Connecticut governor backs stricter gun control

- First funerals for two of 20 children killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School are Monday
- Six adults and the shooter are also dead after shootings on Friday morning
- Police: Nancy Lanza, mother of gunman, died from multiple gunshot wounds
-
Gunman Adam Lanza had assault rifle magazines that held 30 bullets each, police said
- Victims' names released Saturday; all of the slain children were either 6 or 7 years old

[Update 5:45 p.m. ET] Connecticut Gov. Dannel P. Malloy signed an executive order Monday allowing Newtown to send its schoolchildren to Chalk Middle School in the town of Monroe so the children won't have to return to the scene of Friday's massacre of students and teachers.

[Update 4:01 p.m. ET] Connecticut Gov. Dannel Malloy supports stricter federal gun control, Malloy said during a press conference Monday in Hartford.

"Do I think Washington, D.C., needs to get its act together and enact stricter gun-control laws at the federal level? You bet I do," he told reporters.

Malloy, a Democrat, and Lt. Gov. Nancy Wyman attended the funeral Monday of Noah Pozner, one of the 20 children killed in Friday's shooting.

During the press conference, Malloy called for a statewide moment of silence at 9:30 a.m. on Friday, exactly one week after the deadly school shooting.

[Update 3:58 p.m. ET] Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell announced Monday a plan to review school safety in Virginia.

[Update 3:52 p.m. ET] The U.S. Postal Service has established an address where people can send letters of condolence to the people of Newtown, the service's Maureen Marion tells CNN. Here is the address:

Message of Condolence
PO Box 3700
Newtown, CT 06470

[Update 2:43 pm ET] According to a judgment filed in 2009, the parents of gunman Adam Lanza divorced because of  "irreconcilable difference,"  "as a result of which the marriage of the parties has broken down irretrievably."

Peter Lanza was ordered to pay Nancy Lanza alimony this year of $289,800. The order also required Peter Lanza to
pay the cost of both of the couple's two children's four-year college educations and graduate school programs, pay for Adam Lanza's car and maintain a $3 million life insurance policy naming his ex-wife as beneficiary.

[Update 1:58 pm ET] Investigators are searching smashed computer parts for clues that might shed light on the Connecticut school shooting, including e-mails gunman Adam Lanza might have sent and websites he might have visited, a law enforcement official said Monday. CNN's Carol Cratty reports that the official did not know how many computers were seized from the home where Lanza lived, but the official thinks there was more than one. A second law enforcement official said investigators had removed computers from the house, but would not comment on their condition.

[Update 1:49 pm ET] Sandy Hook Elementary gunman Adam Lanza took classes at Western Connecticut State University at age 16, school spokesman Paul Steinmetz told CNN's Josh Levs on Monday.

Lanza had a GPA of 3.26 with an A in a computer class, an A-minus in American history and a B in macroeconomics, Steinmetz said. He dropped German and computer science classes.

Lanza took his last class in the summer of 2009, Steinmetz said.

[Update 1:33 pm ET] Gun violence such as the Newtown, Connecticut, school shooting is a "complex problem," and "no single piece of legislation, no single action will fully address" it, White House spokesman Jay Carney says.

[Update 1:05 pm ET] Democratic Sen. Frank Lautenberg plans to reintroduce legislation in the next Congress that would prohibit the sale of high-capacity magazines, his office confirmed Monday.  The senator from New Jersey is another member of the upper chamber with plans to put forth legislation limiting gun rights. Sen. Dianne Feinstein announced Sunday she'll reintroduce an assault weapons ban when Congress reconvenes in January. Read the full story.

[Update 1:01 pm ET] Connecticut police say the investigation into the Sandy Hook Elementary shootings will take a substantial  amount of time. No more briefings are scheduled for Monday, they said.

[Update 12:56 pm ET] There was no connection between Sandy Hook Elementary School and the gunman who opened fire there last week, Connecticut State Police Lt. J. Paul Vance told reporters Monday, citing school authorities in Newtown, Connecticut.

