Man stands in mall parking lot, fires 50 shots in the air

A man stood in the parking lot of a shopping mall in Southern California on Saturday and fired 50 shots into the air.

Police didn’t say why, but his actions prompted many stores in the open-air Fashion Island mall in Newport Beach to lock their doors.

No one was hurt by the bullets raining down, but one person suffered minor injuries while trying to flee the area, police said.

Newport Beach Police quickly took the man, 42-year-old Marcos Sarinana Gurrola, into custody, but not before calling in the bomb squad when the man said he had more ammunition in the trunk of his car.

The incident came a day after a mass shooting at an elementary school in Connecticut, and last week’s fatal shooting at a mall in Oregon.

Patrick Wyrick was returning to his car when he heard the shots and, from behind the safety of his car, began capturing the scene with camera.

“I wasn't sure they were real or not. Then a heard another set of shots and then another,” he said in a video he posted on YouTube.

“My wife and daughter were at an ice cream shop in the mall when the shooting happened. They ended up running and screaming with everyone toward the opposite side of the mall.”

Other shoppers began tweeting:

  1. Mother nature

Bear babies when they born, if the baby is weak they leave it behind for the preditors, who after few hours is killed. Weaker dogs bite weaker dogs, because they smell the fear. Stronger dogs bite weaker person because dogs smell the fair. The only thing what distinguish a man from a dog, is the man still can reason, and he can decide what he is going to do with the fair. Is he going to fight it back, or is he going to run away from it. So don't allow to change what nature created, because if you are gonna be left only in fair, you gonna ending up as all these little bears.

      2) Let me guess – you signed your gun application with "X"

Why are the news outlets giving these guys five minutes of fame? It just gives other deranged people ammunition to go out and do something spectacular. If you don't give these people the fame of making the news....people would stop this non-sense. You can pass as many laws banning assualt weapons, it won't stop someone from using a hand gun from killing people.

Because, the hijacked federal govt. is censoring mainstream media for a ban on weapons build up....this is how they do it, print EVERY single story on someone firing a gun somewhere and it's big news. Expect Obumbles to use his presid. powers this week to put a ban on all automatic weapons... but, it ain't gonna work.

What's stupid is the idea that after an event like the shooting in newtown that we all need to stop and grieve before doing anything else, to respect the families and not 'politicize' anything. But crazy people aren't taking days off to grieve, todays story is evidence that action is needed now, not later.

You must know that what you are saying about the UN Treaty and weapons ban is completely and utterly false. And let me still believe the world is flat, that we never landed on the moon and that George Bush conspired to do 9/11 attacks

People keep arguing that guns and rights shouldn't be taken away from law abiding citizens that want to "protect" the community or themselves but when have you ever heard about a gun being used for good by a civilian?

The real reason only 2 people died in the Oregon mall shooting: A law abiding gun owner with a concealed carry permit drew his gun on the shooter prompting him to take his own life as the final shot. In 1997, an assistant principal in Mississippi, went to his car (off campus) and retrieved his .45 which put an end to a school shooting. Please educate yourself before mouthing off about things you know nothing about.

Many times. More often than you think. You don't always see these heroic acts on the news. Just recently here in Florida three robbers came in to rob a Subway. An older man had his pistol and used the pistol to chase the robbers away. Also here in the south a man with a concealed weapon permit was in a bank line when the man in front of him handed the teller a note to rob the bank. Needless to say the bank robber didn't succeed.

261 felons killed by private citizens during the commission of a crime, in 2009 alone. That's 261 good uses of a firearm. 261 innocent lives protected by a firearm. 261 murderous felons permanently removed from society by a firearm, resulting in countless additional innocent lives saved. I'd say thats plenty good, and that was only for one year.

It would seem that the only time 'good' happens because of someone carrying a gun is when another deranged person carrying a gun needs to be killed. This happens very infrequently... usually the deranged person runs low on ammo and kills themself.

261 felons stopped vs about 12,000 other people killed. I guess you don't mind a bit of collateral damage 🙂

See!! That is the problem right there!! Total disregard for anythng. Really?? No one got hurt so it's OK?? WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU?? Your Gun Culture in the US is one of the main reasons for your kind of thinking. Here in Canada we don't even really think about them. Do we have violence and crime- Sure! But the level of crime and gun violence as compared to your country is minimal. Where I live, I wouldn't even know where to buy a gun. Never mind a semi automatic whatever!! You people have to start to seriously change how you think and feel about guns. Perhaps you should spend more time thinking of the common good than thinking, "Oh it's all about me and MY rights". I have never met a people so set on themselves as a nation... "It's MY right, I have a right, I, I, I". Everything is me, me, me and what can I do for ME!! Stereotype? Maybe? But it has to change. NO ONE WAS HURT SO WHAT'S THE PROBLEM?? Shake your head!

If you can't shout "Fire!" in a crowded theatre, there sure should be consequences if you decide to shoot guns outside a shopping mall when the entire country is on edge about shootings at schools, shopping malls, and the like.

" if you decide to shoot guns outside a shopping mall when the entire country is on edge about shootings at schools, shopping malls, and the like."

      Really Tony?

Why should there be any MORE or LESS consequences just because people are on edge about shootings going on. Why not have(SEVERE and MANDATORY) consequences ANY time for this?
However, you are right...consequences must start being severe for this BS. The only thing I'm saying is, the consequences shouldn't be more prevalent just because it's rampant at the should be implemented ALWAYS. That wouldn't stop it from happening, but severe punishment(MANDATORY)would curb some of it. Vigilante justice would curb it even MORE considerably.

i think this guy went and did what he did to prove a point! what happened on friday can happen at anytime, anywhere, by anyone! we do have the rights to bear arms, but i think they should look into the banning of semi automatic weapons, unless ur getting chased by the taliban, in that case then u should have one.

So please tell me Al, or should I say Mr Brainwashed Hypocrite, how exactly is your 'gun' any less deadly than an 'assault rifle'? Used properly, they are basically equal, in the death department. That means it's the person, not the gun.
That means YOU are part of the problem, because you don't even realize what's going on. That's ok, you can live in your own misery, or fight with what you have, soon. Everyone else will be.
An trust me, I wish it didn't have to be that way....but truth dictates otherwise, unfortunately.
