Man stands in mall parking lot, fires 50 shots in the air

A man stood in the parking lot of a shopping mall in Southern California on Saturday and fired 50 shots into the air.

Police didn’t say why, but his actions prompted many stores in the open-air Fashion Island mall in Newport Beach to lock their doors.

No one was hurt by the bullets raining down, but one person suffered minor injuries while trying to flee the area, police said.

Newport Beach Police quickly took the man, 42-year-old Marcos Sarinana Gurrola, into custody, but not before calling in the bomb squad when the man said he had more ammunition in the trunk of his car.

The incident came a day after a mass shooting at an elementary school in Connecticut, and last week’s fatal shooting at a mall in Oregon.

Patrick Wyrick was returning to his car when he heard the shots and, from behind the safety of his car, began capturing the scene with camera.

“I wasn't sure they were real or not. Then a heard another set of shots and then another,” he said in a video he posted on YouTube.

“My wife and daughter were at an ice cream shop in the mall when the shooting happened. They ended up running and screaming with everyone toward the opposite side of the mall.”

Other shoppers began tweeting:

That's as f'ed up as prescribing an anti-depressant that causes depression to a manically depressed person. That's as f'ed up as giving someone a sleeping aid that will kill you in your sleep. That's as f'ed up as a liberal that thinks punishing the law abiding citizens by taking away a persons right to own whatever style of firearm they want is going to make a bit of difference to criminals...

I think the problem in USA is breakdown of social and family structure and values. Parents of these nut jobs are much to blame. In Switzerland, every many is required to own assault weapons. And you don't have these psychos there because their culture is more civilized. The social fabric in USA has been withering away since the 1960s.

Mental illness is usually genetic and develops regardless of family, religion, or values. Traditional values certainly didn't prevent an Amish man from shooting a school in 2006, and most of this year's famous public killers (theater-shooter, temple-killer, face-chewer) were devout christians who participated in charities. What I believe we're seeing is a particular brand of schizoid/autistic who becomes easily obsessed with other mass killings. With widespread media coverage and internet conspiracy theories, each of the murders has the potential to be contagious. In a study of mass killings in Australia, most of the slayers shared an unhealthy obsession with previous mass slayers and most of them displayed at least one mental deficiency.

I constantly see people on these message boards asking why the new is givining these people there 5 minutes of fame... What do you think the news is for?!? only reporting the good and nice stuff that happens? The news is here to talk about things that happen in society. This happened and they are reporting on it... I would agree that maybe they shouldnt broadcast the persons name as to not give them their so called 5 minutes of fame but thats it.

Don't worry folks, it was just celebratory gunfire. The guy was celebrating his move to new, free housing in jail for Christmas.

Can't really think of anything else to say about this.......

Gun control is just another smokescreen of the liberal establishment. The real problem is locating and identifying practically self raised individuals that are psychologically disturbed that will stop at nothing to take advantage of and force thier vengence on helpless individuals. If the government could do this, it would be problem solved. But they already have thier hands in your pants, and are knee deep in thier own fiscal conundrums.
It's more about very stressed out individuals, that, at the drop of a hat, explode in rage.

It seems that the majority of those individuals that you described are from very middle class families that subscribe to right-wing ideology.

USA and love with guns, people who support guns are in denial about reality in US. It's like a question who came first egg or chicken, or is it people kills or guns in this case. And it's funny on both side pointing each other but I believe it's both Gun and People kills so if we take out the gun in the equation, NO MORE MASS KILLINGS!

I guess we should ban HAMMERS now right?

After a guy in florida beat his neighbor to death with a hammer. Its a deadly weapon!

True, but its alot harder to cause a mass killing with a hammer and or a knife then it is a gun. I just dont understand peoples fasination with firearms to begin with. Unless you are a hunter, police or millitary why do you need a high powered wepon in the first place. The reason is to KILL!

This is exactly the denial mentality that perpetuates the gun problem in America. Nobody says that gun control will prevent people from killing one another, but the proof that gun control reduces the number of killings is there for all to see in the gun control policies of responsible governments in other progressive western democracies. Educate yourself.

We are talking about weapons that are capable of killing dozens and dozens of people. Comparing a hammer to a semi-automatic weapon is just idiotic. Please don't show your ignorance by stating stupid moronic comparisons.

Alistar, i have a high powered rifle, and i have never killed anyone or anything. How is that possible? If killing people is its only possible use, then why have i not done that? Because i am a mentally stable person who knows right from wrong and respects life and the law like most gun owners. Stop spreading fear with ignorant views of things you don't like.

Either the shooter was born south of the Mason-Dixon line or he spent a lot of time there. On weekends he hung around the gun & ammo. department at Walmart. He lived in a trailer park, drank Everclear and had intimate relations with his sister. He was a rabid nascar fan, a card carrying member of the Tea Party and he always voted republican. There you have it. His profile in a nutshell
