Obama says 'fiscal cliff' deal in sight

An agreement to avert the "fiscal cliff" of automatic tax increases and spending cuts appears to be "within sight," President Barack Obama said Monday.

The deal would prevent a tax increase for the overwhelming majority of Americans, extend the child tax and tuition credits for families as well as those for clean-energy companies and extend unemployment benefits for two million people, Obama said.

"There are still issues left to resolve, but we are hopeful Congress can get it done," Obama said.

Nevertheless, he did not sound hopeful a deal was imminent, saying he expected to remain at the White House for New Year's Eve while lawmakers used up every last second available to them.

    Uh huh.
Always the 11th hour garbage, when it could have been done MONTHS ago.
    Two words: term limits.

They can't get 1 important thing done? That theyve known as a looming problem for a year?! What's the point of electing these guys? This is govt at its worst. Boehner already pointing fingers, but his side is to blame. Manup and take some responsibility for once.

I have my doubts if there would be a House vote tonite. Likelihood is that we would go over the cliff.
We have proved as a people that we can be led whichever way those playing gods up on the mount want. So whatever comes our way is what we deserve.

  13. deal

there wouldn't be any problem – if they just extended the bush tax cuts as is- and cut spending on the side. But Obama had to raise taxes on his 'rich' scapegoats to please- the goats that voted for him- for political not economic reasons .That the whole reason, we have this problem.

  14. deal

The republicans should just pass a bill in the house extendng the bush tax cuts- let Obama and the democrats shoot it down in front of the public eye, and take responsibility for it. Why was Behner, trying to cut deals with Obama, instead of just doing this? Makes no sense. If they did this a month ago- the whole problem would have been solved by now. I question Behner's ability to lead – let Paul Ryan take over.
