Newspaper sparks outrage for publishing names, addresses of gun permit holders

An interactive map showing the names and addresses of all handgun permit holders in New York's Westchester and Rockland counties has infuriated many readers since it was posted Saturday on a newspaper's website.

The map, published by The Journal News, allows readers to zoom in on red dots that indicate which residents are licensed to own pistols or revolvers. It had prompted more than 1,700 comments as of Wednesday morning.

Blue dots indicate permit holders who "have purchased a firearm or updated the information on a permit in the past five years."

"So should we start wearing yellow Stars of David so the general public can be aware of who we are??" one commenter wrote.

"This is crazy!" wrote another.

Some of those responding threatened to cancel their subscriptions or boycott the publication.

"I hope you lose readers now," one wrote.

The map came about in the wake of the massacre in Newtown, Connecticut, according to a statement from The Journal News.

Hey CNN you are only 24 hours late with this article, but that might be because it shows how really stupid and overcontrolling these gun control whackos are. Someone should post the blueprints and contents of that reporters house so burglars visit him instead of the people that don't own guns.

Imagine the outrage if the New York Journal mapped every person who has had an Abortion ? Also, if you are criminal and either want to break into a home that you know does not have a gun or you just want to steal a gun now you can reference the handy gun map created by the New York Journal.

Why did they do this? You don't need a permit for long guns like assault rifles or shotguns. Only the handgun owner was singled out which will probably make their life a little more secure. For the non-owner, sadly, a little less secure. There is no rationale for publishing this list. I certainly hope the paper gets its just reward!

    Good morning folks.
We don't need this. What we need is sensible gun laws.

Gun laws do little to control the black market sale of guns @ saywhat. Good afternoon

Like to point out that one does indeed need a permit to buy a firearm in NY state, any firerm and has a strict policy enen upon view of a legal to own rifle while in public.
CNn does not want rational talk just touchy feely so IMHO: Permit holders have no gripe as their permits are of "Public Record."
They cannot claim any 2 nd Amend violation as they violated 2nd by asking for permission, a seperation of themselves from the commons.
This is yellow journalism at its best, and it is a valid political weapon.

    Yellow yet subtle:

      Haven't you heard?
AR-15's make for more effiecient hunting of Bambi.

Seriously, why would this paper do this?
All it will do is target these owners for burglaries.
      How dumb.

All this information is public domain. I don't see a problem with this.

Ahhhh, just in time for Christmas, this a gold mine for criminals ! If they want to steal a gun Ithey just have to stake out one of the homes with guns and wait until nobody is home. On the other hand if they want to break into a home that they know is not armed they can hit the ones that don't have a gun. In the military we call this "actionable intelligence" The New York Journal basically created a working database for criminals..... for free. I wonder if they are going to provide occasional updates? Way to go!!!

Now why would anyone shoot up a little kids movie film such as Bambi but yes it would be an effecient way to shoot it at anywheres from 20-600 yards away.
Never heard or seen a Bambi in woods and while my friends have said animals and I talk to each other that is usually just for nine months of the year.
The times when myself and others just run about trying to kill any birds, serpents and animals until we run out of ammo and or money and bloodlust we call hunting season.
We also kill and eat tame animals and birds just for the heck of it but mainly because most of us are unfit to wear a uniform and kill foreigners where they live, that and the fact that cannabalism is still illegal.

love this map, would like to see who is stockpiling as well as semi-automatic weapons in the neighborhood on the map. This information would allow me to make more informed decisions on my personal experiences with neighbors and should I allow my family to spend time in a house with guns or interact with people that carry concealed weapons outside of hunting. Since the Newtown Massacre ,and Huffington Post's continued coverage of the 100 plus murders and irresponsible shootings afterwards, I now ask are there guns in the house? and Are you carrying a gun? I would like to see a map like this in my community and state. Nice job Journal News.

Makes sense to me. If I move into a new neighborhood I would want to know if any other people in the area are pedophiles, handgun owners, or otherwise dangerous or unstable people.

I don't understand what the fuss is all about. This information is apparently available to anyone who knows how to search the internet (which murderers presumably already do). There is no legal violation in publishing this information. As for any ethical violations: all those who interpret the 2nd Amendment as a right of the common person to own any firearm should be the last to object to this map. It's easy to support ownership of mass killing machines anonymously. I support the paper's assertion that they would have published even more information if it had been available. If proponents of firearm ownership stand behind their beliefs, let them stand publicly, for everyone to see how many guns they have. Public domain information can indeed be used positively and negatively. Using the same logic that gun owners use ("guns don't kill people, people with guns kill people"), I would respond, "public information doesn't hurt people, people using public information illegally hurts people".

I say let them keep up the good work, I wish more media would have that kind of courage. I certainly do not want my grandchildren playing in any home that has any type of gun in it.

Bombo why is a gun owner automatically unstable and dangerous? Glad you arent judgemental or anything? I guess Prius owners are the smartest people in the world and Jeep owners are stupid? And only Liberals who go to Harvard are intelligent, Conservatives who go there have obviously been accepted by some fluke of some kind, they couldnt possibly been accepted by the means a liberal has

So, irresponsible press gives a map for criminals to know who has handguns in new York??? Brilliant...

Of course.. the people who own AR- 15 rifles... or other long guns are not included in this ridiculous map....

The map only shows registered handgun owners....

Great blueprint for criminals. Way to go..
