Snowmobiler Caleb Moore has died, his family said in a statement Thursday.
Moore, 25, was competing in the snowmobile freestyle final of the Winter X Games last Thursday in Aspen, Colorado, when he came up short while trying to do a back flip.
The front skis of the machine clipped the landing hill and Moore shot forward over the handlebars. The 450-pound snowmobile struck him as he slid down the hill and the machine tumbled over him.
"He will be truly missed and never forgotten," his family said in a statement.
FULL STORY
Until these pointless games are stopped, unfortunate tragedies like this one will continue...
You're a MORON ^^
We need to make laws restricting the backflip capabilities of snowmobiles or there will be many more unfortunate tragedies like this one. Do we need to wait for a child to die in a snowmobile backflip accident? Think about it.
Why don't we ban football while we're at it. And Hockey, and swimming, and basketball, and wrestling. Heck, we shouldn't let people watch anything live either, because people have been killed in the stands. You know, why don't we all just lock ourselves in padded cells for the rest of our lives? Need to take away books too, because paper cuts could cause gangrene.
This guy died doing something that he loved, he knew the risks and accepted the possible consequences. Anything can be dangerous, but it's stupid to start banning stuff just because someone could get hurt.
This isn't like guns. The only person who can be killed or injured by a person choosing to compete in the X-Games is the person who chose to compete in the X-Games.
The reason these sports are popular is because they are high risk. They know the risk going into this. People like you are destroying this world.
Pointless games? were not talking about basketball here this is an intense sport that these athletes work their ass off for not just running back and forth throwing a ball into a circle!!! R.I.P Caleb Moore. You'll never be forgotten you were an amazing rider and youve inspired many riders with your sick stunts.
They are not pointless. They give opportunities for athletes outside the big three. They also generate a lot of economic activity for all who participate. I'm sure the pizza shops near the venues don't mind the business.
A girl who won gold in the X Games can be seen free climbing a rock spire in a Citi Reward ad. Her name is Katie Brown. She has turned her gold into international fame in her discipline.
Pastrana has gone from the X Games to Rally and then NASCAR.
Athletes who engage in football, cycling, and Ballet know those activities carry the risk of life altering injury. They get an emotional payback from those activities, and that payback makes it worth the risk.
Darwin award winner
Considering your name is "Stupid," you probably ARE a Darwin Award winner. You've got my vote!
wow... they should probably just outlaw snowmobiles now
Not a bad idea(Ban snowmobiles)
Rest in Peace. I am sure Caleb does not want to see the x games cancelled. Nobody reaches that level without knowing the risks involved. This country is so stupid. Everytime something bad happens we need to ban it forever!! I guess we shouldn't drive cars, swim, bike, ski, or do anything other then bubble wrap ourselves to a lazy boy.
well he died for something he loved...and that was this sport. Nothing in life its pointless, everything is just unforeseen, hell you might walk out of your front porch slip hit your head and your dead. Life is an adventure! no regrets! live it! or die whining!
Well said ahmed!
"well he died for something he loved"
Let's not gloss over the fact that he died. At 25.
"Nothing in life its pointless, everything is just unforeseen, hell you might walk out of your front porch slip hit your head and your dead"
Walking out of your front porch every morning is a lot more productive and far less dangerous than flipping a skimobile in the air. Comparing the two is ridiculous.
I don't want to ban games because everyone is free to make their choices. But I do hope that people move on from these stupid, dangerous and pointless "sports."

You can view these sports as 'stupid' or 'pointless' and of course you're free to do so, or to not participate. I am glad that you are specifically not calling for banning them. I disagree with your assessment of the sport but I applaud your realization that it is for others to decide if they want to take part.
X games, Dew Tour, etc. have dramatically increased the severity and volume of injuries to "regular" kids playing at home
because they want to do what they see on TV.
Sounds like bad parenting to me....
RIP! Died doing what he loved.
Deepest sympathy to his family.
Sad for his family and friends. But please stop with the "died doing something he loved." That cliche is no consolation to those who lost a good friend or family. Guaranteed if asked, he would probably say he loved this sport but didn't want to die doing it. Most of us love to live but that doesn't mean we died doing something we love when we expire.
Well said.
"This isn't like guns. The only person who can be killed or injured by a person choosing to compete in the X-Games is the person who chose to compete in the X-Games."
Tell that to the spectator who was injured by a runaway snowmobile at the same event this year.
The spectators know the dangers too, same goes for auto racing, baseball, and hockey fans. A errant hockey puck can kill you too. At least you can see and hear a snowmobile as it comes at you.
I keep reading all over news and post how this was his dream. He loved doing it. It was his choice to live his life doing this and blah blah blah. If that's truly the belief of those in these x -treme sports then why would ESPN have to issue any kind of statement in regards to looking into this tragedy, if changes need to be made they will be. What a joke. The only thing ESPN and snowmobile manufacturer looking into is if they are in anyway liable for this tragedy. He was only doing what he loved. Unfortuanetly Caleb will never be able to tell anyone he loved what he did in life ever again.
The only thing that troubles me is the medics let Caleb walk away knowing a 450lb snowmobile landed on him. Why did they not place him on a stretcher and brace his neck and limit head movement?
On a more positive side in the past I've been fortunate to travel to Aspen 5 times for the X games and these kids are great. I think next year they should place Caleb's snowmobile atop Buttermilk Mountain or the snowmobile hill with a beacon of light beaming from it to the sky above for the duration of the games!
That is a VERY GOOD question. Even if he had insisted, they should NOT have let Caleb get up and walk around. ANY layman knows this, why don´t they? That is probably what ultimately killed him – malpractice.
I agree with many that the medics should have not let him stand up.
My sympathies to his family and friends. All sports are dangerous, I used to train horses. Now I stay away due to a slight back injury, I don't want to make it worse. However it won't keep me from horses all together. :0)
