Brazil nightclub says it had right permits, offers condolence to victims of fire

The owners of Kiss nightclub in southern Brazil pledged to cooperate with the investigation into a fire that left more than 230 people dead early Sunday, according to a statement released by the law firm of Kummel & Kummel.

"We are open to all authorities and inspections," said the statement, obtained by GLOBO TV.

About 2,000 people were inside the club when the fire broke out - double the maximum capacity of 1,000, said Guido de Melo, a state fire official.

The full statement is here.

"All the fire systems were approved by the (fire department). They were adequate and necessary to provide for the safety of the nightclub and (its patrons)," the statement said.

Kinda like how firearms have safetys to stop them from killing kids.

Anyone who enters a packed nightclub is a glutton for punishment

The owners were greedy, allowed the nightclub to be packed to twice its capacity, instructed security to not allow anyone out until bills are paid not knowing there was a fire...

Yeah they are going to be out of business and probably in a brazlian prison getting poked in the bunta.

Even IF they had all their permits (which I doubt, actually), they still exceeded their occupant load by at least 1,000 ppl. Occupant loads are calculated by sq. footage open to the public use,, number of exits...you can get some bump up if it's a sprinklered bldg. It's the best way to reach the optimal safe occupancy. I'm surprised more people didn't lose their lives with that many people and if they did block/lock exits. Can't tell you the number of complaints we rec'd about locked/blocked exits and when meeting with responsible parties their excuse/justification was people skipping out on the bill. The International Fire Code allows exits to have delayed releases that have alarms for security to get to the door.

C'mon, it wasn't greed, it was more likely apathy. 'Hey we haven't had a fire here, we probably aren't going to tonight!" If anyone was to blame, it was the guys at the door, who either accidentally let in too many people, or took cash to let in too many people. Well, that, and the 'pyrotechnics' in a room with a bunch of people and just one door...

Brazil is going to be hosting the WORLD CUP 2014 and the next OLYMPIC GAMES 2016 !

theyre still getting theyre infrastructure ready for these games. Apparently theres still ALOT more to be done. The massive crowds expected for these events are going to be in danger if there isnt a major overhaul of the building codes and better inspection to ensure buildings are safe for the people visiting.

Great, pyrotechnics at the Olympics/World Cup and a stadium crammed with an over-capacity crowd. Remind me how this won't happen again?

A nightclub and a stadium are very different. Brazil will be ready for the cup and the Olympics and they will be wonderful events.

They may have had the proper permits and fire systems and all that, but what they lacked was any common sense. When you have 2,000 people in a building (which was double the capacity), and all exits but one are blocked off, and then on top of that, allow fireworks to be set off inside the building, and then something goes wrong, just what the hell do you think is going to happen ?!
For the fact that they, as usual, put greed over the concern of public safety, the owners and operators of that club need to be charged with murder in the deaths of all those people.

How can I know who is the girl in the picture number 18 (Black Hat), or contact her, she is exactly identical to my girlfriend, she is terrified of how similar they are .... I am sure there is a story behind or at least a proof that everybody has a twin somewhere in the world.