[Update 9:56 am ET]  Investigators will examine every round fired during Friday's shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School, Connecticut State Police Lt. Paul Vance said Monday. Twenty-six people were killed in the school and most were shot multiple times, police have said.

[Update 9:45 am ET] Two adults who were wounded in Friday's school shooting in Connecticut survived, State Police Lt. J. Paul Vance told reporters Monday. The adults "suffered gunshot wounds and are recovering," he said.

[Update 9:42 a.m. ET] Officials will reopen schools other than Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Connecticut, on Tuesday, state police say. Sandy Hook may be closed for months.

[Update  9:36 a.m. ET] Sandy Hook Elementary School will remain closed indefinitely as the investigation continues, state police tell a news conference today.

[Update 6:34 a.m. ET] School shooting fears spread Sunday to Bristol, Connecticut, about 30 miles from Newtown, police are saying today. They said they arrested a juvenile on Sunday for allegedly making a threat against Bristol Central High School, but police Lt. Jack Michaud said no one was ever in any danger.

I think it would not hurt if we tought the teachers some self defense moves. And armed our administrators with some guns. At least that might give the kids some kind of chance. Just a thought

Cow boys like three things Guns, Horses and dead people, their idiotic comments are like " Guns don't kill people, sick people kill people". Any gun possessing idiot could lose his temper and try to be the judge and the jury.

They are not even cowboys. Gun toters are meek, and afraid of their own shadow, that is why they hide behind a gun and the second amendment. They are wanna be cowboys! All the guns in the world won't protect them from their fears.
He who lies by the Gun dies by the Gun. Sad but true.

Car don't kill people, Drivers kill people. SO, Why Do we have these crazy Traffic and Vehical rergulation in USA? Why Can't can't I drive a "Tuk Tuk " Imported from asia on US roads? no, I Thought so !!. Just like how we have Traffic and Vehical control and we should also have gun control. Remember, Humans are not perfect. Just like some of us are irresponsible drivers, there will be some irresposible gun owners who will abuse their 2nd amendment right. we will have to deal with them using gun control laws.

"Remember the police come only after a crime is committed and then it's too late. People should have the right to own guns to defend themselves. It goes against everything this country was founded on to believe otherwise. If you live in the outback and you got a pack of man eating lions running around you don't disarm yourself. You keep your gun loaded and handy so that you can protect your loved ones. The same logic applies here when comes to schools and our kids. The schools should appoint two or three people at each school to carry a concealed hand gun. That's the quickest way to protect our children from these sickos."j

The only part that matters in the computer is the hard drive, which is pretty sturdy. Even if it's damaged, the magnetic disks can still retain data that can be recovered.

Some hard drive platters are made of glass. So very fragile. There are other ways to track him though. Hopefully they will find his cohorts if he has any.

Correct. If he was enraged enough to smash the ancillary components he probably didn't take the time to destroy the hard drive. It's a terrible shame he wasn't so sloppy at the school.

As long as the platters aren't damaged. Even if he erased the drives, edge tracing has a chance of recovering the data.

