Man stands in mall parking lot, fires 50 shots in the air

A man stood in the parking lot of a shopping mall in Southern California on Saturday and fired 50 shots into the air.

Police didn’t say why, but his actions prompted many stores in the open-air Fashion Island mall in Newport Beach to lock their doors.

No one was hurt by the bullets raining down, but one person suffered minor injuries while trying to flee the area, police said.

Newport Beach Police quickly took the man, 42-year-old Marcos Sarinana Gurrola, into custody, but not before calling in the bomb squad when the man said he had more ammunition in the trunk of his car.

The incident came a day after a mass shooting at an elementary school in Connecticut, and last week’s fatal shooting at a mall in Oregon.

Patrick Wyrick was returning to his car when he heard the shots and, from behind the safety of his car, began capturing the scene with camera.

“I wasn't sure they were real or not. Then a heard another set of shots and then another,” he said in a video he posted on YouTube.

“My wife and daughter were at an ice cream shop in the mall when the shooting happened. They ended up running and screaming with everyone toward the opposite side of the mall.”

Other shoppers began tweeting:

Pot should have never been made illegal. There was never a real reason to make it illegal. Cigarettes kill thousands a year and they are still legal. Alcohol kills thousands a year and its still legal. In regards to the gun issue, research your facts. According to the FBI crime statistics database, violent crimes have been decreasing at a rate corresponding to the increase in firearms purchases since 2005. Also baseball bats turn out to be used at a much higher rate than guns in violent crimes. Yet I don't hear or see anyone wanting to ban baseball bats.

Take a look at the guns that are legal in America! What need to people have to buy automatic guns?? Something needs to be done, think it's time that Obama really looks into this issue and puts his foot down. Guns should not be allowed but automatic guns? The world right now is not a very good place. We need to all over the world believe in the man above and have faith and look to help and make the world a better place.

Marie, automatic firearms can only be purchased by Federally licensed firearms dealers in some states. The ordinary person buying a firearm - legally– can not buy automatic weapons.

Our nation has been suffering from moral decay for the longest. This is the result of the decay. I wish I could say things are going to get better, but just like the bible says man will only get worse, because we're sinful creatures. The world is a wicked place.

This shooting almost seems set up. How far will the left go to get guns outlawed? Yep, got my ol' tin foil hat on today. Give his family a nice tidy sum of cash while he serves out a sentence for assault with a deadly weapon and discharging a firearm in public.

Based on the comments so far, here's what I've learned about this story:
The weirdo who fired a bunch of shots into the air is either:
      A. An NRA member, presumably trigger happy and in the mood to just shoot bullets skyward

      or

      B. A bleeding heart liberal who wants to once and for all get the U.S. government to pass strict gun control laws.

Is it just me, or do we live in a black and white country?

America is already the most heavily armed nation in the world. If more guns made us safer we'd already be the safest nation, but in reality we have more gun violence than most of the world's other nations combined. The numbers are staggering, and yet people continue to make the same tired and delusional argument that we need even more armed citizens to reduce the level of violence. The second amendment may protect your right to bear arms, but it can't protect the rest of us from the fact that more guns equate to more shootings.

EXACTLLY. If more people were arrmed, then those that want to harm would think twice about doing so.

Which sign do you think will work best?
The one that read "ALL WEAPONS ARE PROHIBITED ON THESE PREMISES"

Or the one that reads "STAFF HEAVILY ARMED AND TRAINED. ANY ATTEMPT TO HARM OTHERS WILL BE MET WITH DEADLY FORCE"

      I choose the 2nd one.

      @ TonDef

No, more guns will not equal more shootings. It is the lack of guns that currently equal more shootings. Criminals know that very few people carry guns now, and those that do are banned fram carrying them into a lot of public places. So they carry and open fire knowing that there is little chance someoen will shoot back.

I know darn well if I was in a place and someone started shooting, I would pull my gun and take the guy out. Casualty rate would be low becasue the shooter would be dead.

The number of Americans that die by gun shot ranges from approx. 10,000 to 12,0000 per year. – So ... approximately 30 a day ... That is approximately a 9/11 every three months, every year, always ... we should invade ourselves!
