New York governor signs nation's first gun bill since Newtown shooting

[Initial post, 5:09 p.m. ET] New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo has signed the nation's first new gun-control bill since last month's massacre at a Connecticut school.

“I am proud to be a New Yorker because New York is doing something, because we are fighting back (against gun violence),” Cuomo told reporters shortly before signing the bill.

The law, among other things, requires background checks for would-be purchasers on all private sales, fortifies the state's existing assault weapons ban, limits the number of bullets in magazines, and strengthen rules that keep the mentally ill from owning firearms. Read more about the bill here. Also, New York's move comes a day before U.S. President Barack Obama is to announce his own gun-control proposals for the country.

[Initial post, 4:27 p.m. ET] Lawmakers in New York have passed the country's first new gun-control bill since last month's massacre at a Connecticut school.

New York's Democratic-controlled Assembly approved a new set of gun regulations Tuesday intended to fortify the state's assault weapons ban.

The measure was approved by the GOP-controlled Senate on Monday and is expected to be signed into law by Gov. Andrew Cuomo soon.

So Chrissy. This is how you must run your household based on your comment on a different thread. You get a credit card, max it out. THEN you go get another credit card to pay off the first one? THEN you go out and get yet another credit card to pay off the first two. That's your approach to over spending. Wow what a moronic way to run a household. Good luck with that

Well we can see where this nation will crumble first. Hope you all enjoy being under the rule of a dictator. This is just the start. They'll continue to disarm the citizens until all of the guns are gone. Hope all of you people who oppose guns like being run by the Chinese.

Let them ban anything they want. For the protection of myself and my loved ones, I will be keeping all my weapons and accessories. Not to spite the law, to defend myself from it.

First of all BRAVO NY! Maybe, just maybe, by setting the example others will follow! YES, I do support the 2nd amendment, however, we, as a nation, have lost all common sense about the type of weapons we want to own! BUT, lets not get "tunnel vision"! There are many factors related to this problem and ALL of them need to be considered!
I support a ban on hi capacity magazines and assault type weapons, but those of you that are terrified they are going to take your guns away you need to get a grip! WILL NEVER HAPPEN! At least not in our lifetime!

Our government can't abolish our right to bears arms but they are doing it by other means. They lower the amount of ammo we can buy, lower how many rounds a magazine can have, remove the automatic mechanism. They forget one of the reasons why other countries think twice about overtaking our country is because it's citizens have arms. The movie Red Dawn may not be so far fetched. To our government, quit trying to go back to the old ways of England before the Revolutionary War and let us have our FREEDOM!! Use your heads to prevent tragedies in a more precise way instead on infringing on everyone else's rights. Direct it at the criminals and idiots who kill people. The hell with a Dictatorship and Communism!