my condonlences to all these little angels families who are in heaven with GOD along with the adults... They are all with the lord with no pain or sadness ! having said that, as a NYC Bronx resident , who dont think like politicians because i a not one, im a small nobocy from the Bronx NY , but unlike politicians , who are only book smart , yet they are street dumb and have no clue of how life is on the streets , i know that a legal firearm is a deterrent to violent crime and America was taken by the rifle and we as Americans have a constitutional right to bear arm , so what we should do is not make gun laws stricter , because even if they were so strict that the onlly way to get a firearm would be illegally, but rather allow americans to carry firearms legally registered, without the need for stricter gun laws, hey every crime of this nature is commited by a yound white male who never ever been arrested before , so you can change gun laws but these demented individuals will still be able to get their firearms, once again , they have never been arressted in their lives,, look it up and you see , so the answer is not tougher gun laws but rather we must allow more people to carry legally registered firearms because we can help eachother in the streets in public and we can help to save one anothers lives , a firearm is a deterrent to crime , make no mistake about it, would you come to mess with me if you knew i was armed ?? yeah ok ! American is the greatest country in the world so lets not change any of our constitution because than it would not longer be America ! We as parents must take the most important role in this and we know our children and if you see danger than as a parent we try to protect our child and this is one of the problems, if i knew my son is a lil unstable, i would have all those weapons locked up and away from his being able to take and use them !!!!!!!! Parents are all loving to our children and we must take stronger steps to be able to step in and call out for help if possible ... politicians will whimper and try to please and make more comfortable the people who scream for gun law changes , like NYC mayor Michael Bloomberg , another politician who is book smart but street dumb, and he has no concept of life in the streets , he screams for tougher gun laws and bashes the NRA , but he is wrong and he as a jew should know what the bible says, the bible says things like these will happen and worse things will happen towarrd the end days , we must be smart and realize that these politicians just want to scream for the spotlight to further their own polititical careers, hey mayor mike bloomberg changed the law after voters voted for the law , he went and changed it against their elections votes years later so that he could run for mayor for his third term, is this American ? it sure aint democratic to just ignore and change the law voted on by the NYC residents,, dont believe these politician, just like the war on drugs is a failure , so are these screams for tougher gun laws, wake up and realize that all of these young white males who have commited these mass killings have never in their lives been arrested so they will continue to get what ever they want because their back ground checks will pass with flying colors !!! wake up ,, the answer is truly to just leave gun laws the way they are and actuallly allow more americans to carry legally purchase and registered firearms, because not one of the killers in any of these mass killings of innocent people have been arrested in their lives before so please lets wake up and realize that screaming for tougher gun laws is not the answerr and you will see worse things happen since it is written in the bible, something maybe mayor mike bloomberg from my NYC, since im am 59 years old and been in NYC my entire 59 years of life, and in not so good neighborhoods where we in the streets all know that a firearm is a deterrent to violent crime. critisize my comment , its ok to do so as an american, but what i dont like are these british subjects talking trash about tougher gun laws, dammit , wake up , these young white kids who do these horrible crimes have never ever been arrested so they will keep guns in their hands forever if you make tougher gun laws bacuase they will be cleared with flying colors since they never been arrested,, we should allow anyone who wants to have a legally registerd firearm to do so , since like i said, we can help one another becuase worse things are going to occur,,, hey terrorists must be licking thieir chops , saying i hope they take away all of americans firearms, then we will invade and take america away from us,, yes , dont say it cant happen,, another, thing is lets remember hurrrican katrina when new orleans PD abandoned their post to go home and protect their own families since law and order had broken down,,, well these things may happen in the future in your state and or neighborhood and would you not feel safer knowing you had your legally registerd firearm to protect yourself and your family and any other good american that you can help who needed help,,, lets Wake up and realize the truth and understand that stricter gun laws are not the problem, again, all of these criminals had never been arrrested before so even with the strictest gun laws, they would fly through the appllication scrutiny and legally obtain their firearms regardless, so lets be smart and confront the truth, which its that more of these things will occur in the end times and we cant do anything about it ,, jjust like the great USA will one day fall and that day nobody knows when it will be , but it can be anytime, just like the bible says that nobody knows whent the lord will cone, but the lord will come like a thief in the middle of the night , when we dont expect him ! God Bless America ! we are the best country in the entire world but we are a divided people and we thing irrational in certains subjects but , tougher gun laws wont change these things from happening.... mike bloomberg should go and rent an apartment on longwood ave and 141 st near the old precint Ft. Apache and live there for a month and then he will be a little street smart cause he sure is street stupid and has no clue of life in the streets,,,, GUNS ARE A DETERRENT TO ALL VIOLENT CRIME MAKE NO MISTAKE ABOUT IT ! TOUHGHER GUN LAWS WIILL NOT STOP THESE CRIMES BECAUSE THE INDIVIDUALS WHO COMMITL THEM ARE YOUNG WHITE MALES WHO NEVER EVER BEEN ARRESTED BEFORE SO TOUGHER GUN LAWS WONT DON ANYTHING , WE SHOULD RATHER ALLOW MORE AMERICANS TO LEGALLY HAVE AND CARRY A REGISTERED FIREARM, THEREBY WE CAN HELP ONE ANOTHER IN VIOLENT TIMES... IT YOUR CHOICE, BUT DONT SCREAM OR CRY WHEN THE NEED ARISES THAT A GUN WOULD HAVE SAVED YOUR LIFE OR THAT OF A LOVE ONE , BUT RATHER UR MAIMED OR DEAD OR SEEN A LOVED ONE SHOT DEAD N YOU COULD NOT HELP.! END OF STORY !!!!!!!

