Iran's newest warplane something from 'GI Joe?'

First it was monkeys in space (or not) and now it’s “GI Joe” fighter jets. Not the best of times for Iran’s aviation and aerospace programs, at least if you listen to the skeptics.

First there were doubts about Tehran’s claim it sent a monkey into space in late January.  After photos of two different monkeys that were aboard the alleged one-monkey space shot surfaced, Iran media said there was a photo mix-up and, yes, there was just one Iranian monkey in space.

Then this week Iran unveiled what it said was its new high-tech stealth fighter plane. The jet shown in pictures on the website of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has been the butt of jokes all week from aviation bloggers.

“This aircraft looks a lot like an old GI Joe toy,” wrote one blogger.

And from another, “This has to be a joke, right?”

I'm not sure how these things can be compare to GI Joe toys, the toys would fly farther if you threw it with your bare hands than these things would if you strapped rockets to them. Besides, even if these things could fly, where would the weapons go? Looks like at best all their only purpose is to entertain the pilots of other countries who might be looking to shoot them out of the sky.

How many of us know that the first flight by a human being, the first manned Rocket flight and the first recorded Parachute jump were accomplished by Muslims?

265 years before the Wright Brothers flew, a Turkic Muslim by the name Hezarfen Ahmat Celebi made a successful flight of almost 1.5 Km and became the first ever human being to fly on his own.

This amazing and important piece of information has been totally blacked out in history. Last year (2004) was celebrated as the centenary year of man's flight, but not a single word was spoken about this foremost aviation achievement, let alone the false claim of the Wright brothers' flight being the man's first ever flight

That's because there isn't any proof for that particular fairy tale.

Thats it? Thats the only highlight of a muslim's acheivement in the countless inventions and discoveries of the modern world? And even if it is.. why does it matter if the guy was a "muslim"? you dont see the headlines saying a "christian" invented the latest smartphone? thats probably why you guys will always remain backward in your thinking and progress.. MY religion...YOUR religiion.. PATHETIC!

We should count our lucky stars that the All Powerful Muslim space army has allowed us to live so long.

The Wright Brothers are credited with the first powered airplane flight. Gliders and balloons were flown for many years before the Wright brothers.; being "powered" in an important distinction. Their achievement does not diminish the accomplishments of earlier pioneers but nor should we discredit the Wright's accomplishment.

Look – let's get one thing correct here – the Wright Brothers were not the first to fly – most of us know that. They were the first to acheive POWERED flight – an aircraft that could take off from the ground with an engine, not a glider (which were quite common before the Wright Brothers) or a balloon.

And, leaving the Muslim aspect out of this – this may be just another attempt for Iran to appear bigger than it is. The aircraft looks like a mock-up – other than the downsweep wing tips – which make NO SENSE frankly, only having been used on the XB-70 – it looks like a bunch of designs from other countries that were thrown together. And if they are trying to do Fly-by-wire – good luck.

Maybe this whole aircraft presentation by Iranian officials is just an Iranian sitcom or their take on a new reality show. What's it made of...wax. It's a candle (look for the wick) it's used by the mystics to lead the theocracy somewhere, but who knows where. If we're having fun with this Iranian plane thing it's only because they invite the ridicule.

they got one thing hidden very well. I don't even see the rubber band to wind it up with. Very stealthy.

I bet the thing doesn't even fly. Its obvious for internal consumption. Iranian mullah wet dreams. The USA has aircraft that can dance around this cardboard kite. Besides, nothing the Iranians say is the truth.

The most important picture is missing. The picture that shows it flying. I'm guessing it doesn't do that.

No, there has to be an extra seat in it so an Imam can fly along with the pilot. Most Muslims in Iran are Shia and the Shia think the Imam has been chosen by Allah to lead them to be true Muslims. There has to be an Imam to clarify to the pilot how flying and combat are supposed to be done according to the Koran. It's a sort of a spiritual micro-management.

Geez. Since the alphabet, nothing but the suicide vest and mock up airplanes. This area of the world isn't exactly a well spring of ideas, is it?

I love the exposed wires at the back of the CRT display. I'd really like to see what the engine(s) look like.

If they could keep that canopy bubble from sticking out so much, they would have a decent design. Also the avionics looks like they went on ebay, couldn't find what they wanted and settled on Fish Finders.

Ahmadinejad – "It is too round at the top it needs to be pointy, it needs to be scary round is not scary pointy is scary."
Scientist – "Supreme Leader the shape of the missile has nothing to do with aerodynamics it has to do with the payload delivery"
Ahmadinejad – " i have done my research and it has to stick to the ground and go boom"
Scientist – "Supreme leader i'm pretty sure you are getting this from cartoon"
Ahmadinejad -"Nonsense it was a research film"
Scientist – "In this film, just one question, was there a duck that when there was an explosion his beak went to the other side of his head and then in order to talk he has to pull it back around."
Ahmadinejad – "There was someone who had such a deformity, yes"
Scientist – "Now i am certain you are watching cartoons"
