were real or not. Then a heard another set of shots and then another,” he said in a video he posted on YouTube.

“My wife and daughter were at an ice cream shop in the mall when the shooting happened. They ended up running and screaming with everyone toward the opposite side of the mall.”

Other shoppers began tweeting:

Then I'm your worst nightmare. I'm a liberal with a gun who can shoot. Decriminalize pot, let Gays get married, there is global warming and it isn't that big of a deal to wait a while for a background check to buy a gun. Oh yeah, I did vote for Obama I do hunt and I think the NRA is a bunch of nut bags.

Seriously. If you don't think it's due to your gun laws that this continues to happen, there's no hope in hell for you. Give a junkie a rock and put the lighter 2 feet away from him. What do you think the results are going to be? Open your eyes and make the change! if not for you, for your children

No one has a 'need' to own an assualt rifle, cop-killer bullets or high capacity magazines to hunt or defend themselves. Shotguns, single-action rifles, pistols are more than adequate for these tasks. Only those possessed by some misguided paranoid 'Red Dawn' fantasies need those other kind of weapons.

"Cop killer bullets"? "assault rifles" ? Are you for real? The 1980's mass hysteria called back. It wants is useless, made-up, yellow-press phrases back! Geez!!

There is no such thing as a "cop killler bullet", and assault rifles (rifles capable of automatic fire) are heavily regulated and almost exclusively the property of the military. Go read something and learn. Your ignorance and parroting of terms that are meaningless is sad.

Actually, criminals often obtain various types of bullets banned under the Geneva convention and put them into guns that have been modified to operate as fully automatic weapons. And yes, you CAN buy such guns, you just have to go to the right State and gun show.

If it were not for the fact that, almost invariably, it is the innocents who end up as the victims of gun crime I’d be inclined to say let the gun rights crazy cowards shoot one another all day long… might actually cause some good. But sadly, they don’t kill one another, they just kill the innocent and defenseless, being the cowards that they really all are.

Only in America do people think that the only way to deal with gun violence is to get MORE guns into peoples hands. Absurd and pathetic. Everyone thinks they're Rambo, but in reality, shooting at a paper cutout is no match for a moving target shooting back. So what's next? mandatory teacher firearm training and certification like the police have to???

Only in America will the uninformed talk out of their rear ends. Google self defense and guns and see how the statistics actually stack up before saying something else. Educate yourself. It's embarrassing.

I did. studies on the effectiveness of guns being used as a deterrent to crime are mixed and inconclusive trending towards doing more harm than good. Moreover, guns are used by CRIMINALS to intimidate and coerce than protect and defend. The second amendment NEVER mentioned guns for self defense. That was made up. The purpose of the second commandment was to ensure an available pool of weapons and people should a civil war breaks out. Time for you to do your own research instead of parroting the nonsense the NRA spout off.

NY Veteran – "angry white males" losing their political power?" I'd like to point out 2 things

      1) The shooter is Marcos Sarinana from Southern California. I could be wrong, but that sounds like a Hispanic to me

      2) The VAST MAJORITY of gun crimes in this country are committed by "people of color". Blacks make up only 13% of the nation yet commit OVER HALF of all violent gun crimes in the United States. Hispanics are next, THEN whites and finally Asians.

The most violent cities in the United States are those with large black and Hispanic populations (i.e. Detroit, St Louis, Oakland, LA, NY, Miami, etc) In fact, if you simply removed blacks and Hispanics from the picture, white America would have a crime rate that was a lot closer to Canada, Sweden and other mostly white countries.

Since you seem so thrilled about "angry white males" becoming a minority – do you actually think America will be a LESS violent place when "angry black" and "angry Hispanic" males make up the majority?????

the votes dont portray true support against guns as ignorant dems like to think. myself and a lot of people i know voted dem because we opposed Romney's policies and the dems had stated nothing against guns. The dems avoided it because it cost them 8 years in office and lost them the gore election. had these events happened prior to the election i would have voted red. I oppose tax breaks to the rich, but i more heavily oppose anti-gun laws. anti-gun laws are what allow your "democracy" to easily become a dictatorship. when you have no way to defend yourself then everything will be taken from you. In addition, if you want to argue that criminals can't easily have guns if the public cant have them, look at mexico. you cannot own guns in that country and look at the cartels. The biggest reason people leave america alone is because we are so heavily armed. we would be better off fixing the taxes legalizing marijuana and fixing our education system and addressing socieity, which is the real isue, than by banning guns which would just start a civil war.

No one believes your threat of civil war. It is bogus and illogical. And even if the government wanted to take over the country by military force, what are you going to do about it? You would be helpless.

People are evil, where there is a will there is a way. until people accept that humans are the problem and not an object we will never fix the problem. remember columbine when they blamed video games, yeah that really fixed the problem you morons!

It's become very clear that many gun owners in this country are simply paranoid, cowards with amazing powers of premonition. I sure wish I could predict the future and foresee all the bad, scary things that are going to happen when, and if, we ever become a civil, peaceful society, and when and if we ever stop being held political hostage by arms manufacturers. Do some research.
