Man stands in mall parking lot, fires 50 shots in the air

A man stood in the parking lot of a shopping mall in Southern California on Saturday and fired 50 shots into the air.

Police didn’t say why, but his actions prompted many stores in the open-air Fashion Island mall in Newport Beach to lock their doors.

No one was hurt by the bullets raining down, but one person suffered minor injuries while trying to flee the area, police said.

Newport Beach Police quickly took the man, 42-year-old Marcos Sarinana Gurrola, into custody, but not before calling in the bomb squad when the man said he had more ammunition in the trunk of his car.

The incident came a day after a mass shooting at an elementary school in Connecticut, and last week’s fatal shooting at a mall in Oregon.

Patrick Wyrick was returning to his car when he heard the shots and, from behind the safety of his car, began capturing the scene with camera.

“I wasn't sure they were real or not. Then a heard another set of shots and then another,” he said in a video he posted on YouTube.

“My wife and daughter were at an ice cream shop in the mall when the shooting happened. They ended up running and screaming with everyone toward the opposite side of the mall.”

Other shoppers began tweeting:

We have truly become a society of IDIOTS. Since when did our reactions become 'oh my gosh, someone is shooting, let's start sending TWEETS? and Oh, while we're at it, let's also get our phones out so we can post a video on YOUTUBE! We have really reached a new low. For some reason, these would be the last things I would think about doing. How about, get your ass down and try not to get shot?? UNBELIEVABLE!!

For an obvious reason, cellphones and the permission of their usage while driving coupled with lots of other LAX laws toward humanity in this country have all resulted in this maniacal behavior in our midst!

Why not look at the root problems of these nutjobs? How about 6-8 hours a day EVERY day of violent video games and TV? How about the media making these people out to be anti-heros and Super-villains? Since they are never going to make it on their merits, they make it as evil. So perhaps the 1st amendment needs some looking at and not the 2nd? Perhaps we should look at the media as the true evil in this world and start holding editors, reporters and owners responsible and accountable for much of what their selective reporting causes.

Yeah, Anne, because if we don't know about these nut jobs they won't exist, right? And you might consider how it is this same media that gives you the more or less unfettered opportunity to look so ignorant in public as well.

This has nothing to do with video games, this has to do with a idiot who wants attention after the CT tragedy, he never intended to hurt anyone, he just wanted the attention by firing the bullets in the air and not at anyone. As far as the first amendment, sure lets take away more freedoms that we are losing day by day in the country.

The media is at fault as much as any aspect of our culture for these shootings. Guns don't point themselves at targets just as pencils don't misspell words. If our media outlets refused to cover these incidents with such detail they could save lives. Instead they encourage infamy and evil inspiration amongst the deranged. FOX, CNN, MSNBC and your local newspapers and news outlets are partly responsible for these deaths.

Amen! The shooter obviously de-humanized his victims. Our popular culture has become toxic.

keep the guns, ban freedom of expression. GREAT IDEA – keep people muffled and let it boil inside till they want to use their readily available weapons.
Man, clearly your parents were smoking too much of SOMETHING when you were in the womb.

Yup. I blame media. They make these guys out to be heroes. If there was no reporting or under-reporting these things wouldn't be happening as much. All these guys are a bunch of loser that can't get noticed by any other means, so the media provides plenty of fame when they do this. What do you think losers are going to keep doing? Gun control is not the answer. People control is. Start with more jobs, better economy so people aren't nutjobs with nothing left to do.

If a crazed maniac went to the main office of the NRA and blew away 20 people who worked there with a semi-automatic we'd see how fast the NRA would change its tune about banning semi-automatic weapons.

but they wouldnt be able to because all the NRA carry weapons so he might only get one or 2 before he would be taken down

True, they would reconsider their stance on gun ownership. The truth is that you can only defend yourself with a gun if you were not ambushed More guns will not stop the gun violence, gun control will. The law requires people to take a test before they are allowed to drive, why can't they test people before they are allowed to purchase a weapon.

When this country realizes that to let everyone carry and defend themselves against the killer in every city, then and then only will a true level of justice be achieved, Stop this foolish beleives that the Police can protect us as we have found out in everyone of these cases they only show up with the show of all this tax dollar equipment they are so eager to buy but after the fact is just to late. Arm American so Americans can take their country back from the criminals.

Paul – in the context of the number of guns and gun owners in this country, the number of murders committed by legal gun owners is statistically insignificant. Your post wreaks of the typical anti-gun crowd's sound-bite rhetoric – no facts, just a bunch of petty insults and misinformation.
