Iran's newest warplane something from 'GI Joe?'

First it was monkeys in space (or not) and now it’s “GI Joe” fighter jets. Not the best of times for Iran’s aviation and aerospace programs, at least if you listen to the skeptics.

First there were doubts about Tehran’s claim it sent a monkey into space in late January.  After photos of two different monkeys that were aboard the alleged one-monkey space shot surfaced, Iran media said there was a photo mix-up and, yes, there was just one Iranian monkey in space.

Then this week Iran unveiled what it said was its new high-tech stealth fighter plane. The jet shown in pictures on the website of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has been the butt of jokes all week from aviation bloggers.

“This aircraft looks a lot like an old GI Joe toy,” wrote one blogger.

And from another, “This has to be a joke, right?”

These articles are kind of discriminatory. Come on guys, they clearly stated that the aircraft on display was a mockup and when ever a country unveils a new jet project, they start by unveiling mockups. This article is just for leech worms who enjoy trolling and making Iranians look dumb and pathetic.

Not that we need any reason to make fun of them...because the Iranian government is SO intelligent. Yeah right.

Did they say it was a mockup? If so, then clearly there are a lot of misinformed people making comments about this aircraft.. but I don't know the backstory on this. All I know, looking at the pictures, this is clearly not a working aircraft.

Iran is getting as sketchy as North Korea. They must really have to work themselves into some sort of trance to actually believe some of the garbage they shovel!

You people are acting like middle school children making fun of the small guy. You set up a country and see how hard it is to regulate economics, balance the national budget, engineer a working government, care for your people and build jet fighters that can compare with the richest countries in the world.

This is a complete fake. I have worked in making props and using fiberglass in the past, and I know a prop when I see one.

I have met Iranians in Seattle and they are perfectly okay but the Iranan president is a dangerous head case.

I knew two Iranian brothers in college, they insisted they were Persian, great people, hated what was happening in their country and this was in the last century. All of the Iranians I have met over my 62 years have been down to earth and fantastic folks. The leader of Iran and the political structure these days. Not so much. I really hope it isn't a mock up, a good way to way reduce the number of pilots in their Air Force.

It looks like a scale plastic and fiberglass display airplane. Maybe the pilot puts a quarter in a slot and it rocks back and forth.

Clearly it looks like something from a model airplane box put together with testors glue. That pilot is so high up in his seat because he's sitting on a crate. I don't see any armament besides the felafal toothpick eater at the nose. Besides, the windowscreen on and old ford looks more impressive. Nothing a boomerang or a Gau couldnt take out. If they really want to show us, fire up the turbine and lets hear the whine of morning prayer before coming out the afterburners. lol.
They would be better off buying a Ferrari engine and installing a speaker noise from a real raptor.

Could you be any more racist? Who cares what it looks like? Worry about paying your bills and putting food on the table, Dorothy. Sheesh.

      Hey dorthy...

racist much...? If you are gonna make a habit of tossing out, ignorant cultural references, you might want to learn how to spell them first.. it's 'falafel'.. and it's hardly unique to Iran..

@Joel....Mahmoud? IS THAT YOU? While I am aware english is not your first language, Mr. President, I must convey that you have some serious misapprehensions about the meaning of the word "racist." She's talking about the nose needle! And as your booster, Matt correctly said, falafel's consumption is broad, in fact it's close to global. Had she said "cheese" would she be being "racist" about the Swiss?

Did I miss it?? Where is the intake for the engine? Why are picking on this poor wannabe plane?

Even GI Joe toys have intakes. Maybe they figured without an engine installed they wouldn't need intakes?

On real jet aircraft the intakes are under those red inlet covers. ( just behind and below the canopy. )

It is interesting that all of the decals are in English. I wonder if any aeronautical engineers out there think this can fly?

I wondered about the English all over as well.....that makes no sense to me, if they "built" their own play.

This plan may not rival the F22 raptor but don't say it's made of plastic. That only shows one thing, You are scared, and this is not a good thing to show to your friends or your enemies. Overall I think the west is really underestimating Iran's scientific progress.

Scared? Of a cheap plastic model? LOL!!!!! Come on Mohammad go and look at some pictures of REAL fighter aircraft from the US, Russia, Europe or China and compare the scale of the parts to each other. This really is a poor attempt at propaganda by the government of Iran. I really feel for the people of Iran because I have met many Iranians and they are great people. But they live under the gun and have to take what ever garbage there government is dishing out. I promise you will never this thing in the air unless Ahmadinejad and his boys pick it up and throw it!

look at the Iranian Presidential site you idiot! Look at the pics! Look at the body lines... Do you see all the inconsistencies, tha'ts not stealth, that paper and plaster!!!!! Before you go calling someone scared of something, why don't you make sure it's real first!!! Seen a test flight, an engine fire up, or anything remotely evident of an authentic fighter plane. It can out fly anything but a bird, wind, my car!!!!!
