Responding to the controversy about whether she sang live or lip-synced during her performance at the presidential inauguration earlier this month, Beyoncé Knowles said Thursday that she "decided to sing along with the prerecorded track."
"I did not feel comfortable taking a risk," she said.

Forget concerts and live appearances – just put on your fave artist and close your eyes – same thing
So what? She was singing the most difficult song to sing ever written. Anybody can potentially look terrible trying to sing that song live; I don't blame her a bit.
But look at all of the true "artists" who pull it off. Lame excuse.
She can sing it and it would have been great.
Well it is the National Anthem. And, you sing out of patriotism. Not for any American Idol audition. Doesn't matter how you sing it. What matters is that you sing it. It is all about maintaining the image. What would have happened if she couldn't sing it well live? There would have been some uhs and ohs but if you are truly patriotic then nothing should be higher than singing it. If you place public image above patriotism you should not sing the national anthem.
The melodic range of the song is only an octave and a half. Her reported vocal range is more than three octaves. SHAME!!
Well said.
Why bother having someone perform 'live' if they are going to play a recording? Just play the recording and save the adoration...
100% agree. Now close this thread.
It is ALL about the adoration.
Beyonce is a wonderful and talented artist. You lip-synced superbly. You are a genuine talent and the world knows and loves you. Be NOT moved by the criticism of the people, they are simply hating on you and your GOD given gift. Continue to do what you and all will be well. Be Blessed, you and family.
This just in.... DAG is black.
She should have used her God given talent.
She sucks, and so do you.
"lip synch superbly" is synomomous with saying "you cheated wonderfully"
Still, she sucks.
All the single laides told me she sucks.
All the single ladies.
To the DAG Haters, hate on...............She's filthy rich, beautiful and talented, oh and did I mention, RICH, and you are egotistically STUPID!!!!!!
All the single ladies, all trhe single ladies.
Hey she isn't so bad! I bet I can sing the same words over and over again!
"row row row your boat" – hope you don't mind, but someone "type-synched" that for me – I didn't have the courage to type it myself.
This just in JoeUser is an idiot.
She made the right decision. If she would've hit a wrong note or forgot the lyrics she would've been crucified by the press and public. I mean look the way you are complaining that she lip-sync to her OWN VOICE.
Then she should just send a tape and have it played and not waste our time having to look at her pretend. total bs
She would definitely have gotten some negative criticism if she screwed it up, but guess what? The next day, she would be that much richer and that much more arrogant. If we screw up at our jobs, we get negative recognition in the form of a pink slip..
What the hell kind of "risk" is singing a national anthem by a recording artist.. total bs
Sistah gets a pass from Aretha and all the other brothas and sistahs. Beyonce Vanilli.
Seriously, who cares.
I can't figure out what all the fuss is about. If I am not mistaken, Whitney Houston lip-synced the Star Spangled Banner at the 1991 Superbowl. No one made a big deal about that and no different at most concerts these days. Really people, get a life!
Also: every single singer you've ever seen on a float in a holiday parade on TV?
LIP SYNCHING. 100% of the time. All of 'em. They even start screwing up after a while, because their faces are feezing off.
Well, I do sort of care. I can lip sync – that doesn't make people want to see me. If they're going to play a recording then don't have a performer on stage, stay at home. You're not a singer if you lip-sync. And risk ? You're a top-notch highly paid professional, so you better prepare best you can and show up and do your best. If the cold messes with your voice fine, at least we know the performance was REAL, not a fake that some 12 year old could do !!!
Before the "lip-sync-gate" we had to hear all the rave about the most memorable rendition of the anthem and Beyonce this and that, and we had to put up with it. Now that it's clear she didn't performed live, the same people that put so much focus on her performance are saying that it's really not newsworthy. It never was: her supposed great performance or the fact that it was a CD.
And, for those saying that at the end it was her voice, it's different to record on studio than to perform live. Ask Britney!
Why does John Boehner look like that?
How I long for the days when low-brow pop culture had not sunk so low as it now dominates our declining civilization. Anyone remember when Robert Merrill and such used to come out and sing the national anthem? How about a trained professional musician to sing the national anthem instead of some silly crooning, wailing pop-star? All this pop-singing is NOT singing and it's only music with a very loose definition. Oh, I forgot. We live in the age of NO STANDARDS. Anything goes, Mr. Porter! You got that right!
I just hope my tax dollars didn't go to paying for her performance, or for her rehearsals.
"She did not want to take a risk by messing up and tarnishing her image." That is called mediocrity. If you are so talented and so amazing then you can get up there and nail it live. (Like Brian McKnight did before the Pro Bowl). If not, get back in the studio and let someone else on stage.
