Iran's newest warplane something from 'GI Joe?'

First it was monkeys in space (or not) and now it’s “GI Joe” fighter jets. Not the best of times for Iran’s aviation and aerospace programs, at least if you listen to the skeptics.

First there were doubts about Tehran’s claim it sent a monkey into space in late January.  After photos of two different monkeys that were aboard the alleged one-monkey space shot surfaced, Iran media said there was a photo mix-up and, yes, there was just one Iranian monkey in space.

Then this week Iran unveiled what it said was its new high-tech stealth fighter plane. The jet shown in pictures on the website of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has been the butt of jokes all week from aviation bloggers.

“This aircraft looks a lot like an old GI Joe toy,” wrote one blogger.

And from another, “This has to be a joke, right?”

Come. ON. Too lazy to simply call up a university aerospace department or a practicing professional? Why would I want to read blog posts? This is why your ratings are going down the tubes. Tsk Tsk CNN.

Yeah, it's a stealth aircraft all right. You'll never see it in the air.

I could have built a better-looking plane with my friends and two weeks in my garage. Iran has zero international respect because of stupid stuff like this. Reminds me of when NK used footage from Top Gun as a "training exercise demonstration"

Look how small the nose is! How can they fit a radar in that thing? This is embarrassing because it is so obviously a fake. My guess it is to impress the ignorants in their own country rather than the west.

Uses a rubber band. Iran and North Korea, the two remaining axis of evil are competing for the HBO Comedy award. Hey, I saw the NK leader in 2 BROKE GIRLS. He owns a diner now! BJNJ

That thing must be great around the parking lot, because that gear will never retract. There is no retract support strut (the angled strut that gets pulled up by the hydraulics)...it's probably just a straight pipe bolted on the bottom of the fusa-lagee.

Good comment on the glass being so scratched up as well...nice prototype guys!

Couple of drunk Iranians assembled it in 2 days. Engines, who needs stinking engines, we'll push it over a cliff.

They are preparing their people for war. The Iranian public are pretty well educated and would not allow the religious zealots take them to war unless there is a general feeling they are prepared for it. so Show how technologically advanced they are for a few year. detonate your own atomic bomb and all of a sudden they public will believe they can take on the world. They shot down one of the US drones right? If you can make god bleed ....

Hey, I saw this plane for sale at Brook stone. Looks like Iran gets the looking foolish award. They Photoshop-ed a missile, got their monkeys confused and manufacturer a Christmas toy in February. Amaditijerk does have a good hair stylist

The only reason it's so small is that they ran out of balsa wood and fiberglass.

"Images released so far show it as a plastic-made aircraft."
I beg to differ.. it is made of good quality Iranian plexiglass, manufactured proudly by revolutionary factory workers. Where can I order a couple of those?