Guns are not 'banned' in Canada. The only difference is you need to go and get a special license to have one whereas in the US you can just buy one in an Arizona parking lot and it's legal. They also pin magazines in Canada to restrict it to a certain amount of rounds, which is pointless because any motivated terrorist like these spree shooters can simply cut the pin or import their own high capacity magazines.

Breivik had to navigate Norway's very strict gun control and he still managed to get everything he wanted regardless of all the waiting, paperwork and background checks. These nutjobs are dedicated and plan this out months or years in advance

    • Canadian and I Live it!

I'm sorry you are very much mistaken. I am Canadian and a gun owner the difference being Canada has stronger gun laws and regulations. In the case if screening I had to have a federal and provincial background check prior to even being allowed to have a license. Second if I were ever to get charged with anything (even a fist fight) I would loose my guns and my license. As I have said the problem is not with the guns but the procedures in place to deside who is mentally capable and socially reaponsable to own one. I strongly urge the U.S. people to push you government for what laws we live by up here in our igloos.

Can't help but bother me that they called this Monster a Genius. He was not a genius he was a sick person that should have been put in a institution. Sorry but the laws changed and allowed parents to take care of these "special" kids that in my opinion are not special at all. These kids are disturbed..not special. Sorry but this is the parents fault. Every parent knows what kind of kid they created and they allowed him to walk around this earth unattended. The mom probably had guns to protect herself from him. That's my take.

So let me get this straight... We've become an imperailist nation that taxes its citizens almost 50% of their income, wants to remove the right to bear arms, impinges on other nations sovereignty AND we're best friends with Great Britain...

somebody tell the cops all they have to do is look up his isp DNS records and can see every site he logged into. forensic analysis of a 'smashed' drive if it's SSD is dead simple, can be done in minutes. if it was platter/discs then will prolly take a week or so to send it to a magnetic imaging forensic lab

Anyone else concerned with the amount of misinformation being delivered here.. Anyone else the lest bit interested in the numerous witnesses, already being surpressed, that state they saw authorities pulling another camoflauged individual from the woods outside the building??? Isn't it a coincidence that information is not being shared now? And what about the initial published police reports saying the murder weapons were 2 hand guns and the helicopter video of agents pulling the rifle from the trunk of the car???? Some unanswered questions still remain...

Thank YOU! I've been scouring posts all night and for the life of me can't figure out why nobody else is questioning this. It may be nothing BUT it sure smells fishy. There were reports of a second, possibly third shooter involved. Where is the good evidence of a motive that police claim they found in the house? Does this not cause people to wonder. The same scenario was described by witnesses about the Colorado shooting and experts doubted whether James Holmes was capable of wiring the bombs he had in his apt. Why are these questions being ignored by officials and not simply explained.

i dont understand why people are intent on pointing out that the killer used assault style weapons and that with out them it wouldn't have been so bad, well have you every seen what farmer johns 12 gauge shotgun will do? the style of weapon isn't the problem, removing weapons from every single Americans home is not the right thing to do, the back ground check needs to include people who are mentaly ill to prevent them from buying them, that is the only answer that will even start to help, so that everyday americans can still enjoy there right to keep and bear arms.

    For all you NRA supporters,
I do not fear living under tyranny any more than I fear little space aliens. But I do fear guns. I think Gun danger is much more realistic than Tyranny in the United States of America. Only a fool would hide behind the second amendment.
